Fire Chief’s Message
It is my honor to present the 2017 Bryan Fire Department Annual Report. During 2017, the Bryan Fire Department (BFD) had many accomplishments, which enabled our organization to better serve the citizens of Bryan. One of our biggest goals has been to have a minimum of four (4) firefighters on each fire truck and a Chief’s Aide. With the assistance from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from 2016, we were able to raise minimum staffing levels to four fighters on all fire companies every day.
Throughout 2017, we have watched the new Fire Station 2 under construction. When completed, the new station will greatly enhance our capabilities to serve the public. The station will include additional living space, storage for all supplies, updated technology, and a new office area for the Fire Marshal's Office. The Fire Marshal’s Office also received a grant from the National Rifle Association for equipment and adopted the 2015 National Fire Code.
The Bryan Fire Department interacted with over 9,000 citizens through various public education events and performed over 1800 fire and life safety inspections in 2017. Fire prevention through code enforcement, inspections, and educating our citizens on life safety issues remains a priority for our organization.
In order to provide the highest level of customer service and to ensure the safety of our citizens and BFD personnel, 31,954 individual hours were spent in training last year. These hours were in all subjects related to the services provided by our personnel every day.
This report is only a glimpse of the countless hours the men and women of the Bryan Fire Department provided during 2017. Our employees work diligently and tirelessly around the clock every day of the year to provide services to the citizens of Bryan and its visitors. Our dedicated employees are by far our greatest asset.
The Bryan Fire Department responded to 11,979 incidents during 2017, a record number of calls for emergency assistance. As our service demands increase, the Bryan Fire Department will continue to provide the highest possible level of service to the citizens we serve. While we celebrate many accomplishments, we must recognize that we could not perform our services successfully without the tremendous support of the Bryan City Council, City Manager, and other City departments.
Thank you for your interest in the Bryan Fire Department and I hope you will enjoy the 2017 annual report.

Annual Report
2017
Following the landfall of Hurricane Harvey, BFD deployed 15 members to various Texas strike
force teams to assist in different aspects of rescue to Houston and the coastal bend area of Texas.
We had four members assisting with Texas Task Force 1 & 2 in water and structural rescue, four
members that assisted with the Emergency Medical Task Force (DSHS) providing ambulance
service and seven members assisting with the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS).
We also had two firefighters, Stephen Southerlin and Kevin Valle, who deployed with the Texas
National Guard. In addition, there were quite a few members that self-deployed with their own
resources. We are extremely proud of all of them.
HURRICANE HARVEY
In March of 2017 the Bryan Fire Department was able to successfully contain a fire in the upper
floor that occurred in the venting system of the wood burning stove. The business was up and
running shortly after because of the quick response.
RX PIZZA FIRE
Many upgrades in equipment and personal protective
equipment (PPE) were implemented in 2017 to bolster
our wildland firefighting capabilities.

In late October, the Bryan Fire Department
received a $2,500 grant from ATMOS
Energy to purchase smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors for local residents
with hearing impairments or other
disabilities that serve as a barrier to
having this life saving protection in their
homes. Community business partnerships
like these help support the Bryan Fire
Department’s initiative to educate citizens
on the importance of fire safety and
prevention awareness.

The Italy Fire Department in Italy, Texas
recently completed a new fire station and
dedicated it in remembrance of Lt. Greg
Pickard on May 20th. A few BFD personnel
were there to help honor Lt. Pickard as well.

SHATTERED DREAMSJust before prom, Bryan FD with Bryan Police,
CHI St. Joseph’s EMS, PHI, and Callaway-
Jones Funeral Home performed the Shattered

runs through a DWI scenario with a fatality.
Everyone involved did a great job. We hope
this made an impact on the students and that
they’ll remember it for years to come.

the BFD new employee recruit academy
in January. A very big thank you goes out
to Lt. Jimmie Rosier, Apparatus Operator

The National Night Out Kick Off Event took place on Thursday, September 7th in the Bryan Target
parking lot. Many local law enforcement, fire departments, and public safety agencies participated.
It was a great event. Thanks to all who participated and helped to make it a successful event.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
POSTER CONTESTThis year’s theme for the NFPA’s poster contest was
“Don’t wait, check the date! Replace smoke alarms
every 10 years”. Pictured are the winners from the
local Bryan elementary schools at each grade level
who were honored in a City Council meeting.
On April 17th, the residents of Watercrest wanted to publicly thank Station 3 for all they have done
for them. They invited Station 3, Chief McGregor, and Chief Ondrasek to a short ceremony to
present Station 3 with a poster signed by the residents. Their gesture was extremely kind and we
are so thankful for their appreciation.
