FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL : TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND , 2014
LAVAL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS New Address: 2323 Daniel-Johnson
Dear Parent/Gardian:
STL WELCOMES YOU ABOARD…
STL is pleased to include among its customers the students of Laval Junior High School. It is our
pleasure to put at your disposal fifteen (15) special routes as well as 40 regular routes. To be able to use the STL buses, your child will need to get an OPUS card submitted by STL.
For secondary 1 students:
A letter from Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier School Board was mailed to your home in June 2014. To get the OPUS card, the STL representatives will be present at the “Orientation Day” on August 25th. Your child will
have to bring the form “Application for OPUS photo card” completed and signed by a parent and an amount of $14.00 (cash, debit card, credit card) which covers the cost of the OPUS card for two years.
For secondary 2 students:
If your child already has an OPUS card and the expiry date shows as “31 octobre 2014”, the card must be replaced. The cost will be $14 and your child will need to bring the duly completed form, signed by a
parent and the money. The STL representatives will be present at the school on August 25 and will issue a new card. If the expiry date shows as “31 octobre 2015” the card is still valid without any
fees until next school year.
The STL monthly bus fare privilege has to be loaded on the OPUS card every month at your local convenience store providing this service or at the metro stations, starting in September 2014.
You can get all the information concerning the OPUS card and the special bus routes on the
STL web site at www.stl.laval.qc.ca and by clicking on the “Students’ Zone” in the right side
of the web page.
Please be advised that a description of the special routes providing services directly to and from school will be available on our web site (www.stl.laval.qc.ca) beginning the second week of August 2014. Students will be picked up and dropped off at main intersections and at the regular STL bus stops. For more information on these routes or if you have any questions or a complaint, you should call STL General Information Department at 450-688-6520.
We are looking forward to provide transportation services for your children and hope that everything will
be to your satisfaction.
Sincerely,
Marie-Céline Bourgault, Directrice des communications/marketing
ELIGIBILITYThe OPUS photo card is required to enable users to benefit from reduced fares for transit passes and tickets which are granted to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria set out by the transit organizations, in accordance with their respective regulations. OBTAININGTo obtain an OPUS photo card, users must first fill the form, then go to an issuing office with an identification document (health insurance card, driver’s licence, birth certificate or passport). The privilege fee must be paid at the time the card is issued. Supporting documents may be required, depending on age or school attendance.
DURATION OF CARD’S VALIDITY (based on age on October 31 of the current school year)

Rules and Safety Tips for Students Using
Public Transportation in the City of Laval
Personal safety on public transportation in the City of Laval is quite similar to school bus transportation. Many of the bus stops are common or similar. Students are required to walk the same distances to bus stops as prescribed in the Transportation Policy of the School Board. The benefit of using public transportation is the flexibility it provides to accommodate varied schedules. Students can now vary their departure time to go to school. As well, students wishing to stay after school for different activities may do so without great inconvenience. Every parent has the responsibility of ensuring that their children comply with the bus safety rules as outlined in the Transportation Policy. These rules apply to all students regardless of the mode of transportation. The rules outlined below provide a basis on which students should conduct themselves when traveling on public transportation: 1. When riding a bus, the driver is in charge…Always listen to the driver’s instructions. 2. Always be at the bus stop at least 10 minutes ahead of the scheduled time. 3. Do not stand or play on the street while waiting for the bus. 4. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop; then board the bus in single file and in an orderly fashion. 5. Students that stand on a public bus should hold on to special hand grips provided for that purpose. 6. Students should talk quietly. Do not eat, drink or smoke on the bus. 7. Never put head or arms or other objects out of the window. 8. Do not throw anything inside the bus or out of the windows. 9. Know and remember where the emergency exits are located and how they are opened. 10. To get off, wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before moving. No student should stand in front of the yellow line on the floor at the front of the bus…descend in a single file. 11. Students should never cross in front of the bus. Walk a safe distance away from the bus, so the driver can
see you and know you are safe. Cars are not required to stop to allow students to cross in front of public transportation buses.
PARENTS SHOULD REVIEW THE FOLLOWING TIPS WITH THEIR CHILDREN BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR : 1. Discuss and map out the safest route to and from the bus stop.
2. Establish safe walking habits such as using crosswalks correctly, adhering to traffic signals and looking left, right, left again and over the shoulder for turning cars before crossing a street.
3. Allow enough time to cross safely and use walk push buttons at signals where they are available.
4. Point out possible traffic hazards.
5. Provide an alternate plan for children in the event they miss the bus.
6. General behavior on public transportation should be respectful of other passengers who are sharing the service. 7. Personal listening devices are discouraged at all times. (IPod, etc.)
8. If a student misses the bus he should return home. If parents wish that their child use alternative public
transportation the bus pass is valid for that purpose. However, please ensure that your child is well
informed of the route to travel.
9. It is important to review the STL Guide on Use of Transportation.
10. If there are any concerns or comments you can contact the Transportation Services of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board at 450-621-5600, extension 1420.
