Coverage

The two main newspaper databases (Lexis Library and Factiva Academic) possess extensive contemporary coverage, often containing more sources online than those available in print format. Dependent upon the publication, contemporary newspaper databases like Lexis Library (c. 1990>) contains about a twenty year archive, whereas Factiva Academic (c.1980>) comprises of ten years’ further coverage. Lexis Library is a database that covers UK newspapers (including regional, national, and broadsheets) whereas Factiva Academic has both national (UK) and international sources including: Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Caribbean Islands, Central America, CIS Countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan), Europe, Latin America, Mediterranean, Middle East, North America and South America.

ABI Inform (Financial Times)

This database contains a range of national and international newspapers and is easy to use supported by excellent coverage. To run a search for newspaper articles

10. Another option would be to compare and contrast two or more newspapers by using the same method but selecting contrasting viewpoints (such as Daily Mail vs. The Guardian).

2. FINDING INTERNATIONAL NEWSPAPER ARTICLES

Factiva Academic

Access to more than 8,000 international sources including major newspapers, newswires and a wide selection of journals. Only five users at a time may use Factiva Academic (it will ask for a username and password if it’s reached its maximum).

To find regional newspapers, say in Nigeria, follow this procedure:

1. Adjust date range drop drop-down box (defaults to 3 months)

2. Source / All Sources 3. Select Source Category drop-

down box 4. By Region 5. Africa6. West Africa 7. select Nigeria

Type keywords and phrases for your search with Free Text Search and select the Search (blue) button to research Nigerian newspapers.

To search for coverage of North Korea and nuclear war:

1. Search for North Korea and nuclear war.

2. Date > all dates (otherwise defaults to three months)

3. Regions > you can select regions > Asia > Eastern Asia > search (covers Korean, North and South)

4. Sort by Most Recent First5. Select the boxes next to any

articles you prefer6. Then you are able to View,

email, print, save, or download into RTF or PDF format.

7. There is an option to also listen to the article being read or translate the article into another language via Google (ranging from Afrikaans to Yiddish).

This recently updated archive contains a range of historical newspapers ranging from the 17th – 19th centuries:

The Times Digital Archive (1785-1986)The best resource to search for newspapers from before the early 1980s is The Times Digital Archive covering 1785-1986. The entire newspaper is captured including all articles, adverts and illustrations / photos.

For instance, if you want to look at newspaper coverage for the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico search this database.

FIND IT AT LINCOLN

Although it does not cover all newspapers, the Find it at Lincoln search engine located on the homepage of the Library website might be useful to find some material. To find any news sources on UFO sightings then replicate the method below:

of the screen 5. Update6. Publication7. Show more (to view all results)8. On the left-hand side of the

screen you can conduct some cursory analysis into countries with the most articles, publication, and subject.

9. For an advanced search select the blue Find it at Lincoln heading above the search box. You can ‘add rows’ from this page to refine your search terms.
