From Erics Web Site: As a woodturning arst, demonstrator, passionate teacher and private instructor I am excited about the creave process and exploring the quest for clean forms and "pure" curves. October 2017 www.seattlewoodturners.org

Our demonstrator this month will be Eric Loftstrom. Eric will be using a Skew Chisel to show a number of turning techniques. This will be a subset of the skills he will be passing on to those attending his Skew Chisel Workshop on Saturday, October 14th which is full. There are still a few openings for his Sharpening Workshop on Sunday, October 15th.

From Eric’s Web Site: As a woodturning artist, demonstrator, passionate teacher and private instructor I am excited about the creative process and exploring the quest for clean forms and "pure" curves. I enjoy turning all styles of pieces- anything from pens, peppermills, fitted-lid boxes, utilitarian bowls and serving utensils, to sculptural one-of-a-kinds!

Embellishing with colors, textures, and sculpting is a fun but sometimes risky way to add my voice to pieces. While most of my pieces are embellished in some way, the main goal is achieving a pleasing form.

One of my core passions is to share the journey with others. Teaching and demonstrating woodturning techniques allows me to share what I have learned and fosters a dialogue with oth-ers to stir the creative juices!

Check out Eric’s web site (http://www.ericlofstrom.com) for more inspiration and a number of resources he uses while teaching.

President’s Message I want to thank David Lutrick for another great Saw Dust Session on basic bowl turning with the newer members last month. John Moe and Hal Johnson had two ornamental workshops a couple of weekends ago. Feedback was very positive as usual. John and Hal do a great job every year on these workshops, we as a club need to thank them.

Also, I want to thank Mike Hughes, for taking me down to pick up the two lathes that were bought from donated money on the Friday after the meeting last month. Club members should thank Andy Firpo for stepping

up along with the anonymous donor to allow us to buy these lathes. We now have 3 Jet 1221VS lathes installed on stands for club Sawdust Sessions and Workshops.

The old club lathes will be auctioned off at the October meeting. There are three lathes; Jet 1015 starting bid $200.00, Jet 1014VS starting bid $300.00, Jet 1220 with PSI variable speed kit installed starting bid $275.00. These lathes will be sold with a 6” tool rest, live center, and a 4 prong drive center. The club will keep the chucks and other accessories to use with the new 12-21’s.

Eric Lofstrom will be demonstrating the skew chisel at the October club meeting. This should be very informative and fun to watch. Then, Eric will be having a skew chisel workshop on Saturday Oc-tober 14th, which is full, but you can get your name on the waiting list and a third sharpening work-shop on Sunday October 15, which still has a few spots open. This is a great sharpening class and for some of the more seasoned members too. A seasoned wood turner can always learn something new in the world of sharpening.

The Bellevue Arts Museum is now showing our club member’s creative side of wood decorating with a little actual wood turning October 6th though January 8th of 2018. It is downstairs and you do not need to pay to see the pieces next to the gift shop on the ground floor. More will be said about this at the club meeting.

David Lutrick is heading up the nominating committee before elections in November. The positions up for election the year are, President, Treasurer, Director of Programs, Member at Large (Position 1). Please remember that our club cannot run on few members for long periods of time. Other club members are needed to step up and donate your time and energy to keep our club moving forward.

Our club is also looking for a new location to have workshops and saw dust sessions in January of 2018. If you know of a place that handle this contact Andy Firpo.

The A/V Committee members spent hours looking into new equipment for the club. They are going to share information with the general membership on the purchase of this equipment in a timely manner over the next year.

Be safe out there!

Newsletter Editor Needed Dan Robbins will need to step down due to a number of pressing personal issues. This is a great opportunity to lend your voice to keeping members up to date on club activities. He has agreed to continue through the December newsletter and train his replacement.

Woodturning: Functional Craft to Decorative Art

October 6, 2017 – January 8, 2018

The Seattle Woodturners and Bellevue Arts Museum are pleased to present Woodturning: Functional Craft to Decorative Art, featuring forty original artworks created by artists from the Seattle Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. The exhibi-tion showcases the variety of items that can be made using a wood lathe. Pieces range from tradi-tional salad bowls, furniture pieces, pens, and pepper mills, to decorative art pieces made with seg-mented wood, or embellished with color, carving, burning, or other enhancement techniques.

Seattle Woodturners is a non-profit, local chapter of the national American Association of Woodturners (AAW) and is celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2017. The Chapter’s mission is to “inform and educate the public about woodturning as a traditional and contemporary craft and art form, and to foster a wider understanding and appreciation of woodturning among the general pub-lic, hobbyist, part-time turners, and professional turners. This is accomplished by providing educa-tion, information, organization, technical assistance, and publications relating to woodturning.”

The Seattle Woodturners are a social group with a sincere interest in promoting the art and craft of woodturning within our community. The public is welcome to attend a Monthly Meeting held the second Thursday of each month at the VFW Facility located in Redmond.

Visit https://seattlewoodturners.org/ for more information.

Through BAM's Community Education exhibitions, we celebrate and nurture the community by fea-turing student work and exhibits that promote educational enrichment and cultural awareness. The Community Education Gallery is open during regular Museum hours and is free to the public.

Special Club Pricing on Powermatic 3520B Lathe As some of you have heard the Powermatic 3520B lathe is being replace with the 3520C model. Along with the model change will be a $500 price increase.

Our friends and club sponsors Equipment Sales and Surplus have purchased the remaining inventory of 3520Bs Powermatic had in their warehouse. They will be offering them at a substantial discount to members of the Seattle Woodturners. They have asked us not to publish the exact price but it will be under $3200.

If you are interested in purchasing one of these lathes and taking advantage of this offer contact:

Equipment Sales and Surplus, 1801 West Valley Highway N, Auburn, WA 98001 253-804-3211

You will need to show your membership card to get the special pricing.

A Board Member can provide the exact pricing of these machines for club members.

Sawdust Sessions/Workshop Location Needed In January going forward the club will need a new location to hold Sawdust Sessions and Workshops. The location will need to handle up to 10 lathes and turners comfortably. Ideally we will have multiple locations we can rotate between.

If you are aware of suitable location contact Andy Firpo.

Ornament Workshops Several club members took part in the John Moe/Hal Johnson Ornament Workshop at John Moe’s shop. This year John and Hal were assisted by Tom Johansen and Gary Clarke.

Members who attended the workshop used a home-made hollowing tool to create stunning hollow ornaments and as a bonus took home the hollowing tool after the event.

We should see some examples of their work in this months Show-N-Tell.

Donations Several members have donated to the club. We thank those members for their donations.

Many companies in the Seattle area match charitable donations. Some match the time spent on charity work with a generous hourly rate. As you participate in club charitable activities (Bead of Courage, Empty Bowls, Tops for the KIDSfair) and as a club volunteer (Web Site, Audio, Trailer Puller, etc) we encourage you to sub-mit this time so the club has the resources to expose a wider audience to woodturning.

SmileAmazon.com: Shopping at SmileAmazon.com, instead of Amazon.com, gives you the same products and prices. SmileAmazon.com will donate .5% of your qualifying purchases to Seattle Woodturners if you designate our Chapter as your charitable organization.
