    ife Songs that ring…

“This is the first time in a while these walls have heard singing.” That was Scott Griffin’s words to our youth the other night. Taylor had taken them to an easily and safely accessed room in the education building, and, without wall coverings and carpet, that

space rang in song. It was beautiful.

It made me think of the songs that ring in my life: Amazing Grace, Blessed Assurance, How Great Thou Art, The Old Rugged Cross, or Holy, Holy, Holy. I thought of some of the Holy Week hymns that were not a part of my childhood but which I hold so dear today: What Wondrous Love is This?, Were You There?, Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed, or Go to Dark Gethsemane. Even as I write this, I’ve heard diverse pieces from Thy Word and Draw Me Close to the more Taize inspired music like The Lord Upholds My Life and Jesus, Remember Me. (Thanks to Pandora; I have a

    Lenten music channel!)

My reflections took me to the Psalms - the hymn book of ancient Israel - to words we can hear over and over. One of the ancient modes of re-connection with God has been through the singing or the reading of the Psalter, the Psalms. When we do this devotionally where we listen for God to speak, it has often amazed me how the Psalms speak to my joys and my sorrows. The Psalmists are honest about the pain and anguish

of life, but they also point to the great joy of knowing God and God’s faithfulness to us.

Psalm 24 speaks boldly to this. “The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.” The Psalmist makes clear who the Lord of all is. Everything is ultimately belongs to the Lord, including us. The Psalmist ends with that phrase that lives on in Handel’s Messiah: Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of

    glory!

Many scholars have noted the connections between Psalm 22, 23 and 24. As we approach Holy Week, I encourage us to live with these three Psalms; these have been in the order we have them in our Bibles for millennia. Indeed, they were already in the order when Jesus sings Psalm 22 from the cross: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? The Psalm ends with hope, but it speaks to the great pains of life. Psalm 23 then speaks deeper about that hope for the Lord is our shepherd. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, we need not fear. Indeed, the 23rd Psalm answers the question of the 22nd. The Lord has not forsaken the children of God; the Lord is their shepherd all the way to the end.

Subsequently, Psalm 24 speaks the greatest reality: The Lord is the King of Glory.

Think about that. Jesus is in anguish of the ignominy of his trial, of the Way of Sorrows (Via Dolorosa), and of hours on the cross. Yet, it is in that moment that he sings the first

line of a song. A song that leads to the triumph of Psalm 24. It’s a song that rings for us.

These three Psalms remind us of a great progression: Our Lord does not forsake us; our Lord is our shepherd; and our Lord is the Lord of all. I hope that you will take time to read these three Psalms together. Their message, individually and corporately, is powerful. As we contemplate them in Holy Week, we may just hear walls singing with

    praise.

    Grace and peace, Kendell Cameron

End of Year Recognition Service: Wednesday May 3rd

Mark your calendars for our annual Children and Youth Recognition Service. This service

will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May

3rd. During this time, we will celebrate the

work of our children and youth throughout

the year in Missions, Music, and Ministry. This

is always a special time as we recognize our

children who are preparing to move up to

News From The Jubilant Senior Team for All The Jubilant Senior Members

The Jubilant team has had a busy and successful winter, and we “thank all Senior members” who supported us. The Valentine’s Gala (per Senior Members) was a delightful evening with an

attendance of 107 people. Food, décor and entertainment graded at 100%.

The trip on March 9th to Clemmons, NC was also a hit for all who went to taste cookies at Mrs. Hane’s Cookie Factory, and with having the new PA system on the bus was indeed a delight for

    all!

The team is taking a break for April to give all seniors time to enjoy the celebration of Easter and to enjoy the “buds and the birds” of spring, but don’t get too relaxed, because we do have

    plans for May 19th.

Mark your calendars now to join your team in the Fellowship Hall on Friday, May 19th at 11:45 am for a “SPRING-RECIPE-FLING!” Which is simply at noon, a covered dish luncheon. The Team and Senior fund will provide plenty of fried chicken, bread and beverages. Senior members

come with all of your favorite recipes to share in order to have a “SPRING-FLING”!

Start calling Frances now to sign up for this festive event which will be the last one until

September. The team is off for the summer!
