Welcome, I am proud to present in this catalogue a selection of our current stock.Beautiful and interesting clocks chosen for their authenticity and quality.Fine examples of the collaboration between clockmakers, cabinet makers andengravers to produce articles of mechanical excellence and great beauty.

The clockmakers who made these clocks, working predominately in London at theend of the 17th century and throughout the 18th century were exceptional. Somecame from families of clockmakers, some were Masters of The Clockmakers’Company, some were clockmakers to the Royal Families and held the position ofKeeper of the Clocks in Royal Palaces. Some made technological advancements inthe field of horology. Examples of clocks by many of these makers can be seen in The Science Museum, The British Museum and in great collections around the worldincluding Royal Collections.

Prized and valued today as they were when first commissioned and made, theseclocks represent a sound financial investment yet will also be a pleasure to own andincorporate into your daily life. They measure time, the hours, the minutes thatmake up our lives and mark our pivotal moments as well as the larger historic eventswhich change history and take us in new directions.

I have worked with clocks for my entire career,from beginning at my grandfather’s bench, to thepresent day, running my own establishedbusiness, dealing internationally fromshowrooms in the Cotswolds. I serve on the BADAAntiques & Fine Art Fair Clock Vetting Committeeas well as being an advisor on the Antique ClockConservation course at West Dean College andnever cease to be fascinated and delighted byclocks. There is always another clock to find, a surprise to be uncovered, a new link to be made,centuries old work to be admired and knowledgeto be shared.

Jonathan Puller was born circa1662 and apprenticed toNicholas Coxeter, being passedover to John Miller on Coxeter'sdeath in 1679. He was madeFree of the Clockmakers'Company in September 1683and over the next 24 years of hiscareer he is recorded as havingemployed eight apprentices. Hewas made Assistant in 1701 andattended Court until 1707, whenhe is presumed to have died.

The style of the movement withthe baluster movement pillarsare all reminiscent of the workof Joseph Knibb. The likeness isattributed to Puller's master,John Miller d.1702, who wasapprenticed first to SamuelKnibb d.1670 and then boundover to Joseph Knibb d.1711.The few surviving examples ofJohn Miller's work have a Knibbstyle and it is probable thatsome of the Knibb influencerubbed off on his ownapprentice.

The National Trust have a finesilver mounted table clock byJonathan Puller at MontacuteHouse in Somerset.

A fine William and Mary ebony table clock with elegant sixinch mercury gilt dial signed Jonathan Puller, London withsilvered chapter ring, finely matted centre, false pendulumaperture and calendar aperture. Beautifully sculpted bluedsteel hands and finely detailed winged cherub headspandrels, strike/silent lever above the XII. The eight daymovement with substantial plates, six latched balusterpillars and latched dial feet. Verge escapement with internalrack striking the hours on a bell, the backplate engravedwith wheatear borders enclosing daffodils and tulips amongfoliate scrolls with cartouche signed Jonathan PullerLondini Fecit. The ebony veneered case surmounted by agilt thistle bud handle above the cushion moulded topflanked by four finials. The front and rear door with giltwinged cherubs head escutcheons, the top rail to the frontdoor with pierced ebony sound fret.

A William III quarter repeating table clock. The seven inchsquare brass dial has a strike/silent lever above the XII,cherubs head spandrels and a silvered chapter ring signedMarkwick London. The matted centre has a false pendulumaperture, decorated date aperture and ringed winding holes.The eight day, six pillar movement has a verge escapement,strikes the hours on a bell and is pull quarter repeating onsix further bells. The finely engraved backplate has astanding figure amid foliate scrolls. The ebonised bell topcase has a double scroll handle, glazed side panels andpierced foliate mounts to the front door.

James Markwick senior was apprenticed to Edward Gilpinin June 1656 and freed in 1666. In September 1677 he wasfined by the Clockmakers’ Company for abuse of the Masterat the Stewards’ Feast at which he was a Steward. In 1673he succeeded Mr Samuel Betts deceased at Back of RoyalExchange. In May 1686 he refused to pay a fine for absencefrom the Clockmakers’ Company court and left 'in a abruptand angry manner'. He became Assistant in 1682 but from1691 attended very irregularly, was repeatedly cautionedand after 1700 he ceased to attend at all. He worked upuntil 1706.

James Markwick junior was made free by patrimony, that isby virtue of his father's existing freedom, in April 1692. He was made Assistant in 1716, Warden in 1717 and Masterin 1720.

The Victoria and Albert Museum have a fine silver andtortoiseshell pocket watch by James Markwick in theircollection.

WILLIAM TOMLINSON

A William & Mary marquetry longcase clock of excellentcolour and patination. The 11 inch square dial has cheruband flower spandrels with tulip engraving between them.The well matted centre with ringed winding holes, a secondsring and ringed date aperture. Blued steel hands. The eightday, six pillar movement with inside countwheel striking thehours on a bell.

The bird and flower marquetry case has a flat top hood witha pierced fret, ebonised spiral pillars and glazed sideapertures. The trunk door has an oval lenticle, the floralmarquetry in three panels incorporates birds. The basewhich is similarly decorated rests on replacement ebonisedbun feet.

Height 6ft 8ins (203 cm)

William Tomlinson was a fine maker and is first recorded asbecoming a brother of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1699 at26 years of age. It is interesting to note that Charles Gretton,Joseph Windmills and Thomas Tompion were present.Thirty four years later Tomlinson became Master of theClockmakers’ Company on the 29 September 1733. He worked at The Dial & Three Crowns, Birchin Lane, near Royal Exchange. William Tomlinson was a Quaker andlived near the important clockmaker and fellow QuakerDaniel Quare.

JOSEPH WINDMILLS

A fine Queen Anne ebonised table clock with pullquarter repeat. The seven inch gilt brass dialsigned Joseph Windmills London to the shallowarch with a strike/silent function lever below.Silvered chapter ring with half hour markers.The centre of the dial is finely matted and has achamfered false pendulum aperture withengraved background and cherub spandrels tothe four corners. Blued steel hands. Thesubstantial five pillar movement has its originalverge escapement and is pull quarter repeatingon five bells, striking the hours on a separatebell. The backplate is signed Joseph WindmillsLondon within a foliate cartouche amongstfinely engraved foliage.

The ebonised case has a shallow bell top withbrass carrying handle, finely pierced ebonysound frets to the front and rear doors withfoliate cast brass escutcheons and original brassrepousse mounts to the side apertures.

Joseph Windmills is recorded as a very fineclockmaker. He worked in St Martins Le Grandand in 1702 was appointed Master of theClockmakers’ Company. White enamel dials werereserved for the highest qualityclocks due to their high cost.This clock displays influence ofbracket clocks made by ThomasMudge and William Dutton atthe end of the 18th century. It isunusual for a clock of thisquality to be signed by a makeroutside London.

Looking at the Baddeley familyreveals them to be exceptional.Phineas Baddeley is recorded asapprenticed in July 1652 andadmitted to the Clockmakers’Company in 1661, at 21 years ofage. He subsequently worked inTong, Shropshire. The maker ofthis clock, John Baddeley ofAlbrighton, made a clock for thechurch in Tong. He also turnedhis attention to barometers andoptics inventing a new type ofrefraction telescope. On hisdeath in 1804 he was recordedas ‘Gent’ in the Parish Registerand commemorated by anunusual cast iron tomb inAlbrighton churchyard.

A relative, also called JohnBaddeley, was apprenticed tohis father in 1857 as a die sinkerin Hackney, London. This JohnBaddeley later became LordMayor of London and resided atMansion House.

Fine George III ebonised quarter repeating bracket clockwith its original bracket. The elegant break arch brass dialwith two white enamel subsidiary dials to the arch,regulation dial calibrated 0-60 on the right withstrike/silent dial on the left, separated by pierced gildedspandrels. A false pendulum aperture above is used to startthe clock without the need to turn it around to gain accessfrom the back. White enamel chapter with Roman numeralssigned Baddely Albrighton with pierced gilded spandrels tothe corners. The double fusee movement has thick plates,five large knopped pillars and a brass rod pendulumsuspended from a pivoted rise and fall arm with shapedcocks mounted on the backplate. Striking the hours on a bellwith pull quarter repeating mechanism on six further bells.The plain backplate with a hinged pendulum holdfast.

The ebonised break archcase has three raised padswith convex mouldings andbrass carrying handle,glazed side panels reveal themovement.

Thomas Mudge and WilliamDutton both served theirapprenticeships under thefamous George Graham,partner to Thomas Tompion. In 1755 Mudge and Duttonbecame partners at 148 FleetStreet, London.

Thomas Mudge then developedthe Lever Escapement for use inwatches and is regarded as oneof the greatest and mostinfluential watch and clockmakers of the period.

In 1771, William Dutton was leftto run the company whenThomas Mudge moved toPlymouth due to poor health.The partnership with ThomasMudge was not dissolved until1790. Both William Dutton andThomas Mudge died in 1794.

A fine George III mahogany drop dial wall timepiece with 131/2 inch silvered dial signed Thomas Mudge, WilliamDutton, London. Pierced blued steel, heart shaped hands.The substantial eight day movement has a half deadbeatescapement and heavy pendulum bob. The mahogany casewith cast brass bezel to the wooden surround. Elegantshaped ears to the drop box and shaped bottom openingdoor to allow access for pendulum adjustment.

A fine George III longcase clock with shallow ogee arch 12inch silvered dial with subsidiary seconds dial and calendaraperture signed William Dutton London. Strike/silent leverabove XII. The high quality, eight day, five pillar movementhaving substantial shouldered plates and Harrison’smaintaining power to keep the clock going during winding,striking the hours on a bell. Original steel rod pendulumwith large brass bob and graduated rating nut suspendedfrom the large backcock with roller suspension.

The flame figured mahogany case with ogee pediment andcanted fluted corners, long trunk door with well figured flameveneer and a raised panel to the base with double plinth.

William Dutton served his apprenticeship under the famousGeorge Graham in 1738 and finished his apprenticeship in1746 when he became a Freeman of the WorshipfulCompany of Clockmakers. In 1755 he became a partner tothe famous Thomas Mudge, another apprentice of GeorgeGraham, at 148 Fleet Street, London. This address was usedby the Dutton family for several generations. Williamentered the Livery of the Worshipful Company ofClockmakers in 1766.

A very fine George III ebonised bracket clock with elegantbreak arch silvered dial signed to the centre Dutton & SonsLondon with a subsidiary regulation dial calibrated 0-15 inthe arch allowing regulation without the need to turn theclock around to gain access from the back. A strike/silentselector above XII and false pendulum aperture to the dialcentre used to start the clock and a calendar aperture aboveVI. Fine blued steel hands. The exceptional double fuseemovement has thick plates and five large baluster pillars.The half dead beat escapement driving the steel rodpendulum with heavy brass faced bob suspended from thepivoted regulation platform mounted on top of the plates.The striking train has finely made motionwork and strikesthe hours on a bell. The plain backplate is signed Dutton & Sons London No. 206 with a hinged pendulum holdfastbelow. Three raised pads with concave mouldings to thebreak arch case with brass carrying handle, brass framedfront door and brass pad feet.

Around 1775, William took hissons into partnership and tradedas W Dutton & Sons, London, aswell as still trading as Mudge &Dutton. William had two sons,Matthew and Thomas.

Fine George III mahogany longcase regulator of smallproportions. The 9 1/2 inch silvered dial with shallow ogeearch having an outer minute ring enclosing the largesubsidiary seconds dial and an aperture hour dial signedAbel Panchaud London. Superb fine blued steel second andminute hands. The eight day movement with large plates hassix latched pillars, the four dial feet are also latched. Grahamdead beat pallets and six spoke crossings to the wheelwork.Bolt and shutter maintaining to keep the clock going duringwinding. Substantial pendulum bob with calibrated ratingnut and a very small brass cased driving weight.

The elegant mahogany case of lovely colour and patinahaving an Ellicott style pediment to the hood and cantedfluted corners. Long trunk door with well figured flameveneer and a raised panel to the base with double plinth.

Abel Panchaud was a clock and watchmaker in OxfordStreet, facing North Audley Street. The British Museumcollection has a trade card from Abel Panchaud showing twoChinese figures, one holding a watch. Donated by SarahBanks in 1818.

This clock is a rare examplehaving silent pallets, possiblyfor use in a bedroom at night,and a concealed rise-fallmechanism allowing regulationwithout the need to turn theclock around to gain accessfrom the back. It is beautifullycrafted via a rack mechanismabove the backcock.

ABEL PANCHAUD

A small George III ebonised bracket clock with whiteenamel dial signed Abel Panchaud Oxford Street withArabic hour numerals and blued steel hands. Concealed riseand fall regulation. The eight day, double fusee movementwith rare silent verge escapement, striking the hours on abell with a strike-silent facility which is mounted on thefinely engraved backplate. The small ebonised case witharch top and three brass bound pads with brass carryinghandle. Brass corners to the opening door having a castbrass bezel with convex glass and cast brass frets below.Brass fish scale frets to the sides and brass bracket feet.

A fine George III mahogany longcase regulator with 12 inchsquare silvered dial having an outer minute ring enclosingthe large subsidiary seconds dial and hour dial, signed PikeEltham with blued steel hands. The eight day movementdriven by a tiny brass cased weight has large plates with foursubstantial tapered pillars. Jewelled Graham dead beatescapement and Harrison’s maintaining power to keep theclock going during winding. Massive pendulum bob with giltwood rod and calibrated rating nut suspended from abracket mounted on the backboard. The exceptionalmahogany case of lovely colour and patina with anarchitectural pediment to the hood and reeded corners.Long trunk door with well figured flame veneer and a raisedpanel to the base with double plinth.

Height 6ft 7 ins (200 cm)

James Pike is recorded as a clock and watch maker alongwith running the Post Office in Eltham. He is also recordedas being a constable. He died in 1837 and was buried in theparish churchyard.

This clock displays influence by the work of Vulliamy, as seen in the tapered pillars similar to those used byVulliamy and the elegant architectural pediment associatedwith the longcase clocks made by the Vulliamy family.

Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy wasthe last in a line of exceptionalclockmakers and the last of hisillustrious family to hold theRoyal Clockmaker's Warrant.Born on the 25 January 1780, he spent most of his childhoodat 68 Pall Mall. He was apartner with his father, alsoBenjamin Vulliamy, andclockmaker to George IV,William IV and Queen Victoria.

Benjamin Lewis Vulliamyreceived the Freedom of theClockmakers’ Company inDecember 1809, became aliveryman in January 1810 atthe age of 30 and was admittedto the Court of Guild in the sameyear. There he served everyoffice in the Court and was fivetimes elected Master in 1821,1823, 1825, 1827 and 1847. His collection of books onhorology is in the Library of theInstitute of Civil Engineers.

VULLIAMY, No 651

A very fine small mahogany and ormolu mounted mantelclock with round silvered dial with the rare feature of dayand date to the centre, signed Vulliamy, London. Blued steelmoon hands and superb delicate gold hands for thecalendar. The high quality single chain fusee movementwith half dead beat escapement, Harrison’s maintainingpower to keep the clock going during winding and rise andfall adjustment above XII allowing regulation without theneed to turn the clock around to gain access from the back.Signed on the backplate Vulliamy, London and numbered651. Inside frontplate stamped Holmden London 302.Ebony wood rod pendulum. The mahogany and ebony casewith superb mercury gilded ormolu bezel cast as a serpentbiting its tail with ormolu eagle mount below.

The massive six pillar chain fusee movement ofsuperlative quality having tall plates with six screwed pillarsand latched dial feet. Half dead beat escapement, Harrison’smaintaining power to keep the clock going during winding,rise and fall regulation for the ebonised wood rod pendulumwith large brass bob numbered 1133. Superb foldingpendulum securing bracket mounted on the backplate signedVulliamy London and numbered 1133. The case of this clock is madefrom Ashford Black Marble. It isnot a true marble but a darklimestone quarried from minesnear Ashford-in-the-Water, inDerbyshire. Possibly influencedby the pietra dura made byFlorentine craftsmen in theDuke of Devonshire collectionat Chatsworth House, localcraftsmen made furniture andornaments inlaid with beautifulfloral designs using amongothers, Duke’s Red, malachiteand lapis lazuli.

Prince Albert exhibited threebeautifully inlaid black marbletables at the Great Exhibition of1851. It quickly became knownthat both he and Queen Victoriawere patrons and collectors ofAshford Black Marble.

John Barwise was the son of aclockmaker from Cockermouth.He is recorded as working at 29St Martin's Lane, London fromcirca 1790. A fine maker ofclocks, chronometers andwatches he is listed as havingbeen Chronometer, Watch &Clock Maker to their RoyalHighnesses the Dukes of York,Kent, Cumberland & Gloucester.

In 1805 he was one of fifteenwatchmakers selected by theboard of Longitude toadjudicate in the disputebetween Thomas Earnshaw andJohn Arnold. The othersincluded Barraud, Brockbank,Grant, Hardy, Haley, Molyneux,Pennington and Recordon. A fine table regulator byBarwise forms part of the LordHarris Collection at Belmontand examples of his work can beseen in The Science Museum.

A fine Regency domestic regulator with 12 inch squaresilvered dial and large subsidiary seconds dial withobservatory markings, signed Barwise London withstrike/silent lever above XII and blued steel hands. Thesuperb quality, eight day, five pillar movement numbered8803 with substantial shouldered plates, Graham type deadbeat escapement and Harrison's maintaining power.Striking the hours on a bell. Original wood rod pendulumwith large brass bob and graduated rating nut, original brasscased weights and ebony handle winding key.

The flame figured, Egyptian influenced, mahogany case withpanels of burr amboyna has brass capitals to the trunk withebonised fluted pillars. The hood has an architecturalpediment with original brass ball finial and brass cornerfinials with pierced wood side frets.

Scholars hadalways been interested inEgyptian design and afterthe Battle of the Nile in 1798 public interest grew inall things Egyptian. Thedesigner and patron ThomasHope designed an Egyptianroom at his London home inDuchess Street. It is said tohave been one of the mostinventive interiors of its datein Europe.

The pretty flame mahogany casewith shallow arch top, ripple cornice mouldings, glazed sidepanels and canted angles flanking fielded panels to the hooddoor with a finely turned brass bezel. The highly figuredarched trunk door with ebony banding, flanked by cantedsides, ebonised mouldings to the base with a single plinth.

An exceptional rosewood wall regulator with 6 inch squaremercury gilt engraved dial having a silvered chapter signedCharles Frodsham No 84 Strand, London No 1320. Bluedsteel moon hands and a subsidiary seconds dial withobservatory marks. The month going, spring drivenmovement with dead beat escapement has a beautifullymade pendulum which is suspended from the backboard. A pair of superb nine inch glass mercury tubes terminate ina fine pointer with highly detailed silvered rating nutdivided 0 to 72 with additional twin vernier scaled 0-10. A rare detachable boxwood beat scale is signed ChasFrodsham 84 Strand London with two scales, one in inches2-0-2 and the lower in degrees 3.5-0-3.5.

The elegant slim rosewood case with chamfered caddy topand a long glazed door with brass frame and pierced andcarved foliate section below the dial.

Charles Frodsham is regarded as one of the most eminenthorologists of the 19th century. In 1854 on the death ofBenjamin Lewis Vulliamy, he purchased the goodwill of thebusiness and succeeded Vulliamy as Superintendent andKeeper of Her Majesty’s clocks at Buckingham Palace. He was a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company ofClockmakers, becoming Master in 1855 and again in 1862.

The exceptional pendulum on this clock is known in oneother clock, number 1165, see Derek Roberts, EnglishPrecision Pendulum Clocks p151. Figure 19-16. This was adesign that Frodsham first announced in 1866 in his eightpage booklet ‘Mecurial Compensation Pendulums, theirConstruction and Adjustments’.

Kelvin, White & Hutton arelisted as working at 11 BilliterStreet, London from 1904 to1937. The firm was founded byWilliam Thompson who laterbecame Lord Kelvin. At the ageof 21 he was offered theProfessorship of NaturalPhilosophy at GlasgowUniversity, a post he held for 53 years.

This mantel chronometer is recorded in ‘MercerChronometers’ by Tony Merceras having been supplied in 1928at a cost of £30.

The eight day fusee and chain movementwith maintaining power, substantial spotted plates withfour double screwed pillars. The spotted escapementplatform with helical hairspring, cut bimetal balance withcircular balance weights, Earnshaw-type spring detentescapement.
