GUIDELINES FOR PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

BS: 5306 Part 3: 1985

1. Each floor must have at least 2 extinguishers. [Clause 5.2] 2. Total Class A Rating should be minimum 26A for open area (13A X 02= 26 A) 3. Class A rating should be 0.007 X Area in sq feet. { 2nd Edn A = 0.17XAREA Sq ft} [Clause 5.2] 4. Additional extinguisher should be provided for Areas prone to ordinary or special hazard.

[Clause 5.2] 5. Each room or area should be considered separately {B RATING=.018X Area Sq ft} 6. Fire risk for more than 65 liter fuel/chemical should be considered separately. [Clause 5.3.2] 7. Area of liquid that can be extinguished, Refer to the below chart [Clause 5.3.1]

8. A single FE capable of fighting both Class A & B, preferred over 2 different FEs, [Clause 5.4] 9. FEs should be placed in such a way that one need not travel more than 100 ft to reach a FEs.

B. Ordinary Hazard – 2 FE of total 26A rating Up to 650 Sq ft.

C. High Hazard – In addition to point B (ordinary hazard) additional 2 FEs of total 42A rating (2X5 Kg FE) for every 500 Sq ft.

3. Closed Area A. Low Hazard – 2 FEs total of 26A rating (2X2Kg FE) /Room /Floor of the building. B. Ordinary Hazard – 4 FEs totaling 52A rating (4X2 Kg FE) per room/Floor of the building. C. High Hazard – In addition to point B (ordinary hazard) additional 2 FEs of total 42A rating

(2X5 Kg FE) for every 500 Sq ft. D. Special Hazard – 2 FEs totaling 16A (2X1Kg FE) per room/ Floor of the building.

A. Low Hazard- 1 FE of 13B rating (1X1Kg FE) Up to 650 Sq ft.

B. Ordinary Hazard – 2 FE of total 68B rating Up to 650 Sq ft.

2Closed Area

A. Low Hazard – 2 FEs total of 26B rating (2X2Kg FE) /Room /Floor of the building.

B. Ordinary Hazard – 4 FEs totaling 136B rating (4X2 Kg FE) per room/Floor of the building.

Number of pieces can change depending on the specific need but rating should be strictly followed.

These are the minimum requirements which can exceed depending on the specific premise requirement.

Special Guidelines IN IS-2190 : 2005 2nd Revision

1. Mixed occupancy with E class risk add 110 B Rating extinguisher/room/machine 2. Each HT Panels/Servo should have 21A/55B capacity FEs 3. Low+Ordinary+High Hazard - A person should not travel more than 80 ft for FEs or

emergency exit. 4. Special hazard – A person should not travel more than 35 ft for FEs or emergency

exit. 5. Bottom of the FEs should be 3 ft from floor [Clause 6.5] 6. Generally FE should be sighted in such a way that one need not travel more than 50

ft to reach a FE. [Clause 6.3] 7. FEs should be placed as near as possible to exits or staircase landing, or along fire

escape routes. [Clause 6.2]
