A Time To....

Many of you are probably familiar with these lines from the book of

Ecclesiastes (or know them from the song “Turn, Turn, Turn” originally

composed by Pete Seeger and made most famous by The Byrds in the

1965):

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a

time to be born, and a time to die.... (3:1-2a)

We have certainly experienced the truth of those lines in the last two months here at

First Christian. We have had six deaths in our congregational family during that time.

We also experienced a glorious Easter Sunday where we went well past the 300 mark in

worship attendance. Some of our flock have experienced very serious illnesses and hos-

pitalizations. We have several of our young people studying and learning in preparation

for baptism on Pentecost. We have joined with our prayers and our gifts to respond to

those lives devastated by awful spring storms across the Midwest and South and by the

flooding following from those storms. We are experiencing an increasing number of

Sunday worship visitors, many of whom tell us “we never knew there was a church like

this!”

One preacher, commenting on the writer of Ecclesiastes’ words, said that they reflect

the “two-sidedness” of life. And even just that small listing of what life has been like

in our congregation in the last two months shows how apt that phrase is! And such two-

sidedness will continue to be our constant companion: for life changes, the culture

around us changes, church changes, and, if we’re fortunate, those changes will include

learning new things, finding new life, finding new hope, making new commitments to new

ministries done in new ways.

Continued from Page 1

It is because of that hope of new life and new commitment that I am excited about this Sunday’s

(May 22) congregational meeting in which we shall vote on the Trustees’ recommendation for fund-

ing “The Ministry Plan.” This three-to-five year plan for responding to God’s hopes for us even

amidst life’s two-sidedness has been prayerfully considered by the Trustees, the Elders, the Execu-

tive Committee, the Board, the Personnel Committee, the Missions and Outreach Committee, and, of

course, the all-church town hall meeting in March. Every one of those groups have given enthusias-

tic endorsement to the plan for using some of our “Tejon Monies” to commit ourselves to staff and

other initiatives in the coming years that will truly help us respond to Christ’s dual commandments:

to bring the Good News to those who so need it and to better love another (Matthew 28:19 and

John 13:34). The Ministry Plan is a continuing and key step in our living out what we identified as

our vision: radical hospitality, outrageous generosity, and joyful service. (If you happen to have not

yet seen it, a copy is on the church website or the church office can mail you one).

The General Board has already approved the concept of the Plan; but the decision about funding that Plan is in your hearts and hands this Sunday. Even amidst life’s two-sidedness, even amidst the

real anxiety about the future we all have, even amidst both our “bright hopes for tomorrow” (as the

hymn says) and our fears about tomorrow (there’s that two-sidedness again!), I hope that you will

join together to say a resounding “YES” to this initiative. For our goal as a church, as a congrega-

tion, is not simply to exist, it is not simply to maintain our beautiful building, it is not simply to con-

serve what we have while fearing that each year we shall have less. No, our goal is to respond to

Christ’s call to serve the world, from these doorsteps, as I am fond of saying, to the very ends of

the earth!

Are there guarantees that the Ministry Plan will succeed? No; there are very few guarantees in any

area of life. But that is not the question that we should be asking. Rather, let me borrow a question

from Alan Pollard (whose permission I have to quote) who shared this question in an Elders meeting:

“What will First Christian Church be known for?” I believe that the approval of The Ministry

Plan will open us up to powerful new ways in mission and service and hospitality of answering that

question. The Plan’s new staffing and programming initiatives will help launch us together into new

answers to that question. And that’s exciting.

To everything there is a season. I believe that it is our season at First Christian Church to step out

with a joyful commitment to even better expressing our desire to indeed be those who are known

for their “radical hospitality, extravagant generosity, and joyful service.”

See you Sunday!

"Moderator, Bruce E. Smith, has called for the Congregation Annual Meeting to occur June 26, 2011, following the 11:00am worship service. The purpose of the meeting is to elect officers for the com-ing year, wrap up the just ending year and hear of the hope for our congregation in the coming year(s). The congregation is invited to bring a "covered dish" to share in a "pot luck" lunch. The lunch will precede the meeting."

Why are we interested in small groups? Consider the object to the left of this text. The Church as a whole is represented by the area enclosed by the green oval. We meet as a larger group for Worship and this establishes our larger identity. The smaller ovals inside the green oval represent the small groups in the church. Some of these overlap with other groups, others are self contained and some ex-tend outside our regular worship community. If you find yourself inside the larger green oval, but not yet connected to one or more of the small groups, let us know and we will try to point you toward a group that would fit your interests. If you have an interest that is not represented in our current set of groups and would like to develop an interest or study group, we will try to help you develop that also. Possible new groups might be: fishing, walking the parks, going to a baseball game, playing bridge, visiting in a neighborhood group, a book discussion group, gardening or other activities I have not listed here. The meeting times for the current groups may be found on the FCC Calendar on the FCC web page. Norman Heimer, Coordinator of Small Group Ministries

The Music Ministry by Ray Killian

“How often, making music, we have found

a new dimension in the world of sound, as

worship moved us to a more profound Al-

leluia!” Fred Pratt Green Dear People It is with a sense of anticipation and excitement that I announce the Spiritual Development (Worship and Music) Team’s recommendation that our church pursue the purchase of the Chalice Hymnal. This resource is the official hymnal of the Disciples of Christ. What you may not know is that in addition to the Chalice Hymnal’s being widely used in most Disciples congregations, the hymnal has been purchased by congregations from many different denomi-nations because they have found it such an aid to worship. I thought I would share some thoughts on why we are doing this, and how it may be of great benefit to aid in our worship, in addition to some thoughts on the use of lan-guage. WHY DO WE NEED A NEW HYMNAL?

This is probably the most obvious question. We want to be able to sing our theology, beliefs and corporate identity. Our songs are the back-bone of who we are, expressing our identity, message and mission to ourselves and our God. In addition, the worship life of our congregation is central to our growth. This hymnal will be an important contribution to the worship life of our church. Our current hymnal, Sing Joyfully, while having served its purpose for many years, is outdated and difficult to use given its many theological components that do not well-watch who we Disciples are. (For example, our current hymnal has no categorizing of hymns by the “church year” – thus no Advent, Pentecost, etc. – and there are very few communion hymns – which of course is the center of our weekly worship). It was purchased in circa 1993 and some of the books are now frayed and old with pages miss-ing. After too many years, it is time for re-sources that will incorporate wonderful new songs (including the Psalms!) and include, as best as possible, the languages, cultures, and understandings of our church.

WHY THIS PARTICULAR

HYMNAL?

This hymnal set will help articulate our church’s identity, message, and mission. And so it’s im-portant that we repre-sent the diversity and global nature of Disciple’s of Christ churches. We want to honor and affirm our rich heritage as members of a universal body of Christ as well as our identity in a modern context. We also want to speak clearly to the current con-text of human life (with all its wonderments and struggles), using metaphors and rhythms of the twenty-first century. In addition, there are over forty psalm settings, which could be a wonderful aid to our worship. Lastly, the re-sources that accompany this hymnal will be used by the staff to further enhance worship. There are instrumental resources, hand bell re-sources, reference resources, and others. This was a project that was very well done. One of the best things about The Chalice Hymnal is that it truly reflects our wide diversity as Disci-ples. For example, from the beginning, the compilers of this hymnal insisted that there be a wide form of address for God – for after all, God is experienced in a wide variety of ways. No one sort of language or address captures those experiences and so you will find hymns with the “old” language as well as hymns that offer other perspectives on God, Christ, and church. Moreover, whether “old” or “new,” the Chalice Hymnal’s compilers gave exquisite at-tention making the music of high quality. No hymn is included just because it’s “new.” But some of the most beautiful hymns of the last two decades are included because they are theologically and musically lovely. The compil-ers of the hymnal had a sensitive ear for po-etry, and compared to some other hymnals, any “changes” that have been made to hymns were not done with any sort of “agenda” – ex-cept for enhancing worship and offering more avenues to bring more people to God! And that, it seems to me, is part of what the “radical hospitality” we are seeking is all about!

A Moment with God on the Labyrinth Chris Straka, Spiritual Development (Worship and Music) Team

On a recent visit to the church office I spotted some activity out on the labyrinth, and commented to our church secretary that she had “kids” playing out in the yard. Kathe replied that they weren’t kids, at least not that day, but that it was just one of several groups who use our labyrinth in a spiritual way. I was floored. You see I was surprised that anyone actually recognized the labyrinth for what it was, much less used it for why we built it. It makes me smile, because I remember how much contro-versy the whole idea of a labyrinth generated. We can seldom accurately guess how our actions will affect the future. From a practical point of view, the labyrinth seemed like a good way to cover up the grass, rather than pay for increasingly expensive irrigation. Ironically, the church was later assessed a run-off water fee (later repealed) for the hard surface. The plan-ning committee thought the labyrinth would create a useful space for outdoor gatherings, which it did when we gathered kids for the opening and closing of Vacation Bible School. There was also some sentiment by a few that a labyrinth was inappropriate, and hon-ored a pagan practice. As it turns out we have a number of groups which regularly use the labyrinth to access their spiritual side. There is a teacher from Palmer High School, who often brings her (or is it his) philosophy class to the labyrinth. This is for intentional encounters, not for impromptu, “gee, it’s nice out” field trips. The class actually uses the area for spiritual, philosophical discussions. Several adult groups, as well as students from Colorado College, visit our labyrinth for spiritual encounters. How gratifying must this be to the labyrinth supporters? For in a world where we spend most of our thoughts on the worldly, we’ve managed to shift that attention (for a growing number) to the otherworldly, to the spiritual, to an encounter with God. It makes me smile and it gives me hope.

We want your Christmas Decorations and Materials! Chrismons: The plan is to repair and freshen up the beautiful Chrismons and angels for the front of the sanctuary. Up close they show need for TLC. We need gold and white supplies, such as pearl beads, or gold beads, gold cord, any gold or white supplies. The variety will add to the richness. We also need clear plastic storage bins to preserve the Chrismons. Actual work starts in September. Contact Jan Haley to volunteer.

ESM tree, Table scape, Wreaths, Other Decorations. Also, We will update old decora-tions in the church and plan ESM tree and table scape and other wreaths. The tree needs red, green, and gold print material that are being made into ornaments and a skirt. We also want traditional or hand made items that will go with this red, green, and gold hand made look. We need a set of dishes, materials for the table covering, centerpiece and even mantle accessories. As we see our treasures we will design further. Volunteers and supplies appreciated.

Updating FCC Decorations and more ESM: Any no longer desired Christmas decora-tions that look newer than what we have or can benefit from repurposing can find a new home. I have several wreaths and other table decorations to spruce up and do-nate to the ESM sale. The church has lots of update needed. Just put a note "Christmas decorations" and I will pick them up from church as they accumulate. Jan Haley 598-6920

To the group who made my card and beautiful Easter basket. In all my 101 years and 5 months, I had never received an Easter Basket. And to get one this pretty. You’ll never know how much joy and happiness it has meant to

me. Thanks to loving hands and the lady who de-livered it. God bless you all. Martha Van Gundy.

Thanks so much. A simple act of kindness has a beauty all its own. Thank you for your kind-ness. Dear Members, I really was surprised with the lovely Easter Basket you gave me. It brought back a lot of memories. Thank you, Dorothy Myers

Done in a Day—Missions and Outreach. A small but dedicated group of volunteers met on a beautiful Saturday morning to have breakfast and to receive their assignments for Done in a Day. They took their tools and cheerfully went to help out some of our congregants. They were seen mowing yards, unclogging gutters, tilling flower beds, planting flowers, cleaning closets, sweeping patios and garages and other small chores. A big thank you goes to Bev and Lowell Olson, Tyler Hedges, Don and Debbie Metz, Alan and Carol Pollard, Betsy and Chris Straka, Marsha Bishop and Nancy May for their participation in this worthy mission of our church. We plan on doing another Done in the Day in the fall so please consider joining us in this quick but powerful mission experience. Nancy May

This is a smoke-free, alcohol-free celebration.

On June 12-17, the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists is hosting a Pipe Organ En-counter at the downtown churches in Colorado Springs, including FCC. This event is a week-long in-tensive program to introduce young musicians ages 13-18 to the world of the pipe organ and church music. The students will have a daily organ lesson, practice time, workshops and seminars on vari-ous aspects of organ playing: music, choir directing, handbell choirs, organ construction, opportuni-ties for careers in church music; attend concerts, recreation events, and play in a recital at the end of the week. These students must be chaperoned at all times. If you’d like to volunteer a block of time in the morning or afternoon during this week to help out, please see Carol Wilson, call her at the church at 633-8888, or drop her an e-mail at [email protected]. Opportunities include being pre-sent while students practice (sit and read a book), providing transportation between churches, walk-ing with a group of students between events, or helping provide snacks during breaks in activ-ity. Due to security requirements, the AGO will need to do a routine background check on anyone who will have contact with the students. Many of the young organists currently serving in churches got their start playing the organ at Pipe Organ Encounters, so helping with this event will be your contribution to assuring that churches of the future will be able to find organists to serve in their worship services.

The Office of Language, Culture and Equity at the Colorado Department of Education announced the selection of Carol Pollard as the 2011 LCE Educator of the Year. Pollard is an English language development coordinator for Harrison School District Two in Colorado Springs. Pollard started as a paraprofessional in the English as a Second Language program for Harrison and decided later to pursue a teaching career. She com-pleted her teacher training in one year at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Pollard taught in a general education classroom for a couple of years before she was recruited to teach ESL in the same classroom she had worked as a paraprofessional. While raising her son, she worked part-time as a consultant for the English Language Development program and was a sub-stitute teacher, a Spanish teacher and library teacher. In 2000 she was hired as the English language development coordinator for Harrison School District Two. “We are very proud of Carol and her accomplish-ments within our district,” said Dan Snowberger, executive director of schools for Harrison School District Two. “Harrison students continue to ex-ceed state averages for language acquisition as measured by CELA (Colorado English Language Acquisition Proficiency Assessment) as a result of her leadership, support of building principals and knowledge. This recognition is well-deserved and we are proud to have one example of ‘excellence’ within the state of Colorado.” In addition to coordinating the ELD program for Harrison for the past 10 years, Pollard has also helped develop the ESL Certification Program for the CU’s Department of Education in Colorado Springs, contributed as an active member of the Pikes Peak ESL Directors’ Group, served on the Supporting Immigrant and Refugee Families Ini-tiative, and is a member of the Colorado Teach-ers of English to Students of Other Languages and the Association for Supervision and Curricu-lum Development. Pollard also serves as a mem-

ber of the Parent Advisory Team at her son’s school and of the Language, Culture and Equity Advisory Committee for the Colorado Department of Education. “Ms. Pollard’s enthusiasm and passion for cultur-ally and linguistically diverse students and their families is noteworthy,” said CDE Assistant Com-missioner Barbara Medina. “She is a true leader in her district and in the Pikes Peak region. She continually advocates with school and district ad-ministrators for programming that best serves the culturally and linguistically diverse population that Harrison has, and prepares staff to meet the needs of these students. Since Ms. Pollard has been in her current position, Harrison has seen significant growth with their English learners, as well as meeting their accountability targets. Ms. Pollard also serves as a mentor to other regional ELA coordinators and was instrumental in the creation of the Pikes Peak ESL Director’s Group. Her never-ending advocacy and willingness to go the extra mile is commendable.” The LCE Educator of the Year award is in its fourth year. Districts from around the state nominate educators who they feel are deserving of this award. The Language Culture and Equity Office, along with its advisory council, review the nominees and make the selection.
