PASTORAL PEREGRINATIONS BY REV. BILL COBURN!

We have almost completed a sermon series on the Seven Deadly Sins, the listing of which was first credited to John Cassian, a fifth century monk. These sins, in no particular order are: Sloth, Lust, Pride, Envy, Anger, Gluttony and Greed. At the beginning of the series, we defined sin as anything that separates us from the love of God and, by extension, each other (Gk. hamartia--“missing the mark”). Augustine wrote that “sin is any word or deed or thought against the eternal law.” When we sin, something must take place in order to reestablish a right relationship with God and each other. We begin to restore that relationship by first acknowledging that we have, indeed sinned and that acknowledgment is followed by an act or acts of repentance (Gk. metanoia- “turning around”) or atonement, the means by which the guilt-punishment chain produced by violation of God’s will is broken. Atonement leads to reconciliation (“at-onement”) with God. Reconciliation (Gk. kata#age) is a term indicating the changed relationship for the better between persons or groups who were formerly an enmity with each other. The New Testament encourages reconciliation between both estranged parties (Matthew 5:24; Luke 12:58) and spouses (1 Cor. 7:11).!

As I wind down my stint as interim minister at First Christian Church, I want to encourage you to spend some time examining your relationships with each member of your family, your friends (or former friends) and your God. Make an honest assessment of each of those relationships and ask yourself if you have “missed the mark” and damaged your relationship with people whom you care the most. If you have, admit it, then begin the process of turning those relationships around. It may take some time, but you will find that taking the time to reconcile differences with family and friends is time well spent. Reconciling your differences with others will help you reestablish not only a right relationship with them but also with God and with yourself, bringing an inner peace you may not have known for a very long time. May you know the peace of reconciliation. ~~Yours in Christ, Bill

PUMPKIN PATCH 2014 NEWS ! Pumpkins are scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, Oct. 8th at 4:00 p.m. We need all hands on deck to help unload pumpkins that evening. We are trying some new strategies this year to perhaps make the unloading a bit easier--but we still need many volunteers on hand to do this. We have many jobs at unloading--even for people who cannot carry pumpkins.!! Volunteers are needed to sign up for times to sell pumpkins. See the sign up sheets across the hall from the Preschool Director’s old office. Volunteers are needed to read for story times in the patch (10:00 - 2:00 p.m.) Contact Jennifer Grooms or the church office if you can share a story or two and monitor the patch during this time.!! The Executive Board voted that this year we would keep the Patch up and running as a community event. The Patch funds have not been part of the church’s general operating budget and have been used to support mission work (including preschool scholarships) and youth activities. To encourage the community to participate, we will donate 60% of the church’s net profits after overhead cost are met to a community charitable agency. 40% of the net will be put back in the Patch account for youth activities and mission work. Members of the congregation nominated the following groups - Casper Humane Society, Hospice, Homeless School Children Account, Self Help Center, the Safe House, Food for Thought, Youth for Christ, Seton House, & CWRM. The congregation voted on Sunday, Sept. 7th to donate this year’s funds to the Central Wyoming Rescue Mission.!! Stacy Ballard, one of our preschool teachers, will be facilitating Patch logistics this year. Please do not hesitate to contact Jennifer Grooms with questions or concerns regarding the Patch. Messages for Stacy can be left at the church office or with Jennifer. !! Dennis Baker is coordinating palette placement and pumpkin unloading. Please contact him or Jennifer if you have a four wheeler that we could use to assist in the movement of pumpkins. Once again he cannot do this by himself. We needs lot of help on the 8th. Plan to be there for service and fellowship.!

Offertory Steward for October - Paul Hallock

~~A message from Rev. Cynthia McBride~~~!! Dear Church Family, Thank you ALL for your prayers, lovely cards and online heartfelt greetings at the sudden death of my brother. As Charles and I immediately changed sabbatical plans (and cut short my study time at the University of Chicago) and drove to Dalhart, Texas for David’s funeral, I was thankful to know our church family was holding us in prayer. Since we were “so close” we stayed in New Mexico to be with my family a bit longer and then travelled to Arizona to see Charles’ brother as well. Now we’re back “on track” with the sabbatical schedule --time for me to hold up in a cabin in Colorado and work on the Psalms project... (Some of the Psalms of lamentation hold new power for me in the midst of this season of grief...) then we’ll fly to California for the Disciples National Pastor’s Conference. I look forward to be back with you all in October.!! Thank you again for your prayers as we travel--and a special word of thanks to Paul Hallock and Bill Coburn for covering funerals here while I am away. May God’s Spirit sustain all who are living through times of loss.!! With peace and gratitude for your loving prayers. Pastor Cynthia

CWF would like to thank all who assisted in anyway with the receptions following the funerals held during the summer months. Your dedication and willingness to help is very much appreciated.

Please use the elevator to access as AA will be meeting in the Fellowship Hall.!!SUNDAY LUNCH OUT -- Luka is also starting a monthly Dutch Lunch Date for people of all ages, but is especially hoping that people who are alone or single might attend.
