Volume 6, Number 12 Fall 2011 For Children’s Hospital and Health System uzanne Hansen spent her early years helping her father, a physician, take care of his patients during the Great Depression. Sue served as the official flashlight holder when her father made house calls. On a typical Sunday, she would accompany her father on rounds at the hospital. Her mother, a former kindergarten teacher, was often the first contact for many of his patients who would call or stop by the family’s home, which at times seemed more like a walk-in clinic. During the holidays, Sue’s mother would take her to visit the elderly at the Layton Home where Sue would give a gift of candy to each resident. During one of these visits, she fondly recalls meeting Carl Zeidler, Milwaukee’s 33rd mayor, who volunteered his time as a violinist for the Layton Home Christmas program. Today, Sue is grateful to her parents for instilling in her such values as compassion for those in need and the gift of sharing. Sue decided to honor her parents by establishing a fund in their name at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. With the help of Planned Giving Director Kelly Sachse, Sue designed the fund to best serve the memory of her parents. Today, The Hansen Weigand Family Fund for Translational Research is directed toward pediatric research at Children’s Hospital. In addition to her current giving, Sue also designated the fund as the beneficiary of her estate gift to Children’s. According to Sue, “I have a great respect for thinking outside the box. Let’s prevent things before they happen. There is no such thing as the word ‘no’ when it comes to research.” “My parents never had the opportunity to become grandparents. They would have been wonderful grandparents,” Sue reflected. “By supporting research at Children’s, my gift will lead to healthier lives for the children and grandchildren of so many families. I cannot think of a greater gift to give my parents.” Sue was a department manager with Marshall Fields for more than 40 years, working in both Chicago and Milwaukee. Shortly after retiring, Sue began volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, a home-away- from-home for families whose children are patients at Children’s Hospital. It was a way to continue the care of others she learned from her parents. The families who stay at the house are special to Sue. “It is because of what Children’s Hospital can do for them,” she said. “The families are so appreciative.” Parents pave path for philanthropic pursuits Suzanne Hansen S In this issue • How you can help Children’s Hospital while providing for your loved ones The Guardian Society − partners in our future New DNA test helps provide better care • Some giving ideas for year-end By supporting research at Children’s, my gift will lead to healthier lives for the children and grandchildren of so many families. New DNA test helps provide better care An exciting application of our genetics research is in the area of pharmacogenetics. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin recently developed a DNA test to help our epilepsy specialists when prescribing anticonvulsants. This new test shows how well a child will metabolize the medication.

In a recent example, a doctor in our program started a child on a low dose of carbamazepine. Soon after, the child’s mother called as the child was experiencing nausea, dizziness and unsteadiness. The doctor was talking with the mother when he received the DNA report that indicated that this child would metabolize carbamazepine slowly. He knew immediately that even a low dose would build up and cause side effects. He changed the medication and the child responded well.

We are working with other pharmacogenetic research to better identify effective treatments for cancer and other diseases. This type of testing or “individualized medicine,” will help provide better care to kids and also avoid costly care.
