Water, with its extinguishing/control capability, has been a back-bone of the fire fighting industry. In recent years since the MontrealProtocol and the phase-out of halons, there has been substantial reap-praisal of the approaches to fireprotection, including water systems.
Water, the most natural ofsubstances, has taken on a newform as a highly efficient ultra finespray...called Water Mist. As a resultof extensive research and develop-ment,Water Mist has been demon-strated to be a suitable Halon 1301replacement for many commercialand industrial applications.
Chemetron Water Mist systemsare the most environmentally-friendly fire protection systems. We have completed fire testing of Water Mist systems for the protection of gas turbines and high risk machinery spaces andcontinue to develop new applica-tions for our systems.

New Technology From A Proven Leader
Chemetron Fire Systems is at the fore-front of new water mist fire suppressiontechnology. As the world experiencestremendous advancements in nearlyevery field of endeavor, Chemetron FireSystems is committed to developing ahazard specific solution to meet theprotection needs of high risk facilities. In accordance with NFPA 750, our newWater Mist system offers these out-standing benefits: • Environmentally acceptable• Non-toxic• Highly efficient fire suppression capability• Suitable for a wide range of applications • Minimal space and weight
requirements • Skid assembly simplifies installation
and service• Optional cold weather package
People Safe. Environmentally Compatible.
Chemetron Water Mist systems providesafe fire protection for occupied spacesand critical assets; they also make goodeconomic sense – it's the natural solution.Safe, non-toxic and environmentallyacceptable, water mist extinguishes fireby cooling the flames and displacing theoxygen. Water Mist has been recognizedby the U.S. EPA as an efficient, non-ozonedepleting alternative agent.
What Is Water Mist Technology?
A Water Mist system is a means of fireprotection utilizing a very fine waterspray. Water is an outstanding physically-acting agent as a result of its exceptionallyhigh heat absorbing capacity and latentheat of vaporization. Water Mist worksto quench fire and hold damage to aminimum. It is a clean agent suitable fora range of sensitive applications andwhere people are involved.
The Chemetron Water Mist system isdesigned to extinguish fires in varioushazards using a limited quantity of water,as compared to standard sprinkler systems. The water is discharged through specifi-cally engineered nozzles that create avery fine droplet size.
Water Mist achieves fire extinguishmentthrough a number of processes:• Flame quenching by cooling of burning
materials and potential fuel sources to below auto-ignition temperatures.
• Inerting as a result of vapor production, which excludes oxygen from the flamefront. This generation of vapor dilutesthe oxygen percentage in the air andcombats the fire.
• Blocking radiative heat between the fire and adjoining combustibles, thus slowing down propagation of the fire.
Water Mist technology also has thepotential to dilute flammable vapors withwater vapor, making the mixture too leanto burn.
Reliability
It is the most demanding word for amanufacturer of fire protection systems. At Chemetron Fire Systems, reliabilitymeans that we have proven systems toprotect your operation 24 hours aday...day after day.
Use of water as a fine mist from aChemetron stand-alone system will provideefficient and reliable fire protection that:• Requires less water than traditional
sprinkler and deluge and spray systems• Offers the ability to scrub the sur-
rounding air, removing airborne smoke particulates
• Absorption of water soluble toxic, irritant gases, and decomposition particles created by the fire.

With a Chemetron Water Mist systemyou are assured of fast, efficient andenvironmentally safe fire protection.
Worldwide Applications
Chemetron Fire Systems, with a single-source responsibility for fire suppressionand support, continues to invest andrenew research and development tomeet changing requirements in industryaround the globe.
Oil and Gas Industry: Process plants, production modules, gas turbines, indoor transformers, other rotatingmachinery, gantry protection, flaresnuffing, spray curtains.
Power Generation: Gas and steamturbines, generator sets, fuel handlingunits, transformers, oilers, switch gearrooms.
Manufacturing: Process pumps andmixers, spray booths, welding areas, bulk conveyors, automotive industryand engine test cells, liquid hydrocarbonand flammable chemical storage.
Shipboard and Marine: Machinerooms, bilges and escape corridors.
Industrial: Flammable liquids andflare snuffing.
System Features
The Chemetron Water Mist system ismanufactured with maximum designfeatures:• Manual and automatic operation • Hazard specific discharge timing
sequences
• Low level water alarm annunciation • Low nitrogen pressure annunciation • H20 and N2 refill capabilities • 45, 70 and 100 gallon water
capacity tanks • Custom capacity tanks available• Both corrosion resistant and stain-
less steel tanks available• Tank trim and accessories can be
stainless steel and/or bronze• Uniquely designed nozzles with
optimum droplet size, flow rates and spray coverage
• Nozzles have no moving parts for minimal maintenance and maxi-mum reliability
• 100 - 120 micron mean droplet size • Single fluid atomization • 350 psi (24 bar) operating nozzle
pressure• Strainers are provided in the main
discharge piping• The CFS nozzles (turbine nozzles)
incorporate individual nozzle strainers
• High precision manufacturing and integral quality control procedures
• Dry piping network to avoid freezing • Multiple hazards may be protected
from a common water supply by using pneumatically operated directional (selector) valves. This is essentially an economy measuredesigned to reduce system size and is to be used only when there is assurance that only one hazard could require a discharge at any one time.
The Chemetron Water Mist systemfunctions as a stand alone modularextinguishing package with: watertank, nitrogen cylinders, valves, gauges, and control panel. Optionalsystem features include:• Cold weather package• Explosion-proof controls• Custom control panels

Water Supply And System Piping
To maintain system integrity, NFPA750 states:• The water supply for a water mist
system shall be taken from a source that is equivalent in qualityto a potable source with respectto particulate and dissolved solids, or from a source of naturalseawater.
• To minimize corrosion, all system piping shall be stainless steel or copper.
The Chemetron Integrated System
Chemetron Water Mist FireSuppression systems work hand-in-hand with state-of-the art controland detection components to identifyand extinguish fires. Our integratedsystems consist of four basic compon-ents and associated accessories:
• Storage and valve componentsConsist of water tank, nitrogen
cylinders, valve assemblies, piping, and discharge nozzles.
• Control PanelThe panel is the brains of the
system and is used to monitor thedetection and accessories.
• Detection, alarm devices, and accessories
These external devices act as theeyes and voice of the system as theygive audible or visual signals.
• TrimThis system component consists of
warning signs, hoses, connectionfittings, pressure gauge, solenoidvalve, and the actuator requiredto manually operate the cylindervalve. There are three typesof actuation: automatic, manual, and remoteelectric manual.
Enclosure Design Considerations
Chemetron has been very successfulin extinguishing fires in hazardenclosures with both natural and/orforced ventilation. However, NFPA750 and good fire protection practicesrequire that all doors and openingsbe automatically closed and forcedventilation systems shut down uponfire detection.
How Does Water Mist Differ FromA Sprinkler System?
Water is the only element that aWater Mist system has in commonwith an automatic sprinkler system. The design technology involved issignificantly different.
The design of sprinkler systems andNFPA 15 type spray systems is basedon providing a specific water densityover designated surface areas tosuppress a fire, primarily by heatreduction. Water Mist system designtakes into consideration both thevolume and the probable firedynamics of the hazard to determinethe number of nozzles and nozzleflow rates.
When compared to the waterdemand required for sprinkler systems, the amount of water used for aWater Mist system is significantly less.
The Chemetron Difference
