James MorisonShaw Lambie was born inWallsend on 25th September1908. He was the only son ofRobert Dickie Lambie and AnneDale Lambie, and had for sisters.He was educated at NewcastlePreparatory School then DurhamSchool, where he played in the1st rugby 15, and rowed in the1st eight. On leaving school hejoined the family business, R. D.Lambie, of Third St, Wallsend,which manufactured shipslifeboats and other commercialcraft. In 1936 he married HelenThomson Ogilvie and had twosons. In the years before the warhe captained Wallsend RFC andheld a commission in theTerritorial Army (RoyalEngineers). Although held to bein a ‘reserved occupation’ hewent off to France as aLieutenant in the RE with theBritish Expeditionary Force. Hisunit initially layed downtemporary landing strips forfighter aircraft, but later, in 1940,demolished bridges in order tohinder the German advance onDunkirk and so allow as manyBritish troops as possible toescape. Eventually he leftDunkirk on perhaps the lasttrawler to leave before the enemyarrived. On arriving home, hefound that his father’s healthwas failing and it was decidedthat he was needed to run thebusiness (supplying ships’lifeboats to the many shipyardsthroughout the UK). With the aidof the local MP and the Admiraltyhis reserved occupation statuswas upheld and he spent theremainder of the war running thecompany and played anincreasing part in the local HomeGuard, being promoted to Major.In the early years after the war,Lambie (Wallsend) Ltd thrivedunder his leadership, serving theUK shipbuilding industry and

exporting around the world. Hedeveloped the company to useglass fibre technology in theproduction of lifeboats and othercommercial craft, but with thedimunition of the UK and otherEuropean shipbuilding industries,the company was sold in 1972.He died in March 1978.Estimate: £300.00 - £400.00
