Finding Guide
Henry Family Papers, 1740-1989, and the Jacobsburg Historical Society Photographs May 2006 Funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Summer 2016 Revised by Scott Paul Gordon, Lehigh University Abstract
The collection comprises materials documenting the lives of the descendants of William Henry II (1757-1821), who arrived in Northampton County in 1776 and learned the trade of gunsmith, which his father, William Henry of Lancaster (1729-1786), had practiced in Lancaster in the 1750s. The bulk of the materials concerns the family relationships and civic contributions of William Henry III (1794-1878) and of James Henry (1809-1895) and his extended family, particularly James’s son and last of the family gun makers, Granville Henry (1834-1912); and the family of Granville’s daughter, Mary Adeline Henry (1873-1974) and her husband, Dr. Thomas Henry Atherton Stites (1875-1959). The papers, dating from 1740 through 1989, are arranged into eight sections: correspondence, writing and school materials, biographical, legal, financial, Moravian materials, gun works records, and photographs. The bulk of the collection is correspondence, and much of the material is genealogical and biographical in nature.

Background note The Henry family of Boulton manufactured firearms, most notably Pennsylvania-Kentucky rifles, in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, for four generations. They were the direct descendants of William Henry, who worked as a gunsmith in Lancaster in the 1750s. William Henry served in several roles besides gunmaker, including armorer to Forbes expeditions against Fort Duquesne; superintendent of arms and military accoutrements for the Continental army; member of the Pennsylvania Assembly; treasurer of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (a role which his wife, Ann Wood Henry, assumed after his death); and a member of the Continental Congress. During the British occupation of Philadelphia in 1777-1778, he and his wife entertained Thomas Paine and several other prominent Americans, and they were patrons of artist Benjamin West. William Henry was a member of the American Philosophical Society; he invented the screw auger; and his early experiments with steam-powered boats led to the later successes of John Fitch and Robert Fulton. William and Ann Wood Henry were converts to the Moravian church, an affiliation maintained by many of their descendants. The couple had thirteen children, two of whom followed their father in the gunmaking business.
William Henry’s son, William Henry II, worked in the gunshop at the Moravian settlement of Christian’s Spring after 1776 and settled in the Moravian community of Nazareth in 1780. He married Sabina Schropp in 1781 and together they raised a family of nine children. To fulfill a large government arms contract, William Henry II built a factory at Jacobsburg in 1798 that operated for about five years. Two of William II’s sons, John Joseph (called Joseph) and William Henry III, joined their father’s business and manufactured firearms in Philadelphia. In 1812 they began construction on a second gunworks on the Bushkill, which they named Boulton. This factory produced rifle and musket barrels, locks, bayonets, and other parts to be sent to Philadelphia for assembly. Several styles of firearms manufactured by the Henrys were used in the War of 1812.
William Henry II died in 1821, and the following year William III sold his interest in the family business to Joseph and moved to Wind Gap, Pennsylvania. William III then pursued ventures in the iron business. He is credited with the first use of the hot blast furnace in the smelting of iron in America in 1835; and his entrepreneurial vision also led to the establishment of the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania. In 1822 Joseph closed the Philadelphia operations and consolidated the family gunmaking business at Boulton. The factory began producing firearms in 1826 for the fur and Indian trade. Joseph lived at Boulton with his wife, Mary Rebecca Smith, and only son, James, in the Henry Homestead, a log house probably erected in 1790 and enlarged by William III in 1812. In 1832, Joseph began constructing his Federal-style estate house, now called the John Joseph Henry House.
Joseph Henry’s son, James, was a scholar-gunmaker. He graduated from Moravian Theological Seminary in 1825 and taught at Nazareth Hall, a Moravian boys’ military academy, until 1831. In 1833 he married Mary Magdalene Sautter, the daughter of Moravian missionaries, and together they raised seven children in the Henry Homestead. In his leisure time James studied and wrote about philosophy, art, music, history, and forestry; and he mastered five modern and three ancient languages. An active Moravian, he was a founder of the Moravian Historical Society and a frequent contributor to The Moravian and Transactions of the Moravian Historical Society. In 1857 he traveled to Herrnhut, Saxony, as an alternate delegate to the Moravian General Synod, after which he proceeded on an extended tour of Europe.
James Henry assumed leadership of the gun manufactory in 1836, when his father died. During the pre-Civil War period Boulton, along with the Tryon Company of Philadelphia and Leman’s Rifle Works of Lancaster, produced “plains rifles,” which were capable of dealing with big game animals of

the western frontier. James Henry’s four sons worked with him in the family business. He built homes at Boulton for two of his sons, Robert William and Edward Theophilus. In 1860 his eldest son, Granville Henry, became his partner; the firm became known as James Henry & Son and the gun factory, formerly known simply as Boulton, was renamed Boulton Gun Works. During the Civil War period, the Henrys produced rifles for P.S. Justice Company of Philadelphia, who had a contract with the federal government for military arms.
After the war, Boulton Gun Works faced difficult times because the market was flooded with surplus military arms and because machined-tooled guns, which could be mass produced with interchangeable parts, were preferred to handcrafted firearms made by the Henrys. The family continued to make civilian rifles and shotguns; but they also took advantage of the surplus market, buying rifle barrels, which they shortened, reamed smooth, and mounted on percussion actions for use as shotguns. Production at the Gun Works ceased in 1895, but guns were assembled from parts on hand until 1907. After the gun factory closed, Granville Henry and his brothers pursued other entrepreneurial ventures, such as the ice business. Granville, like his father, was also actively involved in Moravian affairs, particularly education. He served as President of the Board of Trustees of Nazareth Hall, where he, his father, and his grandfather had attended.
Granville Henry married Mary Elizabeth Krause in 1869. They lived in the John Joseph Henry House and raised one daughter, Mary Adeline “Molly” Henry. In 1905 Mary Adeline Henry married Thomas Henry Atherton Stites, who was related to her through their common ancestor, William Henry III. Thomas H.A. Stites, son of Rev. Winfield and Lydia Atherton Henry Stites, grew up at “Sunny Hill,” the family homestead in Wyoming, Pennsylvania. He became a physician with the federal and state public health services and held positions at tuberculosis sanitariums in Hamburg and Cresson, Pennsylvania, as well as in Louisiana and South Carolina. Dr. Stites and Mary Adeline Henry had two daughters, Mary Henry Stites and Lydia Henry Stites. Lydia, an aspiring violinist, died at 21 of complications from pneumonia. In the 1940s, Dr. Stites, along with his wife, unmarried daughter, and mother-in-law (Mary Elizabeth Krause Henry), retired to Boulton, where they lived in the John Joseph Henry House.
In 1959 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania began buying from the city of Easton properties located along the Bushkill Creek in the southeastern part of Bushkill Township for the use of Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters. Under the provisions of the Eminent Domain Act of 1964, the state had acquired 1100 acres of land by 1971, including the Henry Homestead, the greater part of Henry’s Woods, the site of Boulton Gun Works, and other features of historic interest. Controversy over the development of Jacobsburg State Park led in 1972 to the formation of the Jacobsburg Historical Society, an effort that both Mary Adeline Henry Stites and especially her daughter, Mary Henry Stites, actively supported. Mary Adeline Henry Stites and Mary Henry Stites lived in the John Joseph Henry House until their deaths in 1974 and 1989, respectively.

1 The purpose of this genealogy is to assist the researcher in understanding relationships among the family members that appear prominently in this collection. Not all spouses and children are listed here. For a more complete genealogical record, see Charles Sandwick’s Jacobsburg: a Pennsylvania Community and Its People (Jacobsburg Historical Society, 1985). 2 Clarence Edward Clewell was the son of Rev. John H. and Alice Cornelia (Wolle). Clarence and his wife, Ruth Henry, were third cousins, since both were great-great-grandchildren of William II and Sabina Schropp Henry.

Several pieces of correspondence in this section date from the 18th century, but their relationship to the family has not been researched. Numerous letters are between family members, whose correspondence in this collection was less than half a linear foot.
• L.D. Satterlee (Box 23)
Contains the extensive correspondence between L.D. Satterlee (Detroit, MI) and G.M. Schulz, librarian of the Moravian Historical Society in the late 1930s, regarding Satterlee’s detailed research concerning early Henry gun manufactory.
In general, correspondence is arranged first by the chief correspondents as listed above. Letters are then arranged: 1) incoming, 2) outgoing, and 3) miscellaneous and unidentified letters. Incoming and outgoing correspondence are arranged first alphabetically, then chronologically within folders. When two family members are both chief correspondents in the list above, letters are filed in the box of the recipient. For example, a letter from Thomas Henry Atherton Stites to his daughter, Lydia Henry Stites, would be in filed in Lydia Henry Stites’ box (Box 14) under “Stites, Thomas Henry Atherton.” Unidentified and miscellaneous letters are arranged chronologically. Women correspondents are filed according to their full married names regardless of the dates of the correspondence. Bulk correspondence written on the occasions of births and deaths, such as condolence letters to the parents of Lydia Henry Stites, is filed in Series III. Correspondence regarding legal and financial matters is contained in Series IV and V, respectively. Numerous pieces of correspondence in Series I have been transcribed by Donald Repsher. Transcribed letters have numbers on their mylar sleeves that correspond to the transcriptions filed numerically in looseleaf transcription notebooks. Series II Writings; School materials (1801-1934; 3.5 linear feet, 5 boxes) contains published and unpublished articles; literary works; news clippings; speeches; translations; reports; diaries; journals; travelogues; notebooks; drafts of legislative acts; memoirs and autobiographical works; biographical sketches; scholarly works; art work; class assignments, notes, and essays; penmanship notebooks; sketchbooks; music notebooks; and report cards. Arrangement of both sections is alphabetical by subject. Series II is divided into two sections: Writings and School materials. Writings include works by family members, primarily James Henry and his son, Granville, both of whom write on a wide variety of topics. Particularly interesting are James Henry’s nine notebooks regarding scientific and economic aspects of forestry, as well as drafts of state legislation regarding forestry. His 1857 travelogue, written when he went to Europe as an alternate representative to the Moravian synod, contains detailed descriptions of England, France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Several works were for The Moravian and other Moravian publications. James’s writings also include numerous poems and translations. Also of special note are Granville Henry’s daily diaries, which he kept from 1876 to 1911 (excluding 1899-1904); and William Henry III’s “Historical Memoranda by W. Henry,” in which he reflects on his various personal and business ventures. The section also contains medical articles by Thomas Henry Atherton Stites. The second section is school materials. Among these are Granville Henry’s penmanship notebooks dating from the 1840s; Otilia Leibert’s penmanship notebook with parallel exercises in English and German script; and Adeline Amanda Eggert Krause (mother of Mary Elizabeth Krause (Mrs. Granville) Henry) manuscript music notebook and sketchbook of flowers. Series III. Biographical materials (1813-1935; 6.5 linear feet, 13 boxes) contains wedding and other certificates, military papers, writings, biographical sketches, childhood friendship letters, letters of condolence and congratulations, programs and other ephemera, recipes, scrapbooks, obituaries, clippings, eulogies, alumni materials, minutes, and materials regarding memberships in genealogical,
10
social, and professional organizations. Materials about or created by particular person are filed under the individual’s name. Materials relating to a family in general are filed under the family surname. Especially interesting are extracts from the minutes of the Elders Conference, Moravian Church in Nazareth, which were transcribed by Rev. Edward T. Kluge for Granville Henry in 1908. These minutes, dating from 1799-1830, document the differences between William Henry II and the Moravian Congregation. The extracts are in a folder titled Henry family. Series IV. Legal materials (1740-1989; 2.5 linear feet, 3 boxes) contains articles of agreement, deeds, land drafts, estate papers, wills, court testimony, and property appraisals and valuations. The bulk of the materials concerns the settlement of Granville Henry’s estate and materials relating to transferring Henry property to state ownership. Arrangement is alphabetical by subject.
Series V. Financial materials (1875-1930; 1 linear foot, 2 boxes) contain personal accounts, receipts, bank statements, and stocks. Receipts are for personal items, as well as furnishings, repairs, and renovations for the John Joseph Henry House. In general, arrangement is alphabetical by subject.
Series VI. Moravian materials (1840-1927; .5 linear foot; 1 box) contain programs, Church synod materials, publications, and school materials, which document the Henry family’s commitment to the Moravian Church, particularly schools, e.g., Nazareth Hall. Arrangement is alphabetical by subject. Series VII. Gun works (late 1700s-1894; 1.5 linear feet, 2 boxes) contains accounts, receipts, orders, checks, price lists, and employment records. One of the earliest pieces is the Boulton Shop Blotter, which was begun in 1819 by William Henry II. The blotter contains information on customers and notes and ideas for developing the gun manufactory and the Boulton campus. The bulk of materials is orders to and from James Henry & Son (1863-1894), including business with Kittredge & Co., Stanley G. Flagg & Co., and Edward K. Tryon & Co. Jacobsburg Historical Society Photograph Collection (1850s-1970s; 9 linear feet, 27 boxes; 632 cataloging records) represents over 1,000 photographs of family members and friends, the Boulton Gun Works and family properties, Henry’s Woods (forested area on Bushkill Creek, where the Boulton Gun Works and family estates are located), and the local communities and events. Formats include daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, cyanotypes, cartes de visite, cabinet cards, glass slides, prints, glass and film slides and negatives. The collection is rich in family portraits taken throughout the years by local photographers Eggert and Hammann, both of whom were Henry family relatives. The collection is cataloged in detail in the Jacobsburg Historical Society’s PastPerfect collection database; the collection inventory given here summarizes the information in those records. Generally, the boxes and folders are arranged according to subject, although the arrangement is often affected by preservation and other concerns. However, the database provides several methods of searching according to subject. Catalog numbers for photographs are derived from the box number, the folder number within the box, and the item number within the folder. For example, P14.7.3, is a photograph located in box 14, folder 7, and item number 3. Photographs may be cataloged at the item, folder or box leve.. For example, groups of photographs depicting the same location, such as an area in Henry’s Woods, or an individual, e.g., the portraits of Mary Henry Stites as an infant, may all be cataloged in the same record, according to their folder number. Photographs cataloged by the folder are given individual numbers, which are recorded in the Description field of the catalog record. Photographs depicting Thomas Henry Atherton Stites college and career are cataloged in single records by the box. Such
11
photographs are arranged in folders according to subject material and are not given individual item numbers.
