WHAT IS A FIRE PUMP?Fire pumps are used to supply high pressure water flow to fire sprinkler safety systems. These systems are typically found in high-rise buildings, storage warehouses, or any area where the local municipal water system is not able to provide sufficient water pressure to the fire sprinkler system to be approved by a third-party testing agency like the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) to ensure that they will perform as expected. While fire pumps are typically electrically powered, they will also feature a backup power source, such as a diesel or gas engine, so that they will function during a power outage.
Due to the high temperatures generated by these engines, fire pump systems often require insulation blankets to cover the engine’s hot exhaust components, to protect personnel and
maintain a comfortable ambient heat in the area surrounding the fire pump system.

UL LISTEDUnderwriters Laboratories is an independent body that inspects and certifies an expansive range of products by subjecting them to a comprehensive series of safety tests.
UL handles a wide variety of standards for industrial and construction equipment, so it’s important to know which standards apply to fire safety equipment. UL 2200 standard is the most applicable, as it lists the requirements for stationary engine generator assemblies.
