The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company is an American tire company founded by Harvey Samuel Firestone in 1900 to supply pneumatic tires for wagons, buggies, and other forms of wheeled transportation common in the era. Recognizing the intro-duction of the automobile at the turn of the century as an opportunity for marketing tires for automobiles, Firestone pioneered the mass production of the rubber tire. As an industry leader in the tire replacement market, Harvey Firestone was also tapped by Henry Ford as the original equipment supplier of Ford Motor Company automobiles, a partnership that continued for several decades.

Bridgestone Americas’ corporate family traces its roots to two distinguished com-panies— The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, which Harvey Firestone formed in Akron, Ohio in August 1900, and the Bridgestone Tire Company Ltd., which Sho-jiro Ishibashi started in Japan in 1931. Bridgestone Corporation purchased Fires-tone in 1988 for $2.6 billion, transforming the companies’ combined operations into the world’s largest tire and rubber company. The operations in the Americas were renamed Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. and became the largest subsidiary of Bridge-stone. As part of its integration with Bridgestone’s existing U.S. operations, Bridge-stone/Firestone moved its headquarters from Akron to Nashville in 1992.
