Collectabouteighthandfulsofwood.Makesureyougetsomedifferent-

sizedpieces.

Havealookthroughthewoodyou’vecollected,andtakeoutanybitsyou

thinkwon’tburn.

Sortthewoodintofourpilesaccordingtosize.Agoodguideis:

Haveathinkaboutwhatsizewoodwillbebesttostartyourfire.Agood

trickistoimagineyou’reholdingamatchtoeachpiece:whichmightburn?CheckouttheToptipboxforhelp,ifyouneedit.

Whenyou’vesortedyourwood,crumpleupsomenewspapertoput

atthebaseofyourfire.Thenstartbuildingaroundit,usingthesmalleststicksfirst.Don’tputtoomuchontostartwith.Youcanusethepicturesonthefrontofthiscardtohelpyou.

Ready?Whenyourfire’sgoodtogo,yourleaderwilllightitforyou.Once

it’sburning,makesureyou’reallwellawayfromthefireincaseanysparksjumpout.Keepaneyeonit,andifyouthinkitneedsmorewoodaskyourleadertohelpyouputiton.

Ifyourfiredoesn’tseemlikeitwantstocatchlightproperly,youcangently

fanitusingaplasticplateorastripofcardboard–extraairoftenhelps.

Whenyou’rereadytoputoutyourfire,pouryourbucketofwater,earthor

sandoverit.Waitforittocooldown.Yourleaderswilltellyouhowtoclearupanyashorpartlyburntwood.Whenyou’vefinished,makesureyouleavetheareaasyoufoundit.
