FIRST AID PROCEDURES

ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY STAFF IF A CHILD IS INJURED

The course of action taken should in no way compromise the health and safety of the other pupils in the

setting. Under no circumstances should children be left unsupervised while a member of staff escorts a

child to the medical room.

PRE-PREP INCLUDING EYFS AND OUT OF HOURS CARE

In the Pre-Prep department including the EYFS provision and Out of hours Care, a Paediatric First Aider

should assess the child immediately. Once they have assessed the situation they must decide on which

of the following actions must be carried out;

Treat the child and document the injury in the accident book

Escort the child to the medical room for treatment by either the First Aid Leader or/other

Paediatric qualified staff member

Summon the First Aid Leader/Paediatric qualified staff member and offer treatment as the injury

requires

In an emergency situation summon a member of staff to call an ambulance immediately, apply

immediate first aid as required and ensure the First Aid Leader/ Paediatric qualified staff member

is contacted.

UPPER SCHOOL

In the Upper School a first aider should assess the child immediately. Once they have assessed the

situation they must decide on which of the following actions must be carried out;

Send the child to the medical room to be treated by the First Aid leader/ Paediatric qualified staff

member They should be accompanied by another child.

First Aider escorts the child to the medical room for treatment

Summon the First Aid Lead/ Paediatric qualified staff member and provide treatment as the

injury requires

In an emergency situation summon a member of staff to call an ambulance immediately, apply

immediate first aid as required and ensure the First Aid Leader/ Paediatric qualified staff member

is contacted.

SUMMONING THE FIRST AID LEAD/DESIGNATED PERSON

There are a number of ways that this can be actioned and the member of staff must use their judgment

to assess the best course of action for any particular situation;

Page 5: FIRST AID POLICY - hallfield.s3.amazonaws.com & Safety... · Last Review February 2017 Hallfield First Aid Policy FIRST AID PROCEDURES ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY STAFF IF A CHILD IS INJURED

OUTINGS

The First Aid Lead/Designated Person supplies a first aid kit to be taken on outings.

When a child becomes unwell or injured off-site the first aider accompanying the child must take

immediate action to treat the child. If visiting an establishment off site then the first aider at the venue

must be contacted. In the event of a serious injury parents and/or carers should be contacted as soon

as possible. Contact details and medical information of the children on the trip are supplied by First Aid

Leader/Designated Person

Parents and/or carers of children in the EYFS provision must be informed of any accident or injury

sustained by the child on the same day, or as soon as reasonably practicable and of any first aid

treatment given.

Adults who are unwell or who are injured during the school day should see the First Aid

Leader/Designated Person as soon as possible or send for them. The First Aid Leader/Designated Person

will assess the adult and the take the appropriate action. Treatment of adults will be documented in the

accident book in the medical room. This includes all visitors and parents on the site.

The Estate’s Manager and members of the Estate’s and Admin team are First Aiders; they will provide

staff First Aid over out of term time.

TRANSPORTING CHILDREN TO HOSPITAL

If a child needs emergency treatment for an accident, injury or illness the First Aid Leader will dial 999

or delegate this task to another person. The First Aid Leader will then contact (or delegate someone else

to contact) the parents. Parents will either be asked to come to school if travel time allows or meet the

child at the hospital. If the parent cannot make it to school on time a member of staff known to the child

will accompany them. The First Aid Leader will stay on site they will inform the Head Master and in the

case of an EYFS or other Pre-Prep child, the Head of Pre-Prep.

CALLING AN AMBULANCE (See ‘Action in an Emergency’ appendix)

In the event of a serious or life threatening incident an ambulance should be called to the school.

Guidance on calling an ambulance (compiled with the approval of West Midlands Ambulance Service),

is kept by every phone in the school.

NOT MOVING A SERIOUSLY INJURED VICTIM

Teaching, administrative and ancillary staff are reminded regularly of the dangers involved in moving a

seriously injured child or adult and of the procedure to be followed in such circumstances, that is, that

the First Aid Leader/Designated Person should be contacted without delay and an ambulance

summoned if necessary.

RECORD KEEPING OF ILLNESS AND ACCIDENTS

Accidents are recorded in the accident book. Due to the size of the site to ensure accurate and swift

documentation more than one accident book is kept. There are accident books at;

Hallfieldfirst

Pre-Prep

Transition

Medical Room located in Pre-Prep

Front Office

Bistro/Upper School Out of Hours Club

Out of Hours Care use the same accident books.

Parents and/or carers of children in the EYFS provision are informed of any accident or injury sustained by a child and of any first aid treatment given on the same day, or as soon as reasonably practicable through the provision of a copy of the child’s entry in the accident book and verbal feedback when the child is collected. Parents and/or careers of children in KS1 and the Upper School are provided with a copy of the child’s entry in the accident book detailing the nature of the accident or injury and any treatment given. The First Aid Leader/Designated Person contacts parents/carers at the time of treatment if it is deemed necessary for them to be informed prior to collecting their child, for example if the child has an injury affecting their ability to participate fully in activities/ lessons.

During term time the First Aid Leader/Designated Person reviews the accident books on a weekly basis

and informs the Deputy Head immediately of any patterns or concerns. During the holiday period the

manager of Hallfieldfirst reviews the accident book on a weekly basis.

The First Aid Leader/Designated Person or Estates Manager will notify the Health and Safety Executive

(0845 300 99 23) of any diseases and major accidents.

Children are required to wear sun hats at break times and whenever participating in activities outdoors. There are planned shaded areas around the campus and staff remind children to seek shade when the sun is strong.

FIRST AID MATERIALS ON SITE

First aid kits are held at various locations throughout the school. There are notices around the school highlighting the locations of first aid kits. The stock is checked regularly by the First Aid Leader/Designated Person and any deficiencies made good. A record of these checks is kept in the first aid kit and the medical room. There is a supply of additional first aid resources in the medical room.

There is an emergency pack ready in the medical room, this consists of; emergency contact numbers for pupils; a large first aid box and fluorescent jacket. This is to be taken with the First Aid Leader/Designated Person (if safe to do so) in the event of a fire alarm or major incident.

CLINICAL WASTE AND HYGIENE PROCEDURES FOR DEAL WITH THE SPILLAGE OF BODY FLUIDS

There is a clinical waste bin in the medical room, for disposal of any contaminated waste.

If there is a spillage of bodily fluid then the area should be isolated immediately. The member of staff

cleaning the spillage should wear personal protective equipment, which would be a minimum of
