SCOOP THE POOP! Be Part of the Solution, Not Part of the Problem.

Scoop your pet’s waste no matter where you are: ● Community Parks ● Streets ● Sidewalks ● Your Yard

Yes, we’re talking about the inconsiderate pet owners who do not clean up after their pets do their “business,” leaving an unpleasant mess for someone to step in. Remember to take along a suitable device for the collection of animal waste. Waste stations have been placed at The Anchorage Trail, Wagner Park, and City Hall grounds for your convenience when out walking your pets. Please use them.

BELLEWOOD FARMERS’ MARKET The youth from Bellewood Home for Children are selling vegetables, flowers, and herbs from their garden at a roadside stand on the Uspiritus Bellewood campus. A sign will be posted on the days produce is available for sale. Vegetables this summer will include tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, zucchini, and peppers. Your support is appreciated.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ANCHORAGE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE■ Prepare an Effective Evacuation PlanIn the event of a sudden emergency, you may have just minutes to gather your family and important papers, and get out of your home, possibly for good. Are you prepared? Where would you go? What would you take with you?

■ Take the Ten-Minute ChallengeTo find out if you are ready, do a real-time test. Give yourself just 10 minutes to get your family and belongings to the car and on the road to safety. The Insurance Information Institute has prepared an excellent, three minute video to help. You can view the video online at:www2.iii.org/video/evacuation-the-10-minute-challenge.html

With preparation and practice, you stand the best chance of getting out with what you and your family need, and ending up in the right place with a minimum of stress and confusion.

■ Include Your Pets in Evacuation/Disaster PlanningSince most shelters exclude pets, it’s essential that you plan ahead so that if you must evacuate you won’t be forced to leave your animals behind. After many disasters, thousands of pets are left to fend for themselves and end up lost, injured, or killed. The same website (www.iii.org)helps you plan for your pets as well.

CAN EMERGENCY RESPONDERS FIND YOU?Are your house numbers clearly displayed street side so that fire, EMS, and police can quickly locate your home in case of an emergency? Are your house numbers faded or missing altogether? Emergency responders need to find you fast! Your life depends on it.

RAIL SAFETY FUNDAMENTALSMost people are surprised to hear that in America, a person or vehicle is hit by a train every three hours. Cities have grown so much that the railroad tracks, once located on the outskirts of towns, are now right in the middle of residential neighborhoods which can create dangerous situations. Learn about staying safe when it comes to trains.

► Trains don’t travel at fixed times. Always expect a train at each highway-rail intersection.► All train tracks are private property. Never walk near or play on tracks; it’s illegal trespass and highly dangerous. By the time a locomotive sees a trespasser or vehicle on the tracks it’s too late. The average train passing though Anchorage is 6,000 feet long and takes a mile to stop!► A train can extend three feet or more beyond the steel rail, putting the safety zone for pedestrians well beyond the three-foot mark.► Trains can move in either direction at any time. Sometimes cars are pushed by locomotives instead of being pulled.► Trains are quieter than ever, producing no telltale “clackety-clack.” Any approaching train is always closer, and moving faster, than you think.► Stay alert! No texting, headphones, or other distractions that would prevent you from hearing an approaching train. Never mix rails and recreation.
