Greetings! I’m very pleased to share with you that the Washington Fire Commissioners Association awarded Fire District 8’s leadership and management team 1st place in Washington State for Management Excellence during their recent conference in Yakima!

Generator Safety TipsDowned utility lines, power blackouts, or heavy snow-falls can all lead to power outages. Many people turn to a portable generator for a temporary solution without knowing the risks.

1. Make sure appliances are plugged directly into the generator or a heavy- duty outdoor-rated extension cord. Check cords for cuts and tears, and be sure the plug has all three prongs, especially a grounding pin.

2. If you must connect the generator to house wiring to power appliances, have a qual-ified electrician install a properly rated transfer switch in accordance with the National Electrical Code® (NEC) and state and local electrical codes.

3. Store fuel for the genera-tor in a correctly labeled container intended for the purpose. Store containers outside of living areas.

4. Generators should be used in well-ventilated locations outside away from all doors, windows and vent openings.

Spokane County Fire District 8 competed against fire depart-ments with budgets greater than $4,000,000 and received 1st place in the state of Washington. The Management Excellence Award is based on multiple criteria including:

• Governance• Administrative

and operational management

• Public services• Public education• Financial management• Leadership

An independent selection committee reviews and compares the criteria to other similarly sized organizations in Washington State and selects the winner.

The purpose of the Management Excellence Award Program is:• To provide a means of sharing information, innovative

ideas and the variety of activities taking place throughout the state of Washington

• To give recognition to those in the fire service that have demonstrated progressive achievement

• To benefit all fire districts and regional fire authorities, regardless of size, location, budget, or number of personnel.

We are very humbled and honored to have been chosen for this award.
