OMG!!THERE IS SO MUCH HAPPENING

AT FCCOG THIS OCTOBER!

We start out with a Saturday Oct. 5 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Blessing of the Animals and hope you will all come with your favorite fur, reptile or fishy friends (even stuffed ones) so we can say a simple prayer to bless them for you. Animals are such important friends to us and we want to make this a special occasion.

That same evening on Oct. 5 from 6:00-9:00 pm, you are invited to meet up with Brad and Susie Craig as they are celebrated at the trendy “Brewport” off I-95 in Bridgeport. This is a very cool place to check out and be with church friends away from the usual stomping grounds.

World Communion Sunday on Oct. 6 promises to be new and different as we break bread and cup in our beautiful revamped Meetinghouse at 10:00 am. We hope to have six stations for Communion representing six different cultures, prayer, song and fellowship.

We are hosting an official Re-dedication of the Sanctuary on Sunday Oct. 20 at 10:00 am. It is sure to be a memorable service with a guest conductor, so please come and celebrate this auspicious occasion together. It’s been a long road to freshen things up and it looks beautiful.

Trunk or Treat is back on Saturday Oct. 26 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Bigger and better, there will be

From our Interim Senior Pastorfriends, food trucks, decked out cars, folks in costume and plenty of treats to go around. Bring your kids most especially because they LOVE this event.

The Pastors are hosting a new participant gathering Coffee with the Pastors in the Senior Pastor’s Study in the main office on Sunday Oct. 27 right after worship. Come join us for an open conversation about you, our church and God’s presence in our lives. All questions encouraged! Yes really…all questions.

Holy Cow! (Church on Wednesdays) will commence on Wednesday Oct. 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm starting with a light supper, three programs to choose from and a short closing worship. We’ll have you fed, educated, blessed and out in two hours! Please come and bring a friend who always tells you they can’t “do” Sunday mornings.

One thing is certain, there is never a dull moment at First Church and it is you (and the Holy Spirit of course) who make it that way. Our entire Staff Team is excited to spend time with you enjoying the delicious October weather and to worship with you. As always, our doors are open to you and we are happy to meet with you for coffee/tea and conversation at other times that are convenient for you.

May God continue to bless you and your families this October,

Carla

From the Outreach Committee by Pat MendelsohnTHE POWER OF A GIFT

Former 350th Anniversary Capital Campaign Co-Chair Chris Hartwell with Pat and Bob Mendelsohn represented First Church at the ribbon cutting on September 20th to celebrate

the completion of Inspirica’s deeply affordable housing building, Franklin Apartments. The building features 53 apartments and CLC’s on-site preschool with 6 Head-Start classrooms for 48 children from birth to age 3. A full array of support services also will be available to residents.

Fairfield County is one of the most expensive housing jurisdictions in the nation. Deeply affordable housing, like Franklin Apartments, solves a critical need. The 26 studios, 17 two-bedrooms and 10 three-bedrooms will be home to residents who are working but not earning enough to pay market rents.

First Church’s $250,000 gift to Inspirica from the 350th Capital Campaign provided the seed money for the multi-million dollar project to help Inspirica in its mission to break the cycle of homelessness. Inspirica’s former CEO, Jason Shaplen credited it as giving him the confidence that this first of its kind deeply affordable housing could be successfully funded.

If your family has visited before or if you would like to join us now even if not in the 4th & 5th grade class, please let Rosemary know. Kettle Quilters' 50th Raffle

The 2020 Women’s Fellowship Raffle Quilt is finished and ready for the May auction. Completing any quilt is a great feeling of accomplishment after months of stitching. On rare occasion, there is frantic work to get the quilt done within a time constraint. This will be the 50th Raffle Quilt!

How do we explain that the Kettle Quilters have finished 200 quilts? When they started, the quilters brought their own projects and quilted for each other. There were not one but two quilts on frames in the Education Wing in what is now Craig’s office. Quilts were made to benefit Perrot Library and Hill House, among others. Years ago, the Women’s Fellowship hosted an annual antique show and a quilt was a featured auction item.

We are stitching a quilt that was cut and pieced together over 30 years ago. Ideas and fabrics are being selected to start the 2021 Raffle Quilt. There are plenty of talents needed and we welcome anyone any Monday morning from 9:00 am to noon in the Binney Conference Room. More information by emailing [email protected].

Our book study group will begin discussing our second pick of the fall, America's First Daughter by Stephanie

Dray and Laura Kamoie on October 10th. Please reserve your edition from our Greenwich Library or e-mail Jean Bruder to order your paperback version.

As Thomas Jefferson's oldest daughter, Patsy becomes his helpmate, protector, and constant companion in the wake of her mother's death. She travels with him when he becomes American minister to France. We experience their world in revolutionary America, Monticello and Washington City as well.

Join us on Thursday mornings, from 10:00 -11:30 am in the church lounge as we discuss this engrossing historical fiction tale.

Join your fellow church members on Saturday to stock the food pantry, sort and display clothing and linen contributions.

The Time Capsule created at the conclusion of the 350th Anniversary Celebration was placed in its permanent home in a wall in the newly renovated Narthex this summer. The site was sealed and will be identified with a plaque suggesting that it be opened on the 400th Anniversary of The First Congregational Church in 2065.

Many in the congregation, including our children, wrote and illustrated messages to the future members of our church for the Time Capsule. Others contributed objects that were meaningful to them. In addition, the Time Capsule contains historical documents, 350th Anniversary memorabilia, and photographs.

Flu Vaccine Season is upon us. The influenza vaccine helps protect you and your loved ones from getting the flu. For some of us the flu is uncomfortable and inconvenient, but for others (the very young, the very old, and the already ill) it can be life threatening. So even if you are feeling healthy and brave, consider getting immunized to protect others that you come in contact with.

The Town of Greenwich offers flu shot clinics beginning on October 3, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, at the Health and Wellness Expo at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center on Harding Road.

Additional town clinics will be offered on October 16, 17 & 22. For those with Medicare, bring your card and the vaccine will be covered. Individuals age 9 and older can be vaccinated at these clinics, however, insurances other than Medicare will not be billed and there is a fee.

More information about the flu vaccine and these Town of Greenwich flu shot clinics is available on a recorded phone message at 203-622-3774, on the Wellness bulletin board outside the Lounge, and at this link.

From the Parish Nurse by Sue Asselin, RN

On September 22, Paul and Susan Doyle from Oasis Senior Advisors were very informative on the topic of senior residences and care options, as one grows

older. From “aging in place” to skilled nursing facilities, and everything in between, the Doyles provided some clarity on a complex situation. If you missed it and would like some information about the event, ask me, your parish nurse - phone extension 821 or email [email protected]

Attention Medicare Enrollees: Are you paying too much for your prescription drugs and insurance coverage? The Medicare Part D prescription drug insurance open enrollment period is October 15 to December 7. The plan you had last year may not be the most cost effective plan this year. It is wise to review your options annually, especially if your medications have changed. Counseling, including navigating the Medicare.gov website, is available with your Parish Nurse and through the Greenwich Commission on Aging. For an appointment with your Parish Nurse, call Sue at extension 821. For an appointment with a Town of Greenwich trained counselor, contact the Commission on Aging at 203-862-6710.
