Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion

Hacienda Concepción, by Inkaterra’s newest lodge, is built in a former cacao and rubber plantation, on the grounds of what was back in the 50’s “Fundo Concepción”, an Amazonian medical catholic mission center. The National Geographic Society supported the restoration of the station. The projection onwards was to bring all interested travelers an opportunity to learn about nature and biodiversity first hand through unforgettable experiences in comfortable rainforest immersion. Hacienda Concepción, comprises 819 hectares of mostly primary rainforest, with a natural cocha or oxbow lake. It is home to diverse ecosystems, tropical plants, and wildlife. The lodge acts as a buffer zone between the Tambopata National Reserve and the shores of the vast Madre de Dios River, making the location of Hacienda Concepción a privileged one. This family-friendly lodge will introduce you to the biodiversity of the rainforest through the wide range of land and river fixed excursions in its surroundings. As you may have the opportunity to observe giant river otters, blue and yellow macaws, dusky titi monkeys, agoutis, two-toed sloths, peccaries, hoatzins, fly catchers, black caiman, ladder-tailed nightjar, among others.



Independent Cabañas We include Independent Cabanas – These are nicer and quieter than the rooms in the main building ‘Casa Grande’. Tambopata National Reserve The Rainforest A rainforest, or tropical forest, is a vast territory with high annual rainfall, very dense plant growth, and relatively constant warm temperature. Two-thirds of the world’s plant and animal species make their home in these immense rainforest regions, and many are believed to be yet scientifically unnamed. Tropical rainforests are called "jewels of the Earth" and the "Earth's lungs" since they are essential to sequester carbon dioxide and to release oxygen. Rainforests are also known as the "world's largest pharmacy", because of the many natural medicines discovered there. Hacienda Concepción has a medicinal botanical garden with some 200 indigenous vascular plant species. Weather Tropical (hot and humid) Day time average temperature: 89°F (32°C). At night it tends to get chilly. Varies from 77°F (25°C) to 107°F (42°C) December – March: Hottest season, with frequent afternoon rains. June – September: Occasional friaje (Patagonia Cold Fronts) can bring the temperature down to 50°F (10°C).



Fauna & Flora Wildlife in the Tambopata Reserve is remarkable. Giant colorful parrots, toucans, and macaws share the forest with tamarins, peccaries, black caimans and anacondas. Our region is home to hundreds of butterfly species and a large variety of monkeys, southern river otters, four feline species, and much more. Numerous world records for biodiversity have been broken here, and many species are still undiscovered. Tambopata Reserve holds the world record for ant species, 365 to be exact; as well as butterflies, over 1200 species to admire. Note: The Amazon rainforest has abundant wildlife, although many animals like to hide in the dense vegetation. Be aware that you may not actually see them. Access Daily flights connect Puerto Maldonado to Lima (2.15 hrs.) via Cusco (35 min.). The lodge is 5.5 mi. (8 km.) from Puerto Maldonado, about 25 min by outboard motorized canoe, downstream on the Madre de Dios River.

Walk into the Tambopata National Reserve through terra firma forest, towards Lake Sandoval. Then navigate by dugout canoe around this beautiful oxbow lake. Learn about the reserve’s conservation efforts, the lake’s formation, the water palms (Mauritia flexuosa) and the animals that inhabit this lake such as the endangered giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), blue and yellow macaws (Ara ararauna), red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus), black caimans (Melanosuchus niger), and one of the world’s biggest fresh water scaled fish, the paiches (Arapaima gigas). Afternoon - Inkaterra Canopy Walkway & Anaconda Walk Take a 20-minute ride by outboard motorized canoe to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center. Learn about its construction and the conservation projects of ITA-Inkaterra Asociación (NGO). Ascend one of the 98-foot towers (30 m.) and cross the 7 hanging bridges that connect the treetops at 91 ft. high (28 m.). Descend and take a walk along the 656-foot wooden bridge (200 m.) over the aguajales swamps (Mauritia flexuosa), home of the legendary anaconda. Learn about the fauna and flora of these flooded ecosystems, part of the largest natural monoculture in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. Afternoon - Cocha Take a dugout canoe ride on the Hacienda Concepción oxbow lake. Try native fishing applying the “catch and release” techniques, as you enjoy the scenery observing hoatzins (Opisthocomus hoazin), a diversity of fly catchers, and gray-necked woodrails (Aramides cajanea). Disembark at the remains of the Fitzcarraldo steam boat. Learn about its history and how it inspired Inkaterra to ask Werner Herzog to film the award-winning “Fitzcarraldo”, best director at Cannes, 1982. Private Afternoon Cusco City Tour Cathedral | Sacsayhuamán | Coricancha | Tambomachay | Puca Pucara | Qenko

We start the tour at the Inca ruins of Tambomachay. This was an Inca sanctuary dedicated to the cult of water, a place reserved for Inca Royalty. Consisting of a group of walls that are united by stairs, there are springs that cascade to a pool through several channels. The waterfalls in these ruins form part of a terrace to the second wall where the drainage cascades to the first and forms a small pool. The window sills, holes or niches are 2m height, and was the place, according to the historians, that the Inca and important people of his court offered water rights to the Sun God, Inti.



We then proceed on to visit Puca Pucara (Quechua for red fortress). This is an Inca archaeological site located again on the peak of a hill and is thought to be a military position and an administrative centre. Due to its proximity to Tambomachay, it is believed to have had a relationship with its defense, as well as the control of the route to Calca.



We proceed on to visit Qenko; a sanctuary dedicated to the adoration of animals, and consists of ruins formed by a rocky site with stairs in a zigzag, and a main building similar to a circular amphitheatre where 19 window sills are located as a way of seats. It is presumed that this place was a site of adoration, and supporting this presumption is the presence of an enormous stone block of 5.9m height that resembles the appearance of a puma. There is a labyrinthine entrance towards several underground galleries, passages, channels and stairs with signs of an earlier culture. These reveal themselves in a series of drawings and engravings including outstanding figures of pumas.



We then visit one of the most important Inca sites in South America the enormous Fortress of Sacsayhuamán.

Its construction took over seven decades and required the work of 20,000 men approximately, both for the foundations and hewn stone works, the transportation of materials, carving and stones setting. Hewn stones could have been located at Muina, Huacoto and Rumicolca, 20 kilometers away from Cusco, and at closer places such as Sallu, Rumi, Chita, Curovilca and Viracocha. Thereafter, we will visit Cusco Cathedral which is one of the finest Colonial Cathedrals in the Americas. Building started in 1560 and was declared completed in 1664. The design is constituted by a Latin - Cross base, the facade has a Renaissance style, very ornamental, and it contains the best manifestations of colonial goldsmith and wood carving, as well as a valuable collection of canvases from the Escuela Cusqueña (Academy of Cusco). There are two auxiliary chapels on its both sides: Capilla del Triunfo and Jesus, Maria y Jose.



Finally we proceed on to visit Coricancha (from the Quechua word Quri Qancha meaning 'Golden Courtyard'), originally named Inti Qancha (' Temple of the Sun') was it the most important temple in the Inca Empire, dedicated primarily to Inti, the Sun God. It was one of the most revered and respected temples of the city of Cusco, Peru. The walls and floors were once covered in sheets of solid gold, and the courtyard was filled with golden statues. Spanish reports tell of its opulence that was 'fabulous beyond belief'. The Church of Santo Domingo was built on the site, using the ruined foundations of the temple that was flattened by the Spanish in the 17th century, and is a fine example of where Inca stonework has been incorporated into the structure of a colonial building. Major earthquakes have severely damaged the church, but the Inca stone walls, built out of huge, tightly-interlocking blocks of stone, still stand thanks to the sophisticated stone masonry. Nearby is an underground archaeological site museum containing a number of interesting pieces, including mummies, textiles and sacred idols.

Introducing The Sacred Valley Tucked under the tawny skirts of formidable foothills, the beautiful Río Urubamba Valley, known as El Valle Sagrado (The Sacred Valley), is about 15km north of Cusco as the condor flies, via a narrow road of hairpin turns. Long the home of attractive colonial towns and isolated weaving villages, in recent years it has become a destination in its own right. Star attractions are the markets and the lofty Inca citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, but the Valley is also packed with other Inca sites. Trekking routes are deservedly gaining in popularity. Adrenaline activities range from rafting to rock climbing. Spend the day exploring this peaceful, fetching corner of the Andes. The archaeological sites of Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chinchero can be visited with a boleto turístico, which is included in the tour.



Pisac Market A famed hill town, Pisac is a great place to purchase top quality Andean knitwear at lower prices than visitors will find in major cities during their travels in Peru. Woven blankets, tapestries, and alpaca garments such as sweaters and mittens, colorful fabric and accessories are found in abundance at the Pisac market in addition to pottery, jewelry, and other handicrafts. Though Pisac’s biggest crafts market takes place on Sunday, you will find fewer tourists and smaller crowds in general if you visit the weekday craft markets. The village’s largest produce market is also held on Sunday, bringing a multitude of vendors from the countryside to supply the local population with produce, fresh from the fields.



Pisac Inca Ruins It’s not hard to succumb to the charms of sunny Pisac, a bustling colonial village at the base of a spectacular Inca fortress perched on a mountain spur.

Its pull is universal and recent years have seen an influx of expats and new age followers in search of an Andean Shangri-la. Located just 33km northeast of Cuzco by a paved road, it’s the most convenient starting point to the Sacred Valley. The ruins are separated along the ridge into four groups: Pisac, Intihuatana, Q'allaqasa, and Kinchiracay. The Intihuatana group includes the Temple of the Sun, baths, altars, water fountains, a ceremonial platform, and an Intihuatana, a volcanic outcrop carved into a "hitching post for the Sun" (or Inti). With military, religious, and agricultural structures, the site served at least a triple purpose. Researchers believe that Pisac defended the southern entrance to the Sacred Valley, while Choquequirao defended the western entrance, and the fortress at Ollantaytambo the northern. Inca Pisac controlled a route which connected the Inca Empire with the border of the rain forest.



Ollantaytambo After lunch, we proceed onto Ollantaytambo an attractive little town located at the western end of the Sacred Valley. The town has been built on top of original Inca foundations and is the best surviving example of Inca town planning.

The town is located at the foot of some spectacular Inca ruins which protected the strategic entrance to the lower Urubamba Valley. The temple area is at the top of steep terracing which helped to provide excellent defenses. Stone used for these buildings was brought from a quarry high up on the opposite side of the Urubamba River - an incredible feat involving the efforts of thousands of workers. The complex was still under construction at the time of the conquest and was never completed.



Posada Tunupa Lunch Lunch at Posada Tunupa is included. Posada Tunupa serves perhaps the finest buffet lunch in the Sacred Valley.

The Posada itself is set in extensive gardens with beautiful views across the Valley. Chinchero Chinchero was once one of the most important Inca towns in Peru. There is a lovely Colonial Church and a great plaza where a local market is held.

Guided Tour of Machu Picchu (2 – 3 Hours) Your tour to Machu Picchu will take you through the most important sites that comprise the citadel, where you can learn more about the incredible Inca civilization.

Within Machu Picchu there are a number of specific treasures that you can explore at your own pace. There are over 150 different palaces, temples, dwellings, and other structures within the citadel. Take time to get lost in its 75 acres of wonder and climb some of the citadel’s 10,000 steps. Famous Machu Picchu attractions include the Intihuatana stone, which points toward the sun at the winter solstice and may have acted as an astronomical calendar, and the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of Three Windows, both of which were devoted to the sun god Inti. The central buildings of Machu Picchu use the classical Inca architectural style of polished dry-stone walls. The Incas were masters of this technique, called ashlar, in which blocks of stone are cut to fit together tightly without mortar. Many junctions in the central city are so perfect that it is said not even a blade of grass fits between the stones.

Andahuaylillas: "Sistine Chapel of America" The church is of simple construction, made of thick adobe mud-brick walls, common in colonial buildings, and features a relatively modest structure: a single nave with a bell tower and a façade with two solid stone columns that stand out against the others around the main entrance. While the exterior of the church looks rather humble, it is the interior, that makes this one of the most valuable jewels of the colonial art in Peru, sometimes called the "Capilla Sixtina" or "Sistine Chapel" of America. Raqchi: "Temple of Wiracocha" The Temple of Wiracocha is an enormous rectangular two-story roofed structure that measures 300 ft. by 84 ft. This structure consists of a central adobe wall some 18 to 20 meters in height with an andesite base. Windows and doors allow passage. It is flanked on each side by a row of eleven columns.

People of potters, which retains the name of the first civilization of southern Peru, which dates back to 1600 years B.C. and archaeological remains of which, besides its lithic and ceramic pieces are exhibited in the Museum site. Pucara Puno has its origin in the Late Formative Period (200 BC – 200 AD) around Titicaca Lake in the Collao Plateau was one of an Aymara speaking cultures that flourished in that region.

Full Day Lake Titicaca Tour Lake Titicaca, at 3,820m above sea level, is the highest navigable lake in the world. At this altitude, the pure air creates wonderful light, and the views of the snow-capped Cordillera Real rising over the lake are superb. This immense body of water is home to the Uros people, who live on reed islands they have woven, and to the people of Taquile Island, who create some of the finest crafts in the Andes.

11:55 Arrival to the community of Santa Maria – Llachon, on the tip of the Capachica Peninsula, a very scenic off the beaten track destination. We are welcomed by a small community and quickly introduced to an intensive cross cultural experience, observe their traditions and participate in an ancient ceremony to learn about their magical world. Then experience the preparation of "Pachamanca" a traditional way of cooking meat, fish and potatoes using underground ovens - this is one of the main dishes of Peruvian cuisine. Enjoy these delicacies in a small, but very scenic, restaurant. 13:50 We leave Santa Maria. 14:25 Arrival to a remote area of the National Reserve of Lake Titicaca, and explore UROS Ccapi, these are considered as the last authentic floating islands, less commercial and little visited. The Uros are descendants of one of the oldest cultures in South America. Optional tours in reed boats. Return to Puno at 15:25 pm. 16:30 Arrival in Puno and transfer to hotel.

Sillustani Funerary Towers Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial ground on the shores of Lake Umayo near Puno in Peru. The tombs, which are built above ground in tower-like structures called chullpas, are the vestiges of the Colla people, Aymara who were conquered by the Inca in the 15th century. The structures housed the remains of complete family groups, although they were probably limited to nobility.

Useful Travel Information Departure Tax Departure taxes at airports are not included as a part of your tour. We have indicated below current amounts (although these can change at any time). For international flights departing from Lima a departure tax of US$30.25 is applicable per person. For domestic flights a departure tax of US $6.05 is applicable per person.

Machu Picchu Tours: Inti Punku (Sun Gate) (2 Hours round trip) Inti Punku the Sun Gate marks the entrance to Machu Picchu. It is a one hour uphill hike to the southeast of the Sanctuary, climbing more than 300 meters. The hike is on the original Inca trail and is paved with Inca stones. There is a spectacular view from the gate (pictured right).



Apu Machu Picchu (4 to 5 Hours Roundtrip) The hike to the summit of Apu Machu Picchu is 2 ½ hours and can be quite steep in places. This trail, accessed from Machu Picchu, joins parts of the Inca trail leading to the Sun Gate before climbing to the mountain's highest point. From there, enjoy the view of soaring eagles as well as Machu Picchu and other significant ruins in the area, such as Putukusi, Huayna Picchu, Salkantay mountain and the Vilcanota River view. This is a breath-taking hike with a lot of orchids along the way, birds in the bushy areas, and with every stop the view gets better and better. The climb is 600 meters uphill, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. *** Access to Apu Machu Picchu is controlled by special tickets which need to be purchased in advance by us. Access is 07:00 – 11:00. Please ask to have these tickets included in your tour if desired***



Inka Bridge (Bridge 1 Hour Round Trip) This hike is to the south west of Machu Picchu, a nice original trail that overlooks the Aobamba valley and the Hydro-electric plant. This Inca Bridge is a part of a mountain trail that heads west from Machu Picchu. The trail is a stone path, part of which is cut into a cliff face. A twenty-foot gap was left in this section of the carved cliff face, over a 1,900 foot drop that could be bridged with two tree trunks. When the tree trunks were removed, the trail became impassable to outsiders. The path is narrow and paved with original Inca stones. The steep trail continues on and climbs the side of the mountain, leading adventurous travelers to a remote corner of this archaeological site. In addition to a magnificent bird's-eye view of Machu Picchu, the summit also offers a perfect vantage point to the canyon of the Vilcanota River, the mountain of Putukusi, and the distant snow-capped Andean peaks.



Huayna Picchu (3 - 4 Hours) Huayna Picchu (Huayna Picchu or Young Peak) is the mountain you see behind Machu Picchu. Towering above the north end of Machu Picchu this steep mountain is often seen in the backdrop to the classic photos of the ruins. The mountain is steep, but stone steps are laid along most of the way and where the mountain is steeper you will find steel cables used as handrails. It is not a difficult climb for relatively fit people. On wet days you have to be very careful as things can turn dangerous quickly. Very Limited Access! Only 400 people are allowed to hike Huayna Picchu each day. You have to sign in at the entrance gate. The first 200 can enter at 7:00am, and are often gone in less than an hour on busier days. The second 200 are available at 10:00am. ***You should buy these special tickets in advance with us to be sure you are guaranteed a spot for this hike*** There are breath-taking views on your way up and some ruins near the top which many like to visit.



The most important thing about Huayna Picchu is the bird’s eye view of the whole of Machu Picchu from the top. More on the level of difficulty: You will be glad to see that the path is almost two meters wide, but at the beginning only, later it becomes narrower, and one side there is a steep fall. There are some accidents and even deaths every year so be aware this can be a quite dangerous hike. After a while you will find the path becomes really narrow - only a couple of feet wide and here the slope is really steep. In some parts the rocks are uneven and sometimes slippery as well but you will find hand rails along these areas.
