Fireworks Planned for Downtown Saturday, June 30th

The Chamber is just one of many local organizations that are coming together to bring a big event and fireworks

show to downtown on Saturday, June 30th for the 2nd Annual Route 66 Celebration. A local organizing commit-tee was formed to carry on the tradition of fireworks in Amarillo to celebrate America and the official Mother

Road of Route 66 that passes through our town.

We know...the 30th is NOT July 4th. However, years ago the decision was made to hold Amarillo’s fireworks

event on the Saturday before the Independence Day holiday for several reasons. One is out of respect for the Canyon Chamber of Commerce event that is held on the actual holiday, and another being the difficulty to find

volunteers willing to give up their holiday time with family and friends. We think that our country and its heroes can never be celebrated enough, so this event gives the community the option of taking in one or more of the

area’s fireworks displays and paying tribute to our great country, regardless of the date on the calendar.

In addition to fireworks downtown, there are a number of other fun events taking place all over town on Saturday. Center City’s Amarillo Community

Market that happens every Saturday through October 6th (typically on the Chamber grounds) will move slightly north to 6th & Polk this weekend from

9am—1pm. Shop for homemade and home-grown items, crafts, gifts and more. Get more info at www.amarillocommunitymarket.com.

Or stroll down Historic Route 66 on 6th Avenue between Georgia and

Western from 10am—4pm Saturday to shop, dine, antique, or check out the car show and more for their Route 66 Festival. Details can be found at

www.amarillo66.com.

Finish up the day downtown from 4pm—1030pm for the big Route 66 Cele-bration. There will be music on 2 stages. Local DJ Tommy the Hacker will take the Happy State Bank Stage at

6th & Taylor at 4pm. The Amarillo National Bank Stage at 6th & Polk will feature live music from the Dust Jack-ets at 5pm, Andy Chase at 610pm, Rock Bottom at 720pm, and Insufficient Funds at 830pm. Weather permit-

ting, a spectacular fireworks display over downtown will happen around 945pm. There is no admission cost to the downtown event, so come take in some great music and entertainment for FREE!

Don’t forget your wallet and appetite to check out Food Truck Alley along 7th between Taylor & Fillmore or the

Joe’s Hospitality Center on Taylor between 5th & 6th for your choice of food and drinks from more than 18 ven-

dors. And of course there are great local Chamber member restaurants and clubs downtown too including Moon-doggy’s Pizza & Pub, Six Car Pub & Brewery, Crush Wine Bar & Grill, and Esquire Jazz Club who is waiving their

cover charge on Saturday.

Special thanks to our presenting sponsors Amarillo National Bank and Happy State Bank, as well as Amarillo Globe-News, Street Toyota, Xcel Energy, United Supermarkets, Center City of

Amarillo, the City of Amarillo, and KGNC FM who will broadcast the music to go along with the fireworks display on 97.9. For more information, visit our web-

Travel Writers Drum Up Publicity By: Eric Miller, CVC Director of Communications—[email protected]

Fifty members of the Society of American Travel Writers Central States Chapter visited Amarillo at the end of May and the begin-

ning of June to get a first-hand look at our city. Thirty of these journalists from around the Midwest, South, Southwest and West-ern U.S. are writers, bloggers, photographers, influencers and whatever other description is used in the communications world to-

day. They publish and broadcast their work across the country, and their work is often seen by audiences around the world.

During the four-day meeting the group hit many of the highlights of Amarillo as well as some of the lesser known aspects of our

city. The bottom line, a group of top notch communicators developed a great impression of Amarillo and the Panhandle.

The city is already seeing results and they should continue for months to come.

Chapter president Mike Hiller posted on his Facebook page, “Winding up an unexpectedly cool trip to Amarillo with a ranch hand

rodeo and longhorn cattle roundup. The city is full of warm, gen-erous Texans and surprises around every corner.”

Tom Adkinson of Knoxville, Tennessee placed this photo and

cutline about Wildcat Bluff- http://knoxvilledailysun.com/

travel/2018/wildcat-bluff-trail-amarillo.html.

Elaine Warner of Oklahoma filed a story with her hometown Ed-mund Sun that has already been re-printed in the Enid News-

canyon/article_80ae77c0-70cf-11e8-9f7a-3f23f23ae98f.html.

David Pendergrass has once again captured a beautiful shot of the recent Cattle Drive through downtown. His entry had great photo composition with the historic Potter County Court House in the back-ground along side of the more modern architecture of the Amarillo National Bank buildings. This photo won Perdergrass a $500 prize this year. He officially holds the title two years in a row of having the best of the hundreds of photo entries.

Updated OSHA Standards: The latest information.

Training Safety Essentials: Recognize & Control Hazardous conditions.

Behavior-Based Safety: How it affects your business and the bottom line.

Are you ready for the New Silica Standard? Did you know that OSHA’s new Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) standard

adds to your Hazard Communication training requirements?

Protecting your workers from serious injuries and illnesses along with keeping your company in compliance with OSHA’s complex and often confusing standards can have serious consequences. If safety management works, then everybody wins.

Enforcement for the new RCS standards for General Industry and Maritime went into effect on June 23, 2018. The new rule significantly reduces the amount of silica dust that workers can be exposed to in the workplace. The new permissible exposure limit (PEL) for RCS is 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air, averaged over an 8-hour shift. The new standard also requires that OSHA’s existing HazCom Standard (HCS) training requirements be adhered to as well as new items related to RCS hazards and exposure.

Thomas Safety Solutions, Inc. (TSSI) would like to invite you to come and learn about the new Crystalline Silica standards. TSSI will be hosting the event at Amarillo College campus on Polk Street. This session will discuss the permissible exposure limit (PEL), exposure assessment, exposure control plan, training requirements, compliance dates and resources.

Thomas Safety Solutions, Inc., a safety consulting firm, will be conducting the Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard Seminar in the Amarillo, TX area.

Mr. Thomas specializes in bringing safety and health solutions to thousands of workers across the country. His education in safety and health, invaluable experience, along with his technical expertise, makes him an exceptional choice to lead this seminar.

Mr. Thomas has helped businesses, throughout the country, achieve safety excellence and reduce the number of workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. His training seminars are comprehensive, interactive, and will provide you with helpful information to help your company achieve its safety objectives.

Summer Celebration Big Success

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported, participated or volunteered for the Summer Celebration last week. We had a great crowd, wonderful weather, awesome food and drinks, and music that you were sad to have end. Check out these photos and a whole lot more to see if we spotted you or someone you know. View, print or download them from our Flickr album at http://bit.ly/SummerCelebration2018Pics.

We recently interviewed some great Chamber members about their organizations in our Facebook “Meet the Member” live videos. This is a great way to learn more about the people behind the companies or non-profit or-ganizations that are part of our community. You can click on the names in blue below and be taken directly to their video link on our Facebook page. Thank you to these members for talking with us recently: William Ware, Six Car Pub & Brewery / Crush; Cathy Schick, Downtown Tower Executive Office Suites; Laura Stepp, Healthy Stepp Massage Therapy Studio; Mark & Kathy Crawford, Waxing the City; John Johnson, Country Pre-Owned of Amarillo; and Beth Duke, Center City of Amarillo. If you want to see other videos like Chamber Minute re-caps or videos from other events, check out the “Video” tab of our Chamber Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pg/AmarilloChamber/videos/. Editor’s Corner By: Penni Bentley, Senior Communications Director Direct: 806.342.2005 Cell: 806.674.7334 [email protected] This is typically the last paragraph I close this editor’s corner with every month… “As always, tell us how we are doing. Give us your suggestions, feedback, and input. Feel free to write on our Facebook wall.”

I will say, that the last couple of weeks have been interesting with the people wanting to

reach out and give the Chamber their feedback. They have called. They have written on our Facebook wall. They have sent mes-sages. Unfortunately, most of these recent instances have been to give feedback on things we have no control over or had no part of simply because they do not understand what the Chamber of Commerce does. I guess it should be flattering that they think the Chamber of Commerce does so much. For instance, they think we have control over what signage gets put up in town by a private citizen, or worse think we agree with the sentiment. They think that we are anti-American because there are fire-works being celebrated on a day other than July 4th. Some think we con-trol what parades happen in town and what the costs should be. It has been a challenge to find the politically correct and appropriate response to many of these messages that doesn’t add more fuel to whatever the fire is. But if you are on social media for your business, you know that you can’t just ignore those responses, because that seems to make them only more persistent in spreading messages of negativity. (Note, I don’t think any of these comments came from you...our wonderful members! So, thank you!) I love my job. I love the Chamber. I love the Amarillo community and its people. I take so much of the negative comments personally even though I shouldn’t. These are things that are out of our control, yet hurt our city and reflect poorly on us to outsiders. The keyboard warriors can be vi-cious. Our standard response to most of these comments is one that stress our goal to work on behalf of all of the businesses in our community and pro-mote Amarillo is a great place to live, learn, work, and play. We try to be proactive and supportive of the leaders in our community that are doing their best to make our city great. And we know that the system isn’t per-fect, but we strive to be positive and always have our members’ and our community’s best interest at heart. And sometimes that’s all we can do. Social media can be a great tool for reaching your customers or prospec-tive clients to spread your message. It seems so many in our society have lost sight of that and use social media to spread ugliness or attack people. So my challenge to you, is to think before you post, share kindness, and be positive. And when someone lashes out, I try to remind myself to take the high road...there’s less traffic up there. The Chamber’s Convention & Visitor Council staff should be commended

for their efforts to make lemonade out of lemons. Dan “the man” Quandt took the high road by see-ing that a great billboard was put up outside of town to be a positive message to our city’s visitors. We think it’s awesome! Today I’ll just close with this. Get involved. We are proud to be YOUR Chamber.
