KOM-Teatteri

THREE SISTERSWritten by Anton ChekhovDirected by Lauri Maijala

One works too hard, another not at all, and the third is daydreaming about being a horse – somewhat hung over, but still. They don’t know what is the price for a liter of milk but wake up at noon and spend two hours getting dressed. They dance on tables, speak in languages and live like there’s no tomorrow – Or, as if they didn’t have to deal with any tedious duties, in the least. And ooh, they are filled to the brim with desperate longing for better days that used to be: Better days somewhere where everything was less complicated; somewhere where life was always beautiful – Moscow! Moscow! But of course: They are Olga, Maša and Irina; Anton Chekhov’s three sisters. However, Lauri Maijala and the KOM-teatteri ‘s rollicking cast swirl them direct-ly into the core of today’s frustrations and disappointments.

THESE LITTLE TOWN BLUES ARE MELTING AWAY

A small seaside town: Wide landscape, ordinary people in their homes shab-bied by life. We get to know them in their everyday duties, we learn about their modest dreams and simple joys, as well as their very contemporary worries from burn-out to marginalization.

The characters are developed tenderly and with respect. The spectator wants to be there amongst them even when an environmental catastrophe hits and causes the water to rise threateningly, and the village community is forced to make life-turning decisions. An essential part of the narrative and staging is a series of videos, which reflects on both the people and the landscape.

Pipsa Lonka’s text won the New Baltic Drama playwriting competition in 2011. It received praise particularly for its warmth and humor.

Suomen Kansallisteatteri

PATRIARCH Written and Directed by Juha Jokela

The award-winning, widely recognized Juha Jokela aims high and hits the mark both as the writer and the director of the Finnish National Theatre’s 140th Jubilee production Patriarch. With his ingenious dialogue and narration, Jokela composes a dense family drama about the gap between genders and generations. He then lets it unfold before us like a panorama seen from the window of a train.

Patriarch is sharp and discerning but never attempts to make claims, place blame or categorize. Replete with nuances and paradoxes the play is deeply reflective of our time and society.

Karttunen Kollektiv

JEMINA - ACT AS YOU’D KNOW HERChoreographed and Performed by Jyrki KarttunenCharacter Direction by Heidi Räisänen

The award-winning dancer and choreographer, newly appointed director of Helsinki Dance Company Jyrki Karttunen “updates the best traditions of dance, theatre, stand up and performance art” in a way that was worthy of win-ning the Vuoden teatteriteko award this year. “Intelligent, wacky and carnal”, the jury statement says.

Karttunen’s bold diva Jemina, who bounces from one character to another and one extreme to the other, generates collisions between man and woman, grown-up and child, real and fake, glamorous and commonplace. Tuomas Fränti’s live music perfectly accompanies images of familiar situations and our surrounding reality.

A rich feast of masterly language of movement, comedy and insight which captivates the audience.

The performance is not recommended for children under 15.

Teater 90°

EDEN Based on Mark Twain’s Short StoriesArtistic Director Aleksis Meaney

It is quite impossible to describe any work of Mark Twain as somber, but the two short stories Teater 90° uses as a springboard for its exhilarating and buoy-ant analysis of love are perhaps the most subjective. Mark Twain wrote Eve’s Diary and Extracts from Adam’s Diary after the death of his wife; perhaps as love letters for her. Now these letters are re-written by a new generation which has learned their alphabet of love from the Music Television. The musically talented actors positively flourish in front of their audience as they frolic through the entire history of evolution from amebas and cavemen to the wonderful realm of Eden – and a little beyond.
