FRANCE

A rich, varied selection from across the length and breadth of this storied wine country. Plenty to entice collectors and the curious alike.

BORDEAUXRED WINE

CHÂTEAU BELGRAVE 20155e cru, AC Haut-Médoc

TASTING NOTE: Barrel Sample. This is packed with dusty tannins that are supported by intense acidity. The texture, initially dry, then reveals layers of black fruits and vibrant acidity. The finish is dry and lingering, with good tannic grip. Score: 92 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2016)

373688 (XD) 750 mL $65.00

CHÂTEAU MAYNE-VIEIL CUVÉE ALIÉNOR VIEILLES VIGNES 2015AC Fronsac

TASTING NOTE: This is the luxury cuvée from vineyards in the Seze family since 1918. With its perfumed fruits and firm tannins it is serious as well as sumptuous. It has weight and a dry texture that will soften into the blackberry fruits and generous structure. This wine, with its still-firm texture, needs to age, so drink from 2022. Editors’ Choice. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2018)

12447 (XD) 750 mL $33.00

CHÂTEAU KIRWAN 20103e cru, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: This full, fruity wine is packed with acidity as well as ripeness. It has a fresh black-currant character, and the structure underneath is strong. It will develop relatively quickly, but then could hold at its peak for many years. Score: 94 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Feb. 1, 2013)

323238 (D) 750 mL $177.00

CHÂTEAU CAP DE MOURLIN 2009AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Quite an exotic wine that will deliver dark fruit and spice, an evocative minty overtone and mature suggestions of dried fruit, earth and leather. Soft, lush and long, this will be a great option tonight for lamb or braised beef.

12480 (XD) 750 mL $96.00

CHATEAU CLOS DE SARPE 2008AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: Deep garnet colored, the 2008 Clos de Sarpe has a nose that is wonderfully ripe and decadent with baked plums, kirsch and Black Forest cake notions over hints of star anise, incense, char-grilled meats and unsmoked cigar. Medium-bodied with incredible freshness and minerality coming through on the palate, it features wonderful red fruit accents and spicy sparks in the mouth with a long, mineral-laced finish. Drink date: 2018-2038. Score: 93 (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, robertparker.com, May 31, 2018)

11754 (XD) 750 mL $162.00

WHITE WINE

CHÂTEAU DOISY DAËNE 2010AC Sauternes

TASTING NOTE: A juicy, compact style, with tangerine, apricot, toasted almond and heather notes all rolled together at the core, waiting to unfurl fully through the unctuous, passion fruit-filled finish. Plenty remains in reserve, but this is hard to resist now. Drink now through 2030. Ranked #45 in the 2013 Wine Spectator Top 100. Score: 94 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, March 31, 2013)

11755 (S) 750 mL $45.00

CHÂTEAU SIGALAS RABAUD 20091er cru, AC Sauternes

TASTING NOTE: The Sigalas Rabaud was sensational out of barrel and served blind, the wine does nothing to dispel my initial optimism that this is the apogee for the estate – so far. It is bestowed with an intense bouquet of quince, orange zest and almond with a lighter touch of honey compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with great viscosity. This is an assertive Sauternes that wants to make an impression, although it does not display the complexity or breeding of Yquem and Suduiraut. Still, it is very composed and perhaps is saving something up for later, biding its time as it were. This is a wondrous wine. Drink now-2040. Score: 95 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, Feb. 27, 2013)

12233 (S) 375 mL $24.00

BURGUNDYCÔTE DE NUITSRED WINE

HENRI DE VILLAMONT CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY CHÂTELOTS 1ER CRU 2016AC

This wine saw just over 15 months in oak to soften its signature tannic frame. A wine for food – think lamb or duck – that will continue to evolve until the early ’30s at the very least.

571836 (XD) 750 mL $98.00

HENRI DE VILLAMONT GRANDS-ÉCHEZEAUX GRAND CRU 2015AC

TASTING NOTE: Big, rich while also smooth, this is going to be an impressive wine. It has power and firm tannins as well as plenty of ripe black fruits and acidity. This wine, from one of the range of grand crus in Vosne-Romanée, will age well. Drink from 2026. Score: 95 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 1, 2017)

7 VINTAGES

MAISON ROCHE DE BELLENE VIEILLES VIGNES GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 2015AC

TASTING NOTE: The typical firm, tannic structure of a Gevrey-Chambertin is very present in this young wine. The tannins are balanced with the juicy red-berry fruits, crisp acidity and minerality. Together these elements make an impressively dense wine that will age well. Drink from 2022.Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Feb. 1, 2018)

240424 (XD) 750 mL $74.00

CÔTE DE BEAUNERED WINE

DAVID MOREAU MARANGES 2017AC

This wine is sourced from vines planted in 1943 and 1947. David Moreau focuses on expressing the purity of his terroir while delivering a finessed, charming, ageable wine. This one typically offers a supple, refined experience that strikes a perfect balance between the intensity of the strawberry fruit and a delicately articulated rustic provenance. Precise and pure, it will drink until 2028+.

610444 (XD) 750 mL $41.00

DOMAINE A-F GROS BEAUNE LES BOUCHEROTTES 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Beaune Les Boucherottes 1er Cru, matured in around 25% new oak, has a fragrant, pressed-flower-scented bouquet offering ample red berry fruit, hints of Seville orange marmalade and a light vanilla note. The medium-bodied is fresh and vibrant with supple tannin, and the oak is very well integrated toward the fleshy and quite persistent finish. This is one of my favorite wines from Domaine A-F Gros this year and it comes highly recommended. Drinking date: 2021-2035. Score: 90-92 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Jan. 2019)

11729 (XD) 750 mL $106.00

VAUDOISEY-CREUSEFOND POMMARD 2017AC

Pommard is one of the most well-known growing areas in Burgundy. The wines are typically quite opulent and generous, with richly articulated aromas and flavours. These are among the most muscular Pinots produced in Burgundy, and wines such as this one from Vaudoisey-Creusefond can easily age for 12+ years. Decant and serve with beef bourguignon.

13478 (XD) 750 mL $56.00

ALBERT MOROT BEAUNE BRESSANDES 1ER CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the elegant and manifestly cool nose that displays essence of various red berries, humus and appealing floral hints. The middle weight flavors aren’t quite as dense but they’re finer still with a succulent mid-palate before concluding in a naturally sweet, dusty and balanced finish that flashes a touch of youthful austerity. Lovely stuff and particularly so thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins. Score: 91 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 15, 2018)

610584 (XD) 750 mL $67.00

HENRI DE VILLAMONT LES RENARDES CORTON GRAND CRU 2016AC

This is a wine that will reflect the power and concentration for which Corton is famed. Les Renardes is a walled climat on the eastern side of the Montagne de Corton hill, and its wines are notably rich, earthy and structured. This example will have dense, focused dark fruit with leather and earth tones and a marked minerality. It will reward patience and will easily cellar for 15-20 years.

561225 (XD) 750 mL $125.00

ALBERT MOROT LES CENT VIGNES BEAUNE 1ER CRU 2014AC

Rich and juicy, this wine holds excellent potential. With its ripe red-berry fruit,

balanced tannins and acidity, and spice from the wood aging, it will become a concentrated wine. Drink from 2020.Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Oct. 1, 2016)

226340 (XD) 750 mL $66.00

ROCHE DE BELLENE CLOS DES CHÊNES VOLNAY 1ER CRU 2014AC

TASTING NOTE: So quiet now, but deep, darker and more serious than the higher toned 2013, yet still so far from showing either Volnay beauty or charm. The cherries darken and the Premier Cru earthy soul rises with the fruit, part calcaire, more so marl and really structured. The tannins are finer and more seriously ingrained in this vintage, clearly stronger and fuller in longevity possibility. Keep the Clos Des Chénes faith through the exercise of patience. Drink date: 2022-2032. Score: 94 (Michael Godel, winealign.com, June 19, 2018)

638056 (XD) 750 mL $97.00

WHITE WINE

CAPUANO-FERRERI CUVÉE PRESTIGE CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2018AC

This hand-harvested and -sorted wine will be round and serious, with bright citrus fruit, a creamy texture and notable stony minerality. Long and charming with a lip-smacking finish.

be easygoing and round, with good weight and fruit presence. Look to enjoy it over the next 5-7 years.

540161 (XD) 750 mL $56.00

MAISON LOUIS LATOUR CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2017AC

Crafted to reflect power and concentration, this wine will have exotic, layered spice, white flowers, lychee, apple, pear and melon framed by delicate, artfully expressed oak tones.

77115 (XD) 750 mL $121.00

MILLER-CYROT MEURSAULT 2017AC

Rich and powerful, Meursault’s Chardon-nays are wines of refinement and character. Their benchmark suggestions of white flowers, nuts, butter and honeyed citrus fruit are the epitome of opulence for Burgundian whites. This is a wine of significance that will shine with lobster or veal.

13677 (XD) 750 mL $103.00

MURISALTIEN SOUS LE BOIS DE NOËL PERNAND-VERGELESSES 2017AC

The white wines of Pernand-Vergelesses are floral and spicy, with a delectable minerality and impressive balance and approachability. This one will be a treat with sushi, or freshwater fish in a white-wine sauce.

12128 (XD) 750 mL $49.00

JEAN-MARC BOILLOT PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 2018AC

Jean-Marc Boillot has earned a reputation as a winemaker determined to craft wines of focus and precision. Such is his drive for purity and quality that he actually broke with his family, believing that their approach was creating mediocre wines. The Jean-Marc Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 2018 will be floral and fresh, with citrus, apple and spice. Expect a bracing, lean, balanced wine of great energy that will drink well through 2025+.

13674 (XD) 750 mL $136.00

DOMAINE LOUIS JADOT MEURSAULT CHARMES 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru comes from Domaine Prieur-Brunet, specifically two plots in Meursault Charmes-Dessus (1.2 hectares), one close to Les Referts and the other close to Genevrières. These are integrated with existing vineyards owned by Louis Jadot, so the label will be under Domaine Louis Jadot and not Prieur-Brunet. This has a pretty, quite precise bouquet of citrus fruit infused with yellow flower aromas; light touches of walnut emerge with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and a hint of black currant leaf toward the finish; certainly a more elegant take on this Premier Cru. The cru has clearly benefited from the addition of the new holdings. An excellent Meursault. Drinking window: 2020-2032. Score: 92-94 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Jan. 2019)

404855 (XD) 750 mL $135.00

DOMAINE TAWSE VERGELESSES SAVIGNY-LÈS-BEAUNE 1ER CRU 2017AC

Speaking of the white wines of the 2017 vintage, Stephen Tanzer of vinous.com had this to say: “The largest white Burgundy crop since 2009 has yielded pliant, elegant, pure wines with considerable aromatic appeal and early accessibility, along with the balance and stuffing for at least mid-term aging” (September 6, 2018). This Savigny from Moray Tawse will

DOMAINE DES MALANDES VAU DE VEY CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: The touch of wood aging has released the ripe, creamy texture and rich structure of this full-bodied wine. It is intense and mineral, with delicious potential and good acidity at the end. Drink this wine from 2021. Editors’ Choice. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Oct. 1, 2019 )

701219 (XD) 750 mL $42.00 DOMAINE BILLAUD-SIMON LES PREUSES CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The best of the Billaud-Simon grands crus in 2017, this comes from old vines on the northern part of slope. It may be unwooded but it’s certainly not lacking in flavour or salinity, with considerable complexity and understated power. Drink date: 2022-2033. Score: 96 (Tim Atkin, MW, decanter.com, July 17, 2018)

DOMAINE BILLAUD-SIMON MONT DE MILIEU 1ER CRU CHABLIS 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu confirmed its strong showing of last year, opening in the glass with a classy bouquet of crisp green orchard fruit, oyster shell and white flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with excellent depth at the core, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. Drink date: 2021-2037. RHÔNENORTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

J.L. CHAVE SÉLECTION SILÈNE CROZES-HERMITAGE 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Bright violet. Mineral-accented cherry, boysenberry and smoky bacon aromas are complicated by suggestions of olive and candied flowers. Energetic and focused for the vintage, offering concentrated bitter cherry, cassis and violet pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Closes sappy, smooth and quite long, with sneaky tannins and a lingering suggestion of juicy black and blue fruits. Drink date: 2022-2030. Score: 92 (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, Sept. 2019)

MICHELAS ST. JEMMS LA CHASSELIÈRE CROZES-HERMITAGE 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Bottled just 11 days prior to my visit, the 2017 Crozes Hermitage la Chasseliere comes from 40-year-old vines grown in the sectors of Pont de l’Isere and Mercurol. It spent 12 months in used barrels and an oak cuve and offers next-level intensity compared to the other Crozes-Hermitage’s at this address. Rich, tannic blackberries cascade over the full-bodied palate, adding hints of dark chocolate and espresso on the chewy finish. Drink date: 2020-2027. Score: 92+ (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Dec. 28, 2018)

J.L. CHAVE SÉLECTION FARCONNET HERMITAGE 2015AC

Since 1481, the small family-owned Chave has been a driving force in the wines of the Rhône Valley. The grapes for this Hermitage are sourced from three parcels on the Hermitage hill, each of which brings a particular aspect to the final wine: Diognières, which imparts spice notes; Péléat, which adds finesse; and Gréffieux, from where the wine gets its structure.

DOMAINE CHRISTIAN MOREAU PÈRE & FILS LES CLOS CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Les Clos produces the richest of Chablis’ grands crus. From 50- to 60-year-old vines; 60% in stainless steel, 40% in used barrels. Great precision and structure for a great future; an exceptional wine in 2017. Drink date: 2021-2030. Score: 97 (Steven Spurrier, decanter.com, Feb. 21, 2019)

CHÂTEAU DU MOULIN-À-VENT 2015AP Moulin-à-Vent

TASTING NOTE: This wine is beautifully balanced, with rich tannins and great concentration. Ripe black fruits dominate the structure, giving it density that is enhanced by the wood aging. The aftertaste is balanced, juicy and ready to drink. Score: 92 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, May 1, 2019)

12466 (D) 750 mL $34.00

Each parcel is vinified and aged separately before final blending occurs. The resulting wine is pure, pleasurable and eminently ageable; consider following this wine for 15 years or more.

WHITE WINE

M. CHAPOUTIER CHANTE-ALOUETTE HERMITAGE BLANC 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The blended white Hermitage the 2017 Hermitage Chante-Alouette is a terrific wine this year, maybe the best I’ve ever tasted. Honeyed pear and citrus notes lead into a full-bodied, brassy-hued wine with a rich, velvety texture. It’s lush, broad and mouthfilling, with a long, harmonious finish. While delicious now, expect it to close up within another year or two, only to reopen once it hits about age ten. Drink date: 2018-2035.Score: 94 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2018)

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Condrieu Les Ravines is a blend of five parcels, mainly on granite-based soils. Forty percent is barrel fermented and aged, with the balance going into stainless steel. Loaded with floral and apricot aromas, it speaks clearly of Viognier on the nose. It’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, where it’s plump, succulent and harmonious, with a long, velvety finish. TASTING NOTE: One of my favorite straight Châteauneufs was this effort from Saint Siffrein. The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts remarkable ripeness and power without any heat, incredibly pure raspberries and stone fruit, rich, velvety tannins that never seem obtrusive and a long, intense finish. It’s a classic blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks and foudres. The tart flesh of tangerine and the zest of lemon are softened and enriched with orange oil and ample concentration. This is pure and racy, linear and bold. TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese offers a deep, pure, cool and smoky bouquet of ripe and concentrated Riesling fruits along with crunchy slate plates. Silky, round and lush on the palate, with very fine tannins and lingering salinity, this is a gorgeously fine and salty Riesling with structure, finesse and tensioned length. GIACOMO CONTERNO VIGNA FRANCIA BARBERA D’ALBA 2017DOC

TASTING NOTE: Compared to the expression from the Cerretta vineyard, the 2017 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Francia is even darker in color with more austerity and muscle power at the back. The alcohol reading of the two wines is the same (15.5%), but this expression offers less obvious fruit and more dark mineral instead. The soils in the Francia vineyard see a mix of limestone sand and clay, and this is true of where both the Barbera and the Nebbiolo vines are located. You sense an increased mineral presence in the Francia with iron, salt and scorched earth. This full-throttle Barbera is penetrating and deep. This is a fine expression of the grape, offering exacting detail and precision. Score: 94 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, June 28, 2019)

NERVI GATTINARA 2016DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Tasted from the barrel, the 2016 Gattinara will be bottled in September and will hit the market one month later in October. This is a more important wine compared to the 2015. It shows more depth and substance in the mouth and more length. It’s more robust too. The consumer should wait several more months for this one. Starting in 2018, the Nervi estate is fully under the control of Roberto Conterno of the Giacomo Conterno estate in Monforte d’Alba. Drink date: 2021-2030. VIRNA CANNUBI BOSCHIS BAROLO 2014DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is a wine of depth and substance. This Barolo achieves a very pretty level of density and power for what is a cooler vintage. Red rose aromas rise to the top but are quickly followed by more substantial tones of blackberry and ripe cherry. This is a mid-weight effort that is enhanced by finely tuned layers of spice and crushed stone. The wine needs a bit of time to open and put on volume, but once it does it sails forth with pride and purpose. Drink date: 2020-2035. Score: 93 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, June 29, 2018)

CONTERNO MONFORTINO RISERVA BAROLO 2013DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a huge, towering wine marked by serious fruit intensity and a backbone of firm, classically austere tannins. Certainly next to the 2014 and 2015, the sheer tannic clout of the 2013 is impossible to miss. Sage mint, tobacco and dried flower notes add striking shades of aromatic nuance, but the 2013 is ultimately distinguished by its huge, potent personality. It is sure to thrill those who own it for many decades to come. In 2013, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his Barolo Francia. Instead, he chose to use all of the fruit for the flagship Barolo Monfortino, which up until the present, he had only done once before, in 2002. Score: 99 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Nov. 2018)

TASTING NOTE: I always feel like I’ve entered a vinous fairyland when I taste the wines made at Podere le Ripi. These are highly distinctive expressions that offer flurries of the unreal and unexpected. In the case of the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Cielo d’Ulisse, the aromas dart around like Tinker Bell touching on red cherry, raspberry, licorice, cola and grilled herb. Each one of those characteristics is suddenly made bright and alive as if by a magic wand. PETROLO GALATRONA 2016DOC Val d'Arno di Sopra

TASTING NOTE: This is the flagship wine from Luca Sanjust’s Petrolo estate located not too far from Arezzo in the Valdarno area of eastern Tuscany. The 2016 Galatrona is indeed a masterpiece to behold. This wine offers thick layering and deep intensity with aromas that offer an incredible range, starting off with luscious dark chocolate on one side and ending with fragrant white truffle on the far end of its long aromatic trajectory. You get plummy fruit, spice, sweet tobacco and tilled earth packed tight in between. This full- bodied Merlot is softly textured and succulent with long-lasting flavor intensity on the close. Petrolo’s Merlot is planted in a ten-hectare parcel distinguished by thick clay soils. I have been watching Galatrona’s evolution for years and have tasted the wine on occasion in various vertical tastings. This is my favorite vintage made thus far. The fruit is dark and slightly sweet with aromas of black cherries and dried blackberries. Those flavors deliver rich, soft intensity. ISOLE E OLENA CEPPARELLO 2007IGT Toscana

TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Cepparello (Sangiovese) makes a case for itself as one of the finest wines ever made at Isole e Olena. It is an open, sublime Cepparello endowed with tons of clarity and definition. The ripe red fruit floats on a core of refined, silky tannins that caress the palate with exceptional elegance and finesse. As the wine sits in the glass its inner perfume gradually emerges, leading to an eternal, beautifully crafted finish. The ripeness of the vintage is beautifully balanced by the acidity that is the trademark of Sangiovese grown in these hillside plots. Simply put, this is an utterly thrilling wine that will be a joy to follow over the coming years. In many ways, the restraint, elegance and polish all suggest Cepparello is the Haut-Brion of Tuscany’s high-end, pure Sangioveses. The 2007 Cepparello was fermented in wood uprights and saw three weeks of contact on the skins. Malolactic fermentation took place in equal parts steel and French oak. The final blend was assembled and the wine was subsequently aged in French oak barrels (1/3 new) for 18 months. Proprietor Paolo De Marchi describes the 2007 season as

one where periods of heat alternated with well-timed spells of rain. Overall temper- atures remained warm (but never extreme) throughout the year, which allowed the fruit to ripen evenly. Still, it was a challenging vintage, and De Marchi was forced to carry out a stringent selection in his vineyards. Drinking window: 2015-2027. Score: 96 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Oct. 2010)

Andrew Jefford: It’s not showy on the nose but is super-attractive, and it just grows more so the more time you spend with it. On the palate it’s rich, deep, magnificently tannic and long – an absolutely unbridled Amarone, yet at the same time of extra- ordinary resonance, authority and subtlety. An Amarone masterclass! It was bottled after 15 months in oak. This is a powerful vintage; the wine has clout, power and concentration and a little more rusticity (the textbook tree bark!) than the 2017 that I tasted together with this one. TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Las Viñas de Eusebio is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano that has great finesse and complexity. It matured in a 1,600-liter oak

foudre and 225- and 500-liter oak barrels to make enough wine to fill some 7,000 bottles. It has a quite classical profile, with a mixture of fruit and spice (some new oak was used in the élevage), and in a cool year like 2016, it should have all the ingredients to develop nicely in bottle. It has chalky tannins from the limestone soils, which adds to that serious and classical profile. It might even need a little more time in bottle to polish the tannins a little bit. DOÑA PAULA ALLUVIA VINEYARD SELECCIÓN DE BODEGA MALBEC 2016Gualtallary, Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: Until 2014, Selección de Bodega was a blend of the best barrels from different vineyards. Alcohol levels hovered around 15.5%, and the oak predominated. But times change, and as of 2015, it comes solely from the most calcareous sectors of the Alluvia Vineyard in Gualtallary. This vintage – from a very cold year in Mendoza, Selección de Bodega is an arrow of mineral and fruity flavors, with a tension of granular tannins very characteristic of limestone soils. CATENA ZAPATA ADRIANNA VINEYARD RIVER STONES MALBEC 2014Gualtallary, Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Adrianna Vineyard River Stones is the second vintage of the Malbec from the stonier part of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary that is next to a dry river bed (the vineyard has 110 hectares that were planted in 1994). It fermented in open-top 500-liter oak barrels with full clusters. It was pressed before the end of fermentation, and it then finished fermenting without skins (like a white) and matured in 1,800-liter oak foudre for 18 months. It’s a compact, super serious Malbec with concentration and power, great balance, abundant tannins, strong minerality, firm texture, great austerity and no concessions for sweetness whatsoever. TASTING NOTE: The NV Palo Cortado Cardenal VORS, like the whole VORS collection from Valdespino is outstanding. It is fed from the solera of the Palo Cortado C.P. where the Palomino grapes come from the Macharnudo Alto vineyard, fermented in American oak botas. It’s 22% alcohol and has nine grams of (undetectable) residual sugar which makes it very drinkable. It’s a monumental wine of dark mahogany color with a green edge, a complex, ever- changing, concentrated, clean and delineated nose of spices, dark chocolate, Cuban cigar and balsamic notes of incense, and a sharp, saline palate. It is highly concentrated, powerful and clean, with an eternal, lingering aftertaste. TASTING NOTE: An attractive wine, the 2013 Les Forts de Latour has turned out beautifully, even if it is a bit more angular than it was en primeur. Bright acids and sharp tannins give certain edginess that suggest the Forts de Latour might need more time, but then again, the 2013 probably doesn’t have the stuffing to support more than medium term aging. Hints of sweet spice, herbs, leather, tobacco, grilled herbs, and menthol accent the nuanced finish. All in all, this is a very pretty 2013. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color, lots of unctuosity and a boatload of sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke and oak. Dating to the Roman period, the Scharzhofberg vineyard, of which they own nearly 30%, is perhaps one of the most famous in the world, let alone in Germany’s Mosel region. The reputations of both the Müller family and the Scharzhofberg vineyard have been created almost symbiotically, as both have played a role in defining how the world perceives the other. Across the portfolio, the Rieslings of Egon Müller are defined by acidity and precision.

As enthusiastic as my assessment of the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is, I’m stopping short of that perfect score. This vintage is something of a moving target with wines that are beautiful, without a doubt, yet the growing conditions were not even across the appellation, and achieving optimal tannic management posed a challenge to many producers. If I were to make any criticism of this wine, it would fall along those lines. That aside, this is a beautiful Brunello that boasts deep intensity and bold black fruit flavors that are plummy and rich. Spice, toasted oak and tobacco frame that primary fruit. Cerretalto ages in oak for 30 months and that strong imprint has added to the structure, depth and contemporary character of this A-list Brunello. That oak imprint is also reinforced in the wine’s tannins. There’s no doubt that this wine needs more cellar aging. I would absolutely not suggest drinking it within the next five years. Any awkwardness it shows now should iron itself out with more bottle time. Only 9,771 bottles were made. Drink date: 2023-2040.Score: 97 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2019)

TASTING NOTE: Released seven years after the harvest, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is a stunning wine. It soars to the highest altitudes in terms of elegance and power. These opposite forces – muscle versus grace – are what distinguish this classic vintage. Col d’Orcia has effortlessly captured and immortalized both sides of the continuum. TASTING NOTE: The 2011 Encontro 1 is an equal blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional aged for 18 months in a mixture of new and used French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Frequently on the stunning side, this is concentrated and structured, with velvety texture as the cherry on top. There’s good acidity and ample power, but this is beautifully balanced. The nose has a touch of earthiness for character. The wood does interfere a bit with the Baga character, but it is not too strong. Even Baga purists might like how it shows after 90 minutes of decanting. It is drinking nicely now, but it should easily improve over the next decade. This is probably the most interesting bottle I’ve seen yet from this Quinta (owned by Global Wines). It may age even better than anticipated.
