    Pastor Bob Brite

Meeting the challenges of many storms

We pray in sympathy for all those who have lost loved ones, especial-ly Karen Kandik, who lost her father Alfred John Kandik, for Do-rothy Stegner, who lost her nephew, the fourth family member Do-rothy has lost this year, and the family ofDon Wharff, former mem-ber of FCC who passed away recently; in celebration with all thosegraduating from learning institutions and with Joyce Swenson andMark Carlson who celebrated their 30th anniversary; for those reco-

vering from recent illnesses, including Belinda Flanagan who hadsurgery recently, Gigi Lowy, June Andrix, who is adjusting to as-sisted living, Mike Hesano's uncle Sharkey Hesano, who is expe-riencing complications from surgery for lung cancer, Kevin Berkey, suffering from skin problems, and Sharon, sister-in-law of KirstenCackoski, who is fighting cancer; for all those afflicted by stormsand tornados, especially our neighbors in North Minneapolis; for allour homebound members, including Elaine Moe and Dorothy Beck-er, Amen.

Thereve been a lot of stormsthis spring, havent there? The

ones that clobbered the south a

few weeks ago, and the onesover the past couple of weekshere, and especially over theweekend that clobbered Joplin,MO, and Minneapolis. Lastweek I went to my insuranceadjustor to go over the haildamage to my car from twoweeks ago. Lots of folks innorth Minneapolis are having

to do the same in the next

couple of weeks. Meteorolo-gists/climatologists are begin-ning to say that this more activeweather pattern might be whatwe will be facing for some timeto come. Oh, joy.

Human life is definitely full ofstorms, weather-related andotherwise. Physical storms thatleave us having to rebuild, rela-tional storms that sometimeshave us doing the same, health-related storms that test our abil-ity to cope, economic stormsthat have us doubting our abili-ty to copethe human journeyis frequently a journey throughsuch storms. It is also fre-quently a journey through sun-shine and Sonshine. What thespirit of Christ calls us to dowith the former is to learn from

them that we might grow as

souls; what that spirit calls usto do with the latter is to tastethe power of joy in our midstthat can help us at all times, stormy or not.

Each day for me presents achallenge to work through, andblessings (sometimes strangeones) for which I am called togive thanks. Sometimes thechallenge that I work throughone day is the same challengeagain the next. Yet respondingto the challenges is what allowsme to grow, and growing iswhat makes us fit for the eter-nal journey. Its always impor-tant to keep in mind where thejourney ultimately heads.

Id like to see YOU on Sunday,Bob

A prayer for those affected by natures storms

Gracious and loving God, we do come to you as a gracious and loving God even atthese times -- in fact, especially at these times of concern and worry and fear andloss. We ask that we would be fully aware of your presence at this time, O God; thatwe would know your loving embrace, that we would sense the strength that you giveto us, that you would give us creative and compassionate response.

Be with each of those who are in the way of rising water or blowing winds or ragingfire. Give neighbor the strength and compassion to reach out to neighbor. Give the

agencies of government and civil organizations the preparedness to gather peopleready to respond well and fully. We give you thanks, O God, for the ministries of thechurch, for the ways that we attempt to be the hands and the feet and the voice andthe heart of Jesus in these times.

Give us strength, O God, that in the face of the power of nature we will know thepower of your love. In fact, we will be the power of your love: the witness, the testi-mony of how much you love each one of your children. Be with each one now who isfacing loss, who is needing courage and hope. For we pray it in Jesus name, Amen.

A church in Montgomery, Alabama, jumped to actionwhen tornadoes hit. A good way to help is to donatetoWeek of Compassion, which posts updates about

relief work around the country and around the world.

The tornado that struck North Minneapolis on Sun-day, May 22, went through Pastor Dennis Sanders

neighborhood, but luckily, his house and the hous-es on the block were not hit. However, all aroundwas devastation: trees blocking streets, houses andbusinesses damaged, and great difficulties gettingaround.

Rev. Sharon Watkins, general minister and Presi-dent of the Disciples of Christ, offered a prayerthrough herblogfor all those around the countrysuffering from natures blasts, from flooding alongthe Mississippi to fires in Texas to tornadoes in Al-abama, and Missouri.

Reflections on the Wordfrom readings for Pentecost 6.12.11

In the last days it will be, God dec-lares, that I will pour out my Spiritupon all flesh.... Acts 2:17 quoting

    Joel 2:28ff

With the tornadoes the day after thesupposed rapture, we get real ques-tions of why God permits suffering, and indeed seems to want to destroythe world at some scary but unknownfuture date. What is going on? Wecannot know the day and hour, butwhy does there have to be a day andhour? Why does God comfort withone hand and seem to afflict with theother, seeming to cause acts we call

    of God?

Great and mighty God, you are theseat of power in the Cosmos. See usthrough times of trial, as you prom-ise this in the name of your Son, Je-sus. Amen. Chris Wogaman
