President’s Message

2010 is starting off like a rocket. It is already February. Freestyle Fun! The freestyle class is having fun learning new moves and creating new sequences to use in routines. Our group routine looks so great we are planning to video tape it and put it on YouTube. The class did a Holiday show at Friendship Village in Schaumburg this past December; the residents really enjoyed watching the dogs perform. We are planning to do more performances for retirement homes and fundraisers this coming spring and summer. There will be two sessions of Canine Freestyle offered the next session on Wednesday mornings. The Beginning class will begin at 10:00 am and the Intermediate class will begin at 11:15 am. Any dog that loves to learn new things will enjoy these classes. The focus of the class is to teach new behaviors in a fun and easy way. The dogs have so much fun they can’t wait to learn new things. Many of these behaviors are also useful for Obedience, Rally and Agility. I am looking forward to seeing some of you the next session. Cheryle Homuth CPDT

A very special way to say Thank You!

The NOCI awards program At its annual awards banquet, NOCI recognizes titles and major awards won by its members by giving each handler/dog team a plaque listing its accomplishments. Each year the plaque is updated to reflect new accomplishments. As written in the club bylaws, this is what you must do to be eligible for a plaque.

1." Submit a written record of your accomplishment on a NOCI score report form. Score reports should be placed in the “Woof Box” in the club office, mailed to the awards chairperson (currently Judy Gemperline) or submitted online at tinyurl.com/nociscore. Score reports MUST be submitted by December 31 of the year in which the title was earned. If you do not meet the deadline, the club will not pay for the engraving / plaque.

2." Provide one service to the club during the calendar year. Fill out the service form so we have a record. 3." Attend at least one general membership meeting during the calendar year.

Be sure to sign the attendance sheet whenever you attend a meeting. Due to the increasing number and expense of these awards, the club will be adhering to these guidelines very strictly.

Tails from the Southwest By: Lora Seale

Welcome into the New Year y'all! As we begin the New Year, I would like to look back once again over the past year. As mentioned before, it was filled with the thrills of victories and the agonies of defeat. We as a Club and as individual members each had our ups and downs. One of the best things I have noted about our members is the staggering amount of combined knowledge and experience and the willingness to share that with other members. If you are fortunate enough to be on the NOCI e-mail Yahoo group, you will have seen over time how if one person has a question about a training issue, health issue, or where to get what, there always seems to be another member or bunches of members who have experienced something very similar or know someone else who has. Where to get something? How to do something? What do we do for? Wow – once again the experience is astounding. The two agility clubs I am associated with here in the Dallas area are the same. Need a plumber who knows how to get the dog hair out of the drain? Sixteen people know plumbers, numbers, and references. Read a good book on dogs or training? Share the experience and your opinion, good or bad. Then come training issues. I swear there are, and always have been, as many ways to train a dog as there are breeds of dogs recognized by the AKC. As we have come to learn over the years and through either generations of, different breeds of, different types of (etcetera) dogs – there is no way to utilize the same method of training with all dogs. And once again – membership comes to the rescue with vast knowledge and experience. I have been very fortunate for the past 11 days to have Diane Propst and her husband and dogs visiting with me. She reminds me this evening that when you get into the sport of obedience, as we did many years ago, you don't just gain the sport of obedience, but you gain lifelong friends… Back in the dark ages, like around 1973, there was a terrible gas crunch. Bonnie Barry and I were both living in Cary and we were both in our first-ever obedience class in McHenry with Julie Cepulis, our instructor and mentor. Came time for our class graduation (do we still do those?) and Julie contacted Diane Propst to judge it for our group. Since we had such a terrible gas crunch, Bonnie and I were already carpooling it from Cary to McHenry once a week (our classes were held in the old roller rink there). As mentioned, Julie had invited Diane to judge, and asked if Bonnie and I could bring her that evening. I contacted "Mrs. Propst", who was already a real live, official, licensed obedience judge, to get directions to her home. After several minutes of detailed instruction, it was discovered that we lived all of three blocks from each other and since they were short country blocks (as opposed to the long ones), we could easily walk from one home to the other. We still laugh about that. In any case, I picked up Diane, we went and picked up Bonnie, and off to McHenry we went. And that, my friends, was the start of our incredible 30+ year (to date) friendship. We were invincible and truly best friends and still are – with the exception that we lost Bonnie along the way. As with all our very wonderful friends, be they human or canine, they live in our hearts forever… as this friendship always will. We have such great stories of judging matches together in the Chicago area and up into Wisconsin. We traveled together for many years – the three of us and our dogs in a Toyota pickup truck. If you remember these from the 1980s, they were rather small and had no jump seat. Duz, Bonnie's first Border Collie, would be loose in the back of the truck, closed in by cap, and would "herd" passing cars for the entire trip, wherever that particular one might be to/from. Of course, we were a lot younger then and had a lot less 'baggage' to carry around on our hips, thighs, etc. – and let's not go there! We had "pacts" about who was driving when, who got the bed closest to the bathroom, and who had to sit in the middle. Keep in mind, we didn't have seatbelts in our vehicles back then and could sit three-across almost comfortably. Ah – those were the fun days of travel and showing in obedience, back when the classes were full and showing was an entire day. During Diane's stay this trip we have managed to get in two weekends of agility trials. Last weekend was the Lone Star Poodle Club trial. Who better to compete than Dancer, her son Tango, and Topper. We had quite a bit of success then and again this weekend for the Texas Kennel Club trials. As you all know, we hold most of our trials in exhibition barns. These were here in McKinney, four miles from my house, so why not? Except the place is not heated and both mornings started at 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Brrrrr. While not quite Chicago, it was colder than we cared to be. The dogs LOVED it and ran great. There is nothing like trying to run a fast dog while dressed up like the Michelin Man – Diane says at least it wouldn't have hurt had we fallen. I shall hold off telling you the really fun part of last weekend for my next column. The only hint I can give is that it should probably be saved for Halloween … kinda spooky! Until next time. Qs to y'all! Lora (Cunningham) Seale and Friends
