    introduction

    Contemplating Lolita - Our Global Artistby Dominique Gallego, Manila, Philippines

    You should follow the wind of life, says LolitaValderrama Savage, describing one of her top threefavorite paintings, Call of the Wind (a gentlywindswept European landscape) and her lifephilosophy.

    After finishing her Fine Arts degree from theUniversity of Santo Tomas (Philippines) in the 70s, thewind whisked Lolita to Florence where she studiedpainting at the Accademia di Belle Arti as an Italiangovernment scholar, cutting short a budding teachingcareer at U.S.T. Today, her paintings grace private andcorporate collections in many parts of the globe.

    At three and a half years old, Lolita attached herself todrawing, my mother would pacify me with a pencil andpaper and Id be at peace for the next ten hours. In herhigh school yearbook, she officially pronounced thatshed be a painter. Nature would eventually become herchoice model. Growing up in Manila, she often stared

  • 8at the sky, pondering about heaven. When visiting Bulacan, she always played in the mangoorchards and picked fruit straight off the trees. She looked forward to trips to La Union whereshe could be close to the beach and she relished the adventure of finding giant snakes in IlocosNorte while wandering the farmlands.

    She fondly remembers the Fernando Amorsolo paintings depicted in the San Miguelcorporation calendars they had at home. She loved the idyllic rural scenes with beautifulwomen, I imagined myself as one of them. As for Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion-Hidalgo,they inspired her to visit other countries and reinforced her belief that the Filipino artist couldbe as good, if not better, than artists from Western Europe or any part of the world. Jose Rizalis, however, her biggest hero. Im amazed at all he did in such a limited periodhe inspiredme to learn as many languages as I could. Global yet local, Lolita says, I love my country. Itake my country with me wherever I go. You cant fail when you take your country with youbecause youre not just failing yourself.

    Lolitas mentor, the well-respected Italian painter Silvio Loffredo (who himself was mentoredby the great Expressionist Oskar Kokoschka), describes Lolitas landscapes as creating a littleparadisean open gentle world that one will always remember. In Lolitas words, when youcommune with nature, you can reflect about existence and ask why youre here.

    From Italy, the wind transported Lolita to Sweden where she studied with the Swedish painterStaffan Hallstrom (whose works form part of NYCs Museum of Modern Art collection). WhySweden? Her Scandinavian friends convinced her that nature was more captivating there.Lolita stayed in Eskilstuna (a town about an hour away from Stockholm) where she would walkto the woods everyday to paint and sometimes get lost, it s wonderful to be lost! Lolita didntthink shed stay in Sweden for several years but she did because of the peace of pure nature

    (her Scandinavian friends were apparently right). Two of her top three favorite paintings areof Sweden - one in winter (a snow-blessed rural landscape with a series of Stugor or red cabinsin the far distance) and Path to the Woods (a lush summer forest scene with a path evokingmystery which I mistook for some tropical place; a souvenir of her days in Eskilstuna). Amongnatures blessings, she also favors the sunset when the perfectly round sun tears itself awayfrom the passionate embrace of the clouds causing fire as it descends to kiss the silent horizon.

    Lolitas sister, for many years, had failed to convinceher to move to the United States. Sweden was thenLolitas home but love (for husband Frank Savage)was the wind that eventually transported her to theU.S. Lolita recalls that a married musician friendadvised, if you want to be a real artist, dont getmarried. If you choose marriage, youll lose yourart. For Lolita, however, marriage and art wereboth vocations. I just felt I had to respond to thosetwo calls. It wasnt impossible. Contrary to whatmy friend thought, it enriched my life. Thirtyyears and three grown-up children later, it swonderful that Frank mentions (offhand) that oneof his favorite paintings by Lolita is the very sameSwedish winter landscape that Lolita selected asone of her three favorites (loving hearts do thinkalike!). Lolitas art is also an integral part of herchildrens lives. She recalls that when one of hersons was quite small and she was packing off apainting to a buyer, he was very distressed. Herdaughter is an actress and I believe Lolitas art hasalso inspired her. Lolita admits that, even today, allher children are still a bit possessive of herpaintings. She makes it seem so effortless, raisingthree children (American style - no reliance onmultiple live-in yayas!) while being the perfectcorporate wife to a global businessman and making

    sure to paint. Any woman who balances similar things knows its far from effortless.

    Lolita's favorite medium is oil on canvass although she does wonderful watercolors and penand ink too. She has also experimented with portraiture. Her style is Impressionistic (despitethe fact that her mentors were influenced by Expressionism) and very tactile (her paintings areeye candy, you want to touch them). When you meet her, youll instantly recognize the samepositive (ranging from restful to very vibrant) energy her paintings convey. My favorite paintingis LAutomne a Roussillon which reminds me of Albert Camus words, in the midst of winter,I have found within me an invincible summer.

    Lolita first exhibited in 1975 in Florence, Italy. Shes also the first Filipina to have lived andpainted in Scandinavia and to have had a solo exhibition in Stockholm. Her paintings havebeen exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the U.K. and at the World EconomicForum in Davos, Switzerland. She has also been sponsored by the Commune of Florence toexhibit at the Museum of Dante Alighieri. She has also ventured to the North Pole to draw.

    I asked if she ever doubted her art, why should I? Its like doubting my existence. I and myart are one. To Lolita, artists are born not made and painting means exercising a gift, a giftto be shared, something to give joy and that must be useful and beneficial to others. Lolitaacknowledges that she and Frank have been blessed and because of this she has utilized her artto help others. She first became actively involved in charities while her children were in schooland noticed that fundraising was always a big challenge. So for many years now, she has usedher art to help raise funds for needy children, public education and entities that support artistslike the Foundation for Filipino Artists, Inc. As an admirer of St. Francis of Assisi, she remindsme, its better to give than to receive.

    She dedicates her paintings not only to family and friends but also to the universal force thatunites us together to learn about, understand, and love one another, through the beauty of art.She plans to continue creating and helping others. She hopes that she can inspire and helpyoung artists to dare to dream and allow themselves to be carried by the wind of life.

    LOLITA VALDERRAMA SAVAGE is a lover and painter of Nature. She believes that inthe basic expressions and manifestations of its reality,Nature awakens the simple and humble place of thehuman being in the expanse of this Universe.

    Born in Manila, Philippines, Lolita received herdegree in Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Royal andPontifical University of Santo Tomas, the oldestCatholic university in Asia founded in 1611. In1973, she was granted a scholarship by the ItalianMinistry of Foreign Affairs to study at theAccademia di Belle Arti in Florence where shereceived her Licenza in Pittura. Lolita's firstinternational group art exhibit was presented at thePalazzo Strozzi in 1975, followed by many one-woman and group art shows in Italy and Swedenwhere she lived until her move to USA in 1980. Shenow lives and paints in New York City, Stamford,CT, and Florence Italy, actively continuing to exhibitin Europe and Asia. Lolita attributes her artisticlearning and discipline to Professor Silvio Loffredoof the Accademia and her former Swedish mentor,the late Staffan Hallstrom.

    Lolita's commitment to art is combined with her passion for languages, diverse cultures, and adedication to humanitarian causes. She worked at the United Nations and is actively involvedin local and international organizations. As a member of the Board of Directors of StamfordArt Association, she chaired the First Scholarship Benefit Art Auction in l987 and again in1989 to provide scholarships to young talented artists in Stamford and neighboring communityschools in Fairfield County. Lolita also chaired the First International Cultural Festival for theWestover Magnet School in Stamford in 1991, a week long celebration of cultural heritageswhich aim was to stimulate awareness, sensitivity, better understanding and tolerance of allcultures present in our community. She served as judge for Black History Celebration'sStamford Schools' Art Competition at the Stamford Center for the Arts and supported othercommunity organizations like The Forum for World Afffairs, Stamford Historical Society,Alliance Francaise YWCA of Greenwich, The Urban League of Southwestern Connecticut,and served on the boards of The Friends of the Ferguson Library and the Stamford CulturalDevelopment Corporation.

    Presently, Lolita serves as Honorary Chairperson for The Foundation for Filipino Artists, Inc,and as board member for the MA-YI Theater Company, two non-profit organizations whichpromote asian-american art and artists in New York City. In Connecticut, she serves on theboard of Namaskaar Foundation, promoting Indian and international dance and music andThe ThumbelinaFund for Children of the Fairfield County Community Foundation. Lolitais a member of the American International League, L'Associazione Culturale Giovanni Papinidi Firenze, and the Societa delle Belle Arti, Circolo degli Artisti at Casa di Dante in Florence,Italy.

    In 1987, Lolita was selected as an outstanding woman of America in recognition of heroutstanding ability, accomplishments and service to the community. In 1997, her art exhibition

    at the Stamford Center for the Arts was held to benefit the needy children of Connecticut. In1999, she was awarded an official citation from the State of Connecticut for her work in thearts and community affairs for creating awareness of high level of culture and education inFairfield County. Lolita was presented among the 125 Significant Women of Influence inStamford by the Historical Society in that same year. In 2012, she received the Totus TuusAward and the The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award in Visual Arts from her almamater, the University of Santo Tomas in Manila.

    Lolita was one of the chosen international artists invited to exhibit at the prestigious WorldEconomic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in 1999. Later, she was presented in a month long soloexhibition at the CASA DI DANTE ALIGHIERI in the historic center of Florence sponsoredby the Comune di Firenze and the Philippine Embassy in Rome, Italy. In 2006, after an exhibitin Paris, France, she participated in the "Art for Peace" auction at the Victoria & AlbertMuseum in London, for the benefit of students at Atlantic College in Wales. In her own words:"creating art has taken me up to a new level because it has enabled me to help children, promoteeducation, and bring people together to forge friendship and cultural cooperation".

    In 2011, after 38 years, Lolita went back to Manila to exhibit in her native country's two majorart museums, the AYALA Museum and the University of Santo Tomas Museum of Scienceand Art. Her recent exhibit was held in December 2013 to January 2014 at the Palazzo MediciRiccardi, the former residence of the Medici Family, the great patron of Renaissance Arts.

    Lolita is multi-lingual, apart from her native tongue Tagalog, she was formally trained to speakEnglish, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Norwegian, French and German. She is married to FrankSavage a mother to Fredrik Antoine, Grace Erlinda, and Frank Alexander.

    The world is a canvass for our imagination. To Ms. Lolita Savage theworld in not merely that it is where all the beauty and complexitiesof human life are reflected. Her works transcend physical aesthetics;they illustrate the underlying intricacies of nature and the sentimentsof a passionate spirit. Being an artist she uses her talents to create artand paved her way to help young aspiring artists, promote education,forge friendship, and establish cultural cooperation.

    A lover of nature, she strives to capture the soul of her surroundings ina canvass, a task that takes passion, skill, and sensibility. She beganpracticing her love of art after she graduated from the University ofSanto Tomas (UST) with the degree of Fine Arts. Her status as aglobally known artist took off when she was granted a scholarship bythe Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She was starting teaching hercareer in UST when she was given the scholarship. Because of thisgrant, she was able to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence,Italy in 1973.

    It was from the guiding hands of Professors Silvio Loffredo and Staffan Hallstrom that Ms.Savage secured her knowledge of artistic practices. Able to elevate her fine skills, she attainedher Licenza in Pittura, a licentiate in fine arts. The very first time she displayed her art in anexhibition is at the Palazzo Strozzi. She was one of the artists in an international group thatheld the exhibition. Following this first success, Ms. Savage was also featured in several one-woman shows in different parts of Europe. In fact, she was the first Filipino who held anexhibition at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi and Casa di Dante. In 1999, she was acknowledgedas one of the eight globally admired artists awarded at the World Economic Forum inSwitzerland.

    With her exquisite talent and an eye for the beauty of nature, she became an internationallyrecognized fine artist. For 40 years, she exhibited her artworks internationally in the USA,Europe, and Asia delighting art lovers across the world. Using her artistic talents, she becamethe first Filipino woman to have exhibited art works in Sweden, Italy, and Switzerland. Manybeholders claim that the nostalgic landscapes she paints embody vivacious emotions of natureand life itself.

    It was in 2011 when her artistry was witnessed by her fellow Filipinos when she finally heldan exhibit in the Philippines after 38 years of living abroad. Her art was displayed in two majormuseums, the Ayala Museum in Makati and the UST Museum of Science and Art in Manila.Her excellence in painting also allowed her to be conferred the Totus Tuus Award and TheOutstanding Thomasian Alumni Award by her alma mater, the UST in 2011, OutstandingWomen of America in 1987, and citations from the State of Connecticut for her contributionsin the arts and community affairs.

    Hailing from Manila where she grew up marveling at the sky, Ms. Savages love for nature wasnurtured by her visits to provinces such as Bulacan, La Union, and Ilocos Norte. However, it

    was Fernando Amorsolos paintings printed on calendars that captivated her and nourished herfondness for nature.

    Although with intrinsic penchant for the arts, she developed her taste from distinguishedFilipino artists such as Leonardo Hidalgo and Diosdado Lorenzo of the University of SantoTomas. With potential seen in Ms. Savage, her mentors stretched her imagination and shapedher ideals with Filipino artistry. She was also inspired by the works of Juan Luna and Felix-Resurreccion-Hildago. To her, their achievements are a testament to Filipinos ability tocompete globally. Still, Ms. Savage looks up Jose Rizal as the ultimate hero, not only in history,but also in the arts.

    Ms. Savages involvement in many different fields is reflected in her endeavors to portray natureas it is. Aside from painting, she also appreciates the beauty of language. She obtained formaltraining in Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Norwegian, French, and German. The multiplicity ofcultures, languages, and colors led her to visually and verbally express her art more effectively.

    Ms. Savage is not only engaged in the arts. Dedicating her life to many volunteer works, artauctions, and donations, she contributes the proceeds to different international organizationsto benefit communities especially those affected by natural disasters. Working closely as a boardmember with different non-profit organizations such as MA-YI Theatre Company, NamaskaarFoundation-World on Stage, Thumbelina Fund, Stamford Art Association, and the Casa diDante Circolo delgi Artisti, she promotes diversity in the arts and helps fund scholarships foryoung artists.

    Inspired by her passion to exhibit the serenity of nature, it is truly evident that Ms. Savagesuccessfully touched the hearts of foreigners and traversed cultural boundaries. Herimpressionistic technique, characterized by buoyant hues, challenges spectators to view theworlds landscapes with much more depth, intensity, and ultimately, a deeper understanding.

    Serendipity - I first encountered Lolita Valderrama Savagethrough a painting in the dining room of an art collector whosecollection included Matisses and Picassos. I was both stunned andpleased to discover that the artist was Filipina. Lolita's artisticjourney began when she was a very young child. She didn't chooseto be an artist. She knew instinctively it was her destiny. She couldspend hours at a time drawing and her mother allowed her thispleasure. Lolita studied Fine Arts at the University of SantoTomas, the oldest university in the Philippines, where she hadaccess to the art of Philippine masters. After UST, Lolita studiedin Florence, Italy as a pioneering Italian government scholar atthe Accademia di Belle Arti and Sweden with Staffan Hallstromto further hone her techniques and immerse herself in the workof European masters and popular contemporary artists.     husband and nurturing three lovely and accomplishedchildren, she manages to carve out highly cherished time tolose herself - in creativity, in a particular locality, in theintensity of the present to capture the beauty of what shebeholds on canvass. Lolita prides herself in being a fineartist. Having been trained in the traditional paintingtechniques of the masters, sheenjoys the hard work of paintinglike them, while personalizingthese techniques with her ownvision of the world.

    To see Lolitas paintings is tomeet her - up close and personal.Lolita entrusts a piece of hersoul to each painting. Each worksubtly mirrors her. Her children- as they were growing up - wereoften possessive of her work.Children are sensitive to thesethings. Whenever one of Lolita'scollectors acquired a painting, her children always feltcertain sadness - as if part of Lolita was going on a one waytrip, to be lost forever.     water you draw, the more abundant its flow." So it is with Lolita's persona embedded in herart. Painting is part of her being. Her dedication to artistry reflects true love as she continuesto paint with inexhaustible energy. Every collector who acquires Lolita's work merely partakesin limitless joy shared by her family, friends and other collectors - nothing is taken away fromher loved ones.

    The visual artist can often be limited by personal biases and cultural predispositions. Theselimits saturate the artist's work and make the work less comprehensible to a wide audience.Lolita's work is special as her art contemplates a global consciousness - influenced by her own

Forexample, Lolita's paintings feature landscapes that can be appreciated anywhere by people fromall walks of life. They invite the viewer to quiet time, to calmness and contemplation.Sometimes, they invite the viewer to imagine stories. One favorite Roussillon Tree (1994) -depicts a tree in the sheer splendor of autumn and reflects such an exuberant burst of energythat one can imagine Romeo recklessly declaring his love for Juliette underneath the treesbranches. Another favorite French Forest (1981) evokes the dreamy magic of fairy taleswhere one can imagine the uneven, remote landscape as part of an ancient kingdom whoseleader recently triumphed in a battle over evil. Lolita paints evocative figures as well, such asthe Knitting Lady of Iceland (1980); the woman could be anyones no-nonsense grandmother,at peace with herself and the world. Lolitas paintings simultaneously reflect tranquility andcolor. Her brush strokes evoke subtle but constant movement - strokes reflective of Lolitasown life journey. Lolita uses a bright color palate. Her paintings, like her, resonate with anirrepressible optimism combined with serenity. Her paintings are as appealing as colorful candyto a child holding her mothers hand.

    The artist and the viewer may have different interpretations of aparticular work. One could look at Lolitas paintings and simplyappreciate the world tour from Philippine farmlands, to Florentinegardens, the American northeast, the Scandinavian forests, and manyother places. One could look at them as an invitation to bask in thewarm, tropical sun, to explore the mysterious forest pathways or tosimply reflect on being, the beauty of nature and how nature itself isthe artist's ideal. From the hopeful light of daytime scenes to the placidsunset seascapes, beach frolickers and a knitting grandmother, the thesisof beauty as part of life and nature, from beginning to end, resonates.

    From my first encounter with Lolitas painting, I have been fortunateto meet Lolita in person and view more of her art. The openness, peaceand optimism of Lolita's paintings indeed reflect her. I wholeheartedlyagree with Saint-Exupery and hope that many will have the opportunityto see Lolita and her work at the LArte di Lolita Valderrama-Savage,Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Via Cavour 1, Florence, Italy, from December3, 2013 (6 p.m.) through January 2, 2014 and partake of the joy herwork brings family, friends and existing collectors.

    I shall begin by saying that the paintings of Lolita Valderramawhich are mainly dedicated to landscapes can be decipheredimmediately.

    In effect, every angle of her landscape is slowly and conscientiouslystudied with the appropriate expressive mediums. She uses cleartones of blue and green, manipulating her subjects with greatcare.

    Everything is revealed in a candid spirit that one cannot forget,in a climate of solitude linked to a sentiment of identity with thevery essence of reality.

    On canvas, she creates her little paradise which she perceives withher colorful eyes. It is an open and gentle world that one willalways remember.

    She is humble, a rare quality and has faith. She works withtenacity and this is how I have always known her.

    Her paintings, modulated and loved, relate a story consecrated tocontemplation .....for a silent meditation.

  • ARTIST'S STATEMENT

    Art is a natural gift which I have been fortunate toreceive. It has given me the extraordinary ability toexpress the most beautiful human feelings and sentimentsthat one could ever experience and share with otherhuman beings.

    Art is a vehicle that has taken me thousands of miles awayfrom my place of origin to foreign lands enabling me toacquire deep knowledge, understanding, and sensitivityto the uniqueness of every country, landscapes its peopleand its culture.

    My painting has brought me so much joy that its purposehas now taken multiple meanings in my life. Art has mademe realize that this talent, unique in an individual, maybe further enhanced from its sole purpose of personalexpression into becoming an instrument for findingsolutions to achieve humanitarian progress.

    In my recent exhibitions, creating art has takem me up toa new level because it has enabled me to help children,promote education and bring people together to forgefriendships and cultural cooperation.

    As I paint NATURE my favorite subject, I see reflected inthe colors of breathing landscapes all the beauty andcomplexities of human life....then comes the power ofinspiration running through my veins, my soul, and myhands.
