Artist’s StatementThe “fresco photographs” that define my work are created by superimposing multi-dimensional photographic images of Renaissance and Ancient architecture, sculptural details, illumination and the natural form, which are intertwined with crumbling walls and rich sur-faces. My creative impulse is to develop multiple perspectives, and get inside the beauty of decay, deep within the crackling surfaces, monumental lines and sculptural curves, peering through the veil of the apparent, going beyond our preconceived notions to use our imagination in the quest of a new way of seeing.

Exploring the world has been part of my artistic persona. My family left New York, where I was born, and crossed the country to fulfill the dream to live in California. After a decade this adventurous spirit was still in evidence as we moved to London during my adoles-cence. I then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, and, after graduate school, spent a year in Santa Fe, where my passion for photog-raphy began to grow and take shape. Since 1995 my career as a fine-art photographer has been based in Rome.

Italy has been the inspiration for my work. I aim to capture the light and grandeur, yet at the same time honor the imperfections, the grit, the reality of degeneration. My explorations have focused on Rome, Venice, and the Italian countryside, but Istanbul, Paris, New York, and various other places are also in the picture. My photographic palette is attuned to the stratified depths of my surroundings. Whether wiith the rich tones of terracotta or the more subtle monochromatic hues of misty blues and greens, I create overlays to cap-ture the timeless beauty of hilltowns, sacred sites, and old world cities. Each monument, cityscape or natural element remains integral, but their textured patinas and sensual contours fuse into a multi-dimentional tapestry in which they are juxtaposed and merged with varying degrees of opacity and translucence. These age-old elements evoke the inextricable link of the fragile and the eternal.

Angels, Goddesses and the Spirit of Italy

The eternal spirit lives amongst the streets of Rome and all throughout Italy. You can see it in the grandeur of the statues and angels that hover above us. Ageless, timeless, breathless. Standing on the Ponte Sant’Angelo across from the castle with a row of Bernini figures towering over the bridge -- it seems to put one’s size, age and relevance in perspective. I look upward waiting for a bird to spread its wings at the same angle as my chosen angel. Pazienza is what is required, waiting patiently for the light, allowing things to come to you in their own time. I wander into a cloister and I’m moved by a dreaming female with sculpted hair, tears on her tranquil visage, and to the hill town of Frascati, into the secret gardens of Villa Aldobrandini, transfixed by the exposed, exquisite feminine form, with folded robes barely covering her. It is the respect for the age-less beauty that reminds me to focus on what is real, what is substantial enough to endure. This propels me to try and create something that speaks to the height, depth and breath of these elements, and to take notice of the angels and goddesses that surround us.

Capturing the Timelessness of Venice & the Italian Countryside

In Italy not only are there are civilizaitions that have lived beneath the surface, with millennia of ruins buried underground, but also in the environment surrounding us: from the patina of the walls to the antiquity of the 2000 year old olive groves, offering a marvelous landscape from which to create new depth and innovative interpretation.

Strolling along the canals in the mist of dawn or at the golden hour of dusk, mesmerized by the myriad reflections, I am transported to a place where cars do not exist, boats abound, and water rules. Hearing the sound of the click, clacking of human movements over quaint bridges, the church bells ringing, I go up and down over the curved stairs and through the maze. Then suddenly an opening, a view of the Grand Canal appears. Bursting forth, as if to say, “Wake Up World”, listen. I do not know how long I will be here, so pay attention, find the magic in this moment.

As if life in all its splendor and decay were one, there to be absorbed, begging you not to turn away, but to accept that we will not be here forever, that demise could be around the corner. We must play at the art of life. Explore, take in the vistas, adorn yourself with whatever costume or creation fits your soul’s yearning, maneuver the unchar-tered labyrinth with as much grace as you can find, get involved in that which you love, become the artist within, get lost and then find yourself -- discover a greater depth of feeling and purpose that resonates with your own creative vision. Look for the beauty, the spark, the mystery of life.

It has always been my artistic challenge and purpose to inspire others to view La Citta’ Eterna in a new way -- to portray her ancient beauty and authenticity, to reveal her infinite depth, so that one can touch her texture, feel her glow, be in her presence. After almost two decades of roaming the back alleys and hidden treasures of Rome I can still turn a corner and be surprised by her architectural genius, the shape of her arches and cupolas and the sheer inconceivable notion that she still stands, sometimes in ruins, with her intensely hued crumbling walls, and her stratified depth of being. Whether I am shooting from a rickety old city bus out the gritty window toward the Colosseum in a torrential rainstorm, or from the tranquility of the terrace of the Belgian Ambassador’s residence overlooking the Forum, I feel blessed as I continue my endeavor to capture this enchanting city while finding and exposing the most unique, multi-dimensional perspective as possible.

Still Life & Nature / Fruits & Vegetables

These photographs are a study of texture, shape and color. Using fruit and vegetables as symbolic gestures, I endeavor to transform the freshness and exquisite beauty of the natural gifts I partake in everyday into representations of form as well as substance. The intricate design of the artichoke, the sweet richness of the tomato, the brilliant deli-cacy of the zucchini flower, the fresh zest of the lemon, and the essential boldness of the garlic and hot peppers all contribute to a deep, fulfilling Italian scene. A still life, yes, but also a vivid sensation that speaks of an entire culture, turning culinary passion into art and truly honoring those things that grow and sustain us.

This series was shown at the Paolo Antonacci Gallery and at the American Embassy in Rome.

Architecture, Illumination and the Human Form - This exhibition would include a combination of photographic bodies of work that have already been developed as well as contemporary works in progress.

Shades of White

Without abandoning my original signature “fresco photography” style, with this body of work I am exploring new dimensions of light, shadow and space. I have been influ-enced by abstract figurative painting, as I experiment with the depths of more subtle monochromatic hues and delicate white-on-white images.

I reach to make visible the absence that takes me deeper inside, to a meditative, dreamlike, sensual place -- to the openness and color of empty space. My aim is to convey a contemporary, visually poetic interpretation, with neutral textural surfaces juxtaposed with an overlay of shape, form, contour, architectural line and sensual, scuptural curves, allowing each to emerge beneath the surface.

Across America

Although I grew up in various places in America -- from New York to California, with a sojourn in Santa Fe, I have chosen to live in Italy for nearly 20 years, and perhaps with this long range perspective, I view my native country through a nostalgic, romantic lens. I seek to express the surreal, ephemeral, transcendent state I often experience while taking photographs. More of an observer than an insider, nevertheless my heart still feels firmly rooted in this wide open land.

My purpose is to capture the wonders of America and to preserve its genius, diversity, and myriad impressions, to show reverence for and share the juxtaposition of its cities, seas, mountains and deserts. Perhaps I include the softness of the green-blue elements, like the ocean that surrounds us, to tie together the immensity of the New York skyline, the magic of the Golden Gate, the whimsy of the Florida coastline, the brilliance of the Colorado mountains and the architectural ingenuity of a railway station in DC. and surreal bareness of the New Mexican desert on fire.

I reflect on the sun’s rays on low lying clouds, examining the landscape and cityscape as if I were a child in wonder -- and still, with a familiarity that remains and gives me the inspiration to continue on my adventure. These wonders speak of soft blue dawns and misty twilights, aquatic horizons, abandonment and freedom, connected by strong bridges, railways, and endless skies, with the scent of fog and smoke and radiant sea air. The challenge is always to find a place of stillness and focus while on the road -- to bring new meaning, depth and expression to these iconic, yet majestic landmarks, as I share this journey across America.

Large-Scale Collage Installations

The ancient walls and rich surfaces, combined with the fresco photography, are superimposed with multi-dimensional photographic images that create large-scale collages. Shown here are close-up views of the warm-hued “Roman Collage,” which include three-hundred and twenty unique images, primarily of crackling walls, interspersed with “fresco photographs” of Roman monuments and statues. The first of this limited edition series has been acquired by Rome Luxury Suites’ new boutique hotel, Babuino 35, lo-cated near the Spanish Steps. This particular collage measures eight meters long and is mounted on aluminum backing with a protective coating and inlaid in the wall of their lobby. The cooler hued collage, “Italian Blue Shapes,” depicts the blue and green elements of Rome and Southern Italy.
