Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986Pauillac, 1er Cru ClasseDeep garnet-black colour. An incredible arrayof aromas on the nose: blackberry, blackcherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black oliveand loam. The visually stunning Pichon Longueville could

serve as the post-card-image one conjures up

when imaging a chateau in France. A Second

Growth for certain, but given Pichons lofty

neighbors, their competitive juices must be

constantly flowing. An intriguing aspect withmany these older, established estates is how

    rigorously they embrace modernityone

could be forgiven for erroneously assuming

that time has stopped inside the front door.

In Pichons case, it was the first property to

The 1982 is another superb example ofthat. One of the jammiest, most precociousGranges when it was released, it has nevergone through a closed stage and continues todrink beautifully. A full-bodied, opulent Grange,it reveals an inky/purple color to the rim as wellas a beautiful nose of crushed blueberries, blackberries, smoke, toast, roasted herbs, and road tar. This dense, plush, expansive, seamless, seductive 1982 has not changedmuch since I had it nearly a decade ago. R.Parker, 97 pts. 06/093 bottles

    30Chapoutier lErmite Blanc 1999Northern Rhone

This is one of the greatest dry white wines Ihave ever tasted. The 1999 Ermitage lErmiteis a liquid mineral, crystalline expression. Itis the essence of its grape as well as terroir. It may be the greatest expression of terroirI have seen outside of a handful of AlsatianRieslings (Clos Ste. Hune comes to mind). Ithas that transparent character that terroiristestalk more about than actually recognize.Drinking it is like consuming a liquefied stonyconcoction mixed with white flowers, licorice, and honeyed fruits. It is frightfully pure, dense, and well-delineated. As I said last year, Thereis no real fruit character, just glycerin, alcohol, and liquid stones. Thats about it, but, wow, what an expression! Anticipated maturity:

2012-2050. This is for the connoisseur ofrare wines. Along with Gerard and Jean-LouisChave, Chapoutier is producing the finestexpressions of white Hermitage. His singlevineyard cuvees are to die for if you like theseeccentric, idiosyncratic, mammoth dry whites.R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/021 bottle

    31Artadi El Pison 2004Rioja

The 2004 El Pison stands out from its peers. It has a deeper color than the 2007 with asplendid nose that jumps from the glass.Notes of espresso, balsamic, Asian spices, pain grille, mineral, and black cherry leadto a velvety, mouth-filling, deep wine thateffortlessly combines elegance with power. It should easily drink well for another 30-40years. It simply does not get any better. J.Miller for R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/101 bottle

The 2007 Sloan, now in bottle, has livedup to the extraordinary quality it exhibitedfrom barrel. A world-class, perfumed nose ofcharcoal, espresso roast, white chocolate,

black currants, sweet plums, Asian soy anda Grave-like scorched earth aroma soarsfrom the glass of this dense purple-coloredwine. Full-bodied and seamlessly constructedwith a multidimensional mouthfeel as wellas a phenomenal finish, this 2007 carriesconsiderable tannin, but at present it isconcealed by the wines luxurious levels offruit, glycerin and intensity. This spectacular2007 should drink well for 25-30+ years. R.Parker, 100 pts. 120/101 bottle

    $125-200

    39Chateau Montrose 2009St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe

A colossal effort, the 2009 Montroserepresents a hypothetical blend of themonumental duo of 1989 and 1990 combinedwith the phenomenal 2003. With 13.7%alcohol (an all-time high at Montrose), it isa blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29%Merlot and the rest tiny quantities of CabernetFranc and Petit Verdot. Some structure andminerality can be detected in the background, but the overall impression is one of massiveblackberry, black currant and mulberry fruitintermixed with forest floor, damp earth, crushed rocks and a hint of spring flowers.Full-bodied with sweet but abundant tannin,Jean-Bernard Delmas believes this is thegreatest wine he has made during his shorttenure at Montrose since retiring from Haut-Brion. This wine will undoubtedly shut downfor a decade, then unleash its power, gloryand potential perfection. R. Parker, 100 pts.02/123 double magnums (owc)

Performing even better from bottle than itdid from barrel, this appears to be the finestLynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and 1989.According to the chateau, the 2009 has thehighest level of polyphenols ever measuredas well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). Ablend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and therest largely Merlot with touches of CabernetFranc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosityand powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry andblack currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heavinessor fatigue. There is a vivid, hauntinglylong, wave-like and buoying exchange ofchalk and oyster shell, kelp and iodine withluscious citrus against a backdrop of creamy

The nose is an enticing mlange of floraland earth aromas with a dollop of savoury:jasmine, slate, white pepper, freshly bakedbread and marmite. 55Louis Roederer Cristal 2002Champagne

Roederers 2002 Cristal is still in its infant, fresh stage. Subtle notes of pears, flowers, spices, mint, minerals and oak are woveninto a cashmere-like frame of extraordinarygrace and elegance. This beautifully sculptedChampagne possesses notable clarity butwith the additional depth of fruit that ischaracteristic of this vintage. It is a gorgeous,

seductive Cristal of the highest level. In2002, Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40%Chardonnay with 10 grams of dosage. 20%of the wine was fermented in oak. This is Lot:L030351A107809. The 1996 Salon is yet another wine that ismaturing splendidly. Once focused to thepoint of being painfully austere and angular, today the 1996 Salon has begun to softenand fill out. 58Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2003Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe

A modern day version of the 1959 Lafite, the 2003 Lafite Rothschild was bottled inmid-May, 2005 after achieving 12.9% naturalalcohol hardly an astonishing figure given thevintages weather conditions. A combinationof 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot,3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot,it represents a ripe version of the essence

of Lafite-Rothschild. Dense purple-colored,with classic notes of graphite intertwinedwith melted licorice, crme de cassis, smoke, and flowers, it reveals extraordinaryrichness, opulence, power, purity, intensity, and viscosity. Whether this wine will closedown or not is questionable as it is somewhatatypical given its sweetness and softness.Analytically, there are extremely high tannins, which I suspect will assert themselves in thefuture. Production in 2003 was less than halfof normal. R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/066 bottles (owc)

    $4,000-6,000

    59Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2006Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe

One of the fabulous surprises, although Ihad suggested last year that it could jumpin quality, of my tastings, the 2006 LafiteRothschild is a great, great wine made froma blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16%Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. When I tasted itfrom barrel, it reminded me of their successful1988, but it is dramatically superior to thatvintage. Frankly, it may turn out to be asgood as the 2005, which in all of Bordeauxis a far greater vintage than 2006. Lafitessevere selection process (42% made it into

the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wineboasting an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationallysweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. Awine of extraordinary intensity, texture, anddepth with silky tannins as well as awesomeconcentration, this has turned out to be aremarkable Lafite Rothschild that should bedrinkable much earlier than the 2005, but agefor three decades. R. Parker, 97 pts. 02/093 bottles

    $1,500-2,300

    60Chateau Margaux 2005Margaux, 1er Cru Classe

Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallierand Corinne Mentzelopoulus, the 2005Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignonand 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaqueblue/purple color as well as an extraordinarybouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, blackraspberries, crme de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100%

new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak.Although full-bodied, the wine seems light onits feet because of the silky tannins as well asthe great gravel terroir from which it comes.Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define thismodern day classic. Is it better than the 2000,1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from thedecade of the eighties? Who knows, but it isunquestionably one of the all-time great winesmade at Chateau Margaux. This estate hasproduced only exceptional wines over the lastthree decades. The seamlessness of the 2005suggests it will perform well early, but it shouldlast for a half century or more. R. Parker, 98+pts. 04/086 bottles (owc)

    $3,000-4,250

    61Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2006Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe

A sensational effort, the 2006 MoutonRothschild exhibits an opaque purple color aswell as a classic Mouton perfume of crme decassis, flowers, blueberries, and only a hint ofoak. Dalhuin told me that in whisky barrel-tasting vintages such as 1989 and 1990,Mouton was aged in heavily toasted barrels, and they have backed off to a much lightertoast for the barrels interior. I think this has

worked fabulously well with the cassis qualityfruit they get from their Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied, powerful 2006 possessesextraordinary purity and clarity. A large-scaled,massive Mouton Rothschild that ranks as oneof the top four or five wines of the vintage,it may turn out to be the longest-lived wineof the vintage by a landslide. The label willundoubtedly be controversial as a relative ofSigmund Freud, Lucian Freud, has painteda rather comical Zebra staring aimlessly atwhat appears to be a palm tree in the middleof a stark courtyard. I suppose a psychiatristcould figure out the relationship between thatartwork and wine, but I couldnt see one. Thisutterly profound Mouton will need to sleep for15+ years before it will reveal any secondarynuances, but it is a packed and stacked first-growth Pauillac of enormous potential. Chateau Cos dEstournel sits atop a hillside,

the pinnacle of St. Estephe. The exoticism

of India, from the Taj style of its outward

    architectural elements to the elephants

flanking the Chateaus wine archives hints

at the perfume of its wines. Cos was in

the vanguard of the continuing Bordeaux

modernization of cellar design and vinicultural

methods, using a gravity driven process to

allow Coss terroir to unfold, drawing out itssignature heady exotic spice, in wines of

incredible finesse and supple balance. MK

62Chateau Cos dEstournel 2003St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe

The prodigious, fantastic 2003 CosdEstournel is a candidate for wine of thevintage. A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon(unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases wereproduced from low yields. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a compellingperfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, paingrille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinaryrichness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of thefinest wines ever made by this estate. Thegood news is that it will be drinkable at ayoung age yet evolve for three decades ormore. R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/066 bottles (owc)

It boasts a dense black/purple colorin addition to an extraordinary bouquet ofscorched earth, blackberries, and cassis, fabulous purity, a skyscraper-like texture, andsubstantial tannin in the finish. 65Chateau Montrose 2009St.

Some structure and

minerality can be detected in the background, but the overall impression is one of massiveblackberry, black currant and mulberry fruitintermixed with forest floor, damp earth, crushed rocks and a hint of spring flowers.Full-bodied with sweet but abundant tannin,Jean-Bernard Delmas believes this is thegreatest wine he has made during his shorttenure at Montrose since retiring from Haut-Brion. This wine will undoubtedly shut downfor a decade, then unleash its power, gloryand potential perfection. R. Parker, 100 pts.02/1212 bottles (owc)

    66Chateau Pontet Canet 2009Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe

An amazing wine in every sense, this classic,full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessentialPontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farmshis vineyards biodynamically a rarity inBordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes ofincense, graphite, smoke, licorice, crme decassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutablepurity, laser-like precision, colossal weightand richness, and sensational freshness,

this is a tour de force in winemaking thatis capable of lasting 50 or more years. Thetannins are elevated, but they are sweet andbeautifully integrated as are the acidity, woodand alcohol (which must be in excess of14%). This vineyard, which is situated on thehigh plateau of Pauillac adjacent to MoutonRothschild, appears to have done everythingperfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shutdown in the cellar and re-open in a decade ormore. R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/1212 bottles

    67Chateau Pape Clement 2005Pessac Leognan

Probably the greatest Pape-Clement evermade, the dense purple-colored 2005 (ablend of 55% Merlot and 45% CabernetSauvignon) exhibits sumptuous notes ofsmoky scorched earth, graphite, meltedlicorice, and blackberries. Once past theexquisite perfume, the wine reveals fullbody, extraordinary concentration, plenty of

chocolate, smoke, cassis, and blackberryflavors, and that unmistakable volcanicash-like earthiness that comes from thisappellation. The tannins are slightly sweeterthan those found in most northern Medocs, but this is still a backward, large-scaled effortthat requires 7-8 years of cellaring. It shouldlast for 30-35 years. R. Made in an over-the-top style that seemsto get more classic as the wine ages, thisspecial cuvee from the Fombrauge vineyard(made by Michel Rolland for Bernard Magrez)reveals a dense plum/purple color in additionto a big, sweet nose of camphor, creosote, blackberries, blueberries, espresso roast, graphite, and toasty oak, and a phenomenallylayered, full-bodied, rich mouthfeel. I thoughtthis 2000 would be close to full maturity by2006, but it remains surprisingly youthful. It should drink well for 20-25 more years.Bravo! R. Parker, 98 pts. 06/106 bottles (owc)

    69Chateau Pavie 2003St. Emilion

The 2003 Pavie (7,080 cases; 13.5%alcohol) is closest in style to the 2000, butslightly more evolved and exotic. Its denseplum/purple color is accompanied by anextraordinary perfume of charcoal, crmede cassis, melted licorice, espresso roast, and blackberries. The wine, which hits thepalate with a dramatic minerality, comesacross like a hypothetical blend of limestoneliqueur intermixed with black and red fruits. With massive depth, richness, and body, thistannic 2003 should be forgotten for 4-5 years, then enjoyed over the next four decades. The integration of acidity, tannin, and wood isflawless, and the wine is incredibly pure, rich, and intense. Paul Avril was a bigger-than-life vigneron, avisionary, and a great teacher, but Vincent hasbeen in charge for a number of years, and hehas rewarded his father with what I believe isthe greatest Chateauneuf du Pape made since1978 and 1990, the 2007. I have not onlytasted this wine at the estate, but I purchasedit for my cellar, and have now drunk it on

three separate occasions out of bottle. It isunquestionably one of the great Chateauneufsof my lifetime, and I suspect it will merit a threedigit score after another 3-4 years of cellaring. The blend is generally 65% Grenache, 20%Mourvedre, and the rest small amounts ofMuscardin, Vaccarese, Counoise, and Syrah. It exhibits what is probably the deepestcolor I have ever seen here, and the finishedalcohol is a high (for Clos des Papes) 15.5%.Still slightly restrained because of its recentbottling, but wow, what potential complexity,mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavorprofile are apparent. It is a sublime expressionof the art of winemaking as evidenced by

its dense purple color and big, sweet kissof kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice, roasted herbs, and smoked meat. It hitsthe palate with a fascinating combinationof substance, power, full-bodied authorityyet extraordinary freshness, elegance, andprecision. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and watch it unleash its glory over the nextthree decades. The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape La Cuveedu Papet may will turn out to be their finestexample since the 1998 and 1990. Stylistically,it probably comes closest to resembling thelegendary 1990. Notes of roasted meatsand smoked duck, with Provencal herbs, truffle, incense, licorice, and pepper, are all

Before bottling andimmediately after bottling, these two winesdifferences were not as evident. At presentthe Capo reveals that extra level of flavor, power, complexity and richness. It is a bigwine (16.1% alcohol less than in the 1998,but more than in the 2000 and 2007) boastinga dark plum/garnet color as well as a stunningbouquet of aged beef intermixed with pepper, herbes de Provence, and steak au poivre. This

unctuously textured, full-bodied Chateauneufpossesses enormous body, huge flavors andsweet, velvety tannins. Still youthful, it hasnot yet begun to close down, and Im notsure it ever will given this unusual vintage. Itis a modern day classic that should continueto provide provocative as well as compellingdrinking for 20-30+ years. R. Parker, 100 pts.10/103 bottles (owc)

113Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape CuveeReservee 2003Southern Rhone

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape CuveeReservee stands out as one of the all-timegreat wines made by Laurence Feraud andher father, Paul. I remember first tasting itfrom a large tank as it was still fermenting andit was already impressive! It is a full-bodied,powerful wine that must tip the scales at close

to 15.5% natural alcohol. I dont think thisbig, chewy, voluptuously textured wine willever close down. Dark plum/garnet with theclassic Provencal display of garrigue, lavender, pepper, kirsch and Asian plum sauce, thisfull-throttle wine has splendid concentration, silky tannins, and a very voluptuous texture. It should continue to drink well for another 25years. This explosive, heady Barolo burstsonto the palate with seamless layers of ripedark fruit, black cherries, menthol, cinnamon,

pine and minerals, revealing profounddepth and richness. It offers superb length, gorgeous, sweet tannins and a finish that lastsforever. Although it is a surprisingly accessibleSori Ginestra at this stage, I expect it willclose down at some point in the near future.Readers who have an opportunity to tastethis wine in the next few months should nothesitate to do so. The 2004 Terra di Lavoro is off the charts.Everything is in perfect balance. Silky, refinedtannins frame an explosive core of darkred fruit, smoke, minerals, ash, bacon fat, leather and minerals. The 2004 continues todevelop exquisitely in the glass, with layers ofaromatics, fruit and structure that continue toblossom over the course of several hours. The2004 still needs bottle age, as it is incrediblyprimary. Its elegance, however, is impossibleto miss. This bottle is simply out of this world. It now seems pretty obvious I underestimatedthe wine when I first tasted it a few years ago.One day the 2004 will be viewed in the sameleague with Mastroberardinos famous 1968Taurasis as among the most monumentalwines ever made in southern Italy. PiedmontMascarellos 2004 Barolo Monprivato isan explosive wine with an almost Pinot-likeexpression of purity in its fruit. This round, sweet Barolo is extremely primary at thisstage, with tons of dense fruit that almostcover the wines tannins completely. Subtleovertones of roses and tar develop in theglass, rounding out this majestic wine.Monprivato is one of the worlds very finestvalues in collectible, age-worthy wine, andthe 2004 is another classic in the making. 132Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2007Piedmont

The 2007 Barolo Monprivato is stunninglybeautiful. Monprivato is seldom this r ich whenit is young. It is most often intensely aromatic,mid-weight and frequently out of balance, especially right after bottling. The 2007 isnone of those things. It is a rich, dramatic wineendowed with tons of fruit and a sweeping, enveloping personality. It is also primary

and at the beginning of what is likely to bea long, long life. Despite its seeming fragility,Monprivato is one of the most long-lived of allBaroli, even in its weakest vintages. The 2007is spectacular, but it is very, very young andin need of significant cellaring to shed someits baby fat. Purists may prefer the 2006. Ihave not tasted both wines side by side frombottle, but 10 years from now it wont matter.Readers will be thrilled to own either. In 2007Mascarello opted not to bottle his RiservaCa dMorissio as he didnt think there wasa huge difference between the Riserva andthe straight Monprivato. I guess we will neverknow for sure, although my barrel tastingshave always suggested otherwise. In anyevent, savvy readers know what happenswhen there is no Ca dMorissio in a goodto great vintage. Recent examples includethe 1999 and 2005. By now, its pretty clearthe direction those wines have taken. Barololovers will not want to be without the 2007Monprivato. The 2004 Barolo Riserva RocchedellAnnunziata has developed beautifullysince I last tasted it a few years ago. Thatsaid, I am amazed how bright and primary thefruit still is. Sweet, perfumed aromatics lead toa core of silky fruit as this elegant, pedigreedBarolo emerges from the glass. The tannins

are exceptionally refined all the way throughto the finish, while the French oak is virtuallyimperceptible. What remains is a gorgeous,fruit-driven Barolo that captures the essenceof the Scavino style at its best. The wineshould enjoy a long drinking window to age25 and quite likely longer. A. The following two lots are consigned directly

    fromthecellarsofTheBruery.

Founded in 2008 by Patrick Rue, the Bruery

focuses on Belgian-inspired ales with a

distinctly American bent. All beers areoffered in 750ml format and eschew force-

carbonation in favor of bottle conditioning.

    Constantly experimenting and never satisfied,

the Bruery has developed dozens of recipes

on their own and in collaboration with other

breweries (and wineries) ranging from pale

ales to wild ales to barrel aged stouts.

The first lot offered contains a bottle of

Batch 1: Levuds, the first beer released by

the Bruery and the winner of a homebrew

competition held by the Bruery to determine

their first batch. Accompanying Batch 1 arefive bottles of the Anniversary Old Ales. Each

year is named after traditional anniversary

gifts (paper, cotton, leather, fruit and wood)

and is produced in a traditional solera style.

Over the years, the beer has developed

complex layers as older batches are blended

with new and aged in a variety of former spirit

    casks.

The second lot includes twelve bottles

centered around what is likely the Bruerys

most popular offering: Black Tuesday. Offered

once annually on the last Tuesday of October,Black Tuesday is both an homage to the

stock market crash of 1929 and a behemoth

of a beer a Russian Imperial Stout aged in

bourbon barrels and every release has been

over 18% alcohol by volume. Included here

are four vintages of Black Tuesday and eight

beers that offer Black Tuesday with a twist,

either blended with other Bruery beers or

aged with cacao nibs, hazelnuts, coffee or

even Syrah grapes from the nearby Los Olivos

    vineyard.

The Bruery has offered to donate all proceedsfrom the sale of these lots to benefit The One

Fund Boston, whose sole purpose is to raise

money to help those families most affected

by the tragic events that unfolded during

the 2013 Boston Marathon. This gesture

of compassion speaks to the character of

founder Patrick Rue and everyone else at The

    Bruery.

A consignment like this does not come often.

Often youll have a consignor who focuses

their collecting in one area like Burgundy,

    California Cabernet, Belgian lambic or

American Stout and they sink their teeth in

there, hunting for the gems of that region

and everything that comes with it. But rare

is the case when all bases are covered. This

beer collection is just that rare instance.

Like American Stout? Heres a few bottles ofGoose Island Rare Bourbon County Stout and

a handful of Barrel Aged Dark Lords as well. Is

lambic more your style? How about verticals

of Blabaer, or a bottle of Don Quijote, or why

not some Loerik? If you prefer American Wild

Ale, theres a complete vertical of Cable Car

or a bottle of Veritas 004. And, of course,

dont forget about the Midnight Sun M or the

Sam Adams Millennium. Every lot is a high

note and every bottle was removed from

    temperature-controlled professional storage

    for this auction.

Absolutely compelling in two tastings of this

vintage, the 2000 Margaux is composed of90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The extraordinary seductiveness, complexaromatics, and purity it exhibits lead meto believe it has reached its window offull maturity. Medium-bodied, with layersof concentration, stunning blue, red, andblack fruits intermixed with spring flowers, asubtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctivepersonality that is elegant while at the sametime powerful and substantial, this is amulti-dimensional wine that was extremelyapproachable and drinkable in both tastingsI had of it. The color remains a healthy, evenopaque bluish/purple, but there is no reasonto hesitate to drink it. It should evolve foranother 30-40 years, so there is no hurryeither. R. Enthusiast doesnt even begin to do this

consignor justice. With bottles from every

major wine-producing region in the world,

this offering represents only part of a much

larger collection. After a few lots of Bordeaux,

well travel through Burgundy with selections

spread over five decades before digging into

one of the most complete Rhone cellars Ive

ever seen: Beaucastel in spades, includingHommage a Jacques Perrin in original wood,

Guigal, Chave, Jaboulet and more. Then its

on to Alsace, Germany, Spain, Italy, California,

and eventually a jaw-dropping cache of Port.

Bottles sampled from the cellar showed

wonderfully and all bottles were removed from
