Indianola Garden Club News

Join the IBIC Bridge ClubThe IBIC Bridge Club meets every Tuesday at 10:00 to approximately 2:00. This is a sanctioned game by the American Contract Bridge League and the game is directed by Gene Alberts. Partners will be provided and all folks are welcome to join us.

The Indianola Garden Club will have their February meeting on February 18th, at the Clubhouse.  There will be social time at 12:30 PM with the program starting at 1:00 and a business meeting after that.  The guest speaker for February is Jan Bahr of Roadside Nursery.  This will be an introduction to water features.  The hostesses are Brenda Morrow, Justine Jacobsen and Susan Henry. Our January meeting was a joint meeting with the Kingston group, and our guest speaker, Cori Carlton, gave a lively and very informative talk titled Slugs - 101.  Who knew that slugs could be such an entertaining topic.  I think we all learned a lot about slugs that day.   If you have any Garden Club questions, contact Hollace at 297-3250, or Nina at 297-3884.

Current friends and friends I have yet to meet,

As I write this message, Punxsutawney Phil has already decided we should have 6 more weeks of winter. While I cannot speak for the rest of the country, if we have 6 more weeks like these past couple here in the Northwest (Juneuary), I would certainly enjoy them. The view of Mount Rainier last Friday was so beautiful it almost did not look real.

There are advantages to four distinct seasons though and it looks like I may have to travel once again to find

some great skiing this year. As you travel for pleasure or weather I hope you find what you seek and return to Indianola where all are welcome. As always take the time to say hello to your neighbors and continue to build relationships that can survive extremes like global warming or an ice age.

Respectfully,

Dennis KilpatrickIBIC President

John Francis Vaughan, Jr. died on November 29, 2014. Cancer got him. He was born to John Francis Vaughan, Sr. and Bonnie Forhan Vaughan in 1953, who preceded in him death. He is survived by his sister Kathleen Vaughan Foster and brother Brian Vaughan, son Ben Jensen, nieces Bonnielyn and Josie Foster, nephew Sandy Vaughan, grandnieces Oonaugh and Thora Foster-Bill, and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. He was raised in Kenmore, attended Arrowhead Elementary and Kenmore Junior High School, graduated from Inglemoor High School in 1972, where he played basketball and golf. He studied psychology at the University of Washington and graduated from Seattle University in 1977.

John spent most of his youth working in the clubhouse, caddying and playing golf at Inglewood Country Club. He spent his adult life in Indianola, He loved living on the beach, the sunrises, the sunsets, the storms, and once had a pet seagull. He loved spending time with his nieces and grandnieces. He loved the horse races, and collected books, art and baseball cards. He also sold antiques. He will leave a huge void in the Vaughan Foster family.

A service with reception was held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on December 11, 2014 located at 3218 West Barrett Street in Magnolia.

George Joseph Zimmerman, 90, died on January 15, 2015, of natural causes. Throughout his life he was a devoted husband, father, friend and veteran who asked little of the world and yet gave those he loved everything he had.

The third of eight siblings, George was born on April Fool’s Day, 1924, on a farm near Leoville, Kansas to Fred and Margaret Zimmerman. As a youth in Kansas he often spent long days working on the family farm with his father and brothers Ray, Ed, and Fred. He often said that his upbringing in the rural plains of Kansas ingrained in him the virtues of family, hard work, and unwavering optimism in the face of adversity.

His father died when he was 12, leaving George and his brothers to man their 640-acre farm to help their mother raise the family. At the height of the Dust Bowl the family was forced to sell the farm and migrate west, eventually settling in Denver. In November, 1944, George enlisted in the Navy and joined the Second World War. He spent most of his service in the South Pacific, primarily tasked with censoring mail between soldiers and their loved ones back home. After the war he returned to Denver and began a successful career as a manager in the grocery business.

In Denver he met Mary Miller, his loving wife of 64 years. They were married August 2, 1946, and had five children together. Together he and Mary raised their family in Long Beach, CA, and later lived in Las Vegas for many years before settling in the Pacific Northwest—“God’s country,” as George liked to call it. He enjoyed simple pleasures: playing cards with friends, telling stories to his grandkids, and making sure the gang of neighborhood dogs who came to his porch multiple times a day for treats never went hungry. Those who knew him knew well that he didn’t mince words when it came to saying exactly what was on his mind. He was a good, humble man who will be sorely missed.

George was grateful in his final years to be in a quiet place, surrounded by family. It should be noted that through it all he kept up the best head of hair this side of James Dean. Those genes, along with his endearing spirit, wisdom and sharp sense of humor, will continue to trickle down through the generations. He is survived by his sisters Lucille and Mary and brother Fred; children Michael Zimmerman, Marilyn Koivu (Joe), Marlene Zimmerman, and Larry Miller (Regina); grandchildren Jeff Miller, Ronny Miller, Laura Mannon (Ben), Taylor Koivu (Amy), Miles Koivu, Lane Koivu; and numerous great grandchildren. His wife Mary and son Richard Zimmerman preceded him in death. The family would like to thank the hospice team for their care and support: Tanya, Cindy, Jane, Esther, Bob and Jenny. George considered each of you his friend and always looked forward to your company.

George and Mary’s ashes will be joined and scattered in the woods in Indianola, near the yard where they used to sit on the deck and watch the deer.

The first dock planks have been milled by Smyth Lumbermill on Indianola Road. The screws and other fasteners will arrive soon.

Pictured here are Denver and Marianna Smyth with Port Commissioner John Lane. All the 2x6 planks below John’s elbow and behind him are dock planks.

Your Donations Are Becoming Dock Planks!

Thanks to the generosity of our community we are well on our way to new deck boards. As of the end of January we are over $7000.00 in donations. Thank you to each

and every person committed to keeping our dock alive and well. The dock, in 2016, will mark 100 years of service to Indianola and the surrounding communities. We can be very proud of all the care-givers throughout those years who understood the impact this wooden structure has made in Indianola and the surrounding townships. From connecting Indianola, Suquamish, Kingston, Poulsbo and Winslow to Seattle in the beginning to its current use for fishing, swimming and boating, our grand lady has stood tall.

A point of interest: The first 440 deck boards, cut and ready to be installed, were milled from trees grown in Indianola not more than 500 feet from the dock. Thank you to Paul Smyth Lumbermill for milling and storing the boards.

Thank you, Indianola, for your support.Your Port Commissioners.

Minutes of the IBIC Trustees Meeting, Feb. 5, 2015 Trustees Present: Dennis Kilpatrick, Sandra Bauer, Lisa Fitch, Catherine Freeman, Craig Jacobrown, Robert Jones, Kathy Caldwell, Pat Hatchel, Bridget Young, Ryan Duckworth, Emily Reckord, Jackie Wood

I. President Dennis Kilpatrick called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm.

II. The minutes of the December meeting were approved.

III. Committee Reports:• Treasurer – Lisa reported that our total account balance is $114,021. Major expenses in January

included support for the Eagle Scout boathouse project and the purchase of the LCD projector for the clubhouse, as well as $1656 for utilities and sanitation. January income was $7,470 and expenses $5,864. Trustees voted to open a new bank account at Kitsap Bank at the Dec. 2014 meeting. The signers will be: President, Dennis Kilpatrick; Treasurer, Lisa Fitch; Clubhouse Manager, Jackie Wood; Accountant, Maureen O’Rourke.

• Membership –331 members signed up in January- 51 individual, 75 households, 31 sustaining, and 41 sponsoring. $11,310 deposited

• Merchandise – New merchandise will arrive the end of March! We had a gross income of $142 in January. Only one entry so far for the new tee shirt design- deadline is Feb. 28. Madison needs volunteers to help sell on Saturday mornings. Contact her at [email protected]

• Clubhouse Rentals – Jackie reported that January was a slow month, but demand is picking up especially for summer rentals. Contact Jackie at [email protected] for renting our facility.

• Properties –Emily reported that many jobs need to be done! Volunteer work will have to cover lots of bases that we just cannot pay to have done. Emily will create a list of all the jobs- volunteers could take one small project on as theirs and take care of that task. A work party in the spring will be planned. Stay tuned for how you can help. Maple tree cutting and post office striping still on the radar.

• Security- Pat reported that we plan to use deputies at the beginning of the summer. He will write an article for the Breeze asking community members about their concerns about security.

• Website – Robert is open at [email protected] for requests for postings on the web!

IV. Old Business A. Committees policy- Two changes were suggested on this document that describes how IBIC committees will operate. The final wording of the policy will be presented in March for a vote. B Stone Pathway Construction request – Gary and Julia Reynolds presented drawings of a proposed stone pathway between the bark and path area linking IBIC property and Greg Mackie’s home. Craig noted the plan ‘has great aesthetics, is permeable and not adversarial with its use of stones.’ No parking spaces will be lost. A detailed discussion occurred, covering concerns about unforeseen consequences, what would happen should Greg sell his home, and the need for some written agreement. It was moved, seconded, and passed that a letter of agreement between Greg Mackie and the IBIC be drafted by Gary and Julia, stipulating that the pathway be subject to reevaluation by the board every 5 years. After this letter is written, the board will be notified and conduct an email vote on whether or not to allow the project to proceed. C. Off peak pricing structure for clubhouse rentals- MSP that we try new off peak pricing for clubhouse rentals for 6 months to encourage use and make the clubhouse more available for community members. Sundays through Thursday, rates would be half off for full day ($250) and half-day rentals ($125). This would not include Tuesdays, or June, July, and August. A cleaning fee would also be charged.

V. New business A. Kitsap Rowing Association- Mary Ellen Salyan, speaking for the association, requested a waiver for the rental of the clubhouse for their big fundraiser event on Feb. 7. Such a waiver has been granted twice before- MSP.

Page 11: Finishing off 2014 Indianola-Style, Festive & Excitingindianola.club/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/february...Oonaugh and Thora Foster-Bill, and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. He

11

B. Clubhouse Event Management- Jackie led a detailed discussion about the need for IBIC to look at the job of managing the clubhouse, both in the event managing end, and the maintenance end. It is far more than one person can do. As usage grows, these tasks will get more complex. Jackie suggested an idea for consideration that we contract out event management to a company. The benefit of that would be better service on many levels- multiple people available for problem solving, walk throughs for renters, checking on the condition of the clubhouse before events, doing all the paperwork, etc. The cost would be covered by the usage of the clubhouse. A number of comments reflected an agreement that something must be done to help. Concerns included: how much it would really cost, would we run the risk of our 501c3 rating, how much do we want the clubhouse to be used, need for consistency in people doing maintenance in the clubhouse. It was agreed that we need more data on money issues and 501c3 status before proceeding with a plan. C. Trustee Spring Cleaning work day- Kathy noted the storage area under the clubhouse needs a sort and clean. Trustees will do so on April 11 at 9 am. D. Opt in Text List- Dennis proposed that members be given the chance to give their text phone number to receive notices when community events are taking place. Robert will see about getting that set up on the website. VI. Calendar Feb – March 5Feb. 19- Social club, hosted by Lisa Fitch 5 – 7 pmFeb. 21- Paundy Party 7:30 – 10:30 for all ages. Wear white!!b. Indianola Days- Will be August 1, 2015 (lowest tide)

VII. Member comments- Sarah Runnels asked about the mix-up in our bylaws concerning the description of secretary and treasurer duties. We will have to correct that and conduct a vote on it in August.

Meeting adjourned at 9:12. Next IBIC meeting is March 5, 2015. Location TBD*.Respectfully submitted by Kathy Caldwell

*March IBIC Trustees Meeting will be at the home of Sandra Bauer, 10121 NE Shore Dr.
