Biographical Note

Steve D. Boyd (1957-) joined the herbarium at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (California

Botanic Garden) in 1985 and served as Curator from 1999 until his retirement in 2009. His

research focuses on the flora of Southern California.

Jim Buel was a student at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona in the 1950s.

Mary Agnes Chase (1869-1963) was senior botanist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and

custodian of grasses at the U.S. National Herbarium.

Curtis Clark was a professor of biology at California Polytechnic University Pomona from 1980

until 2017. He specialized in the study of Eschscholzia.

Arthur L. Cohen (1916-1999) was a professor of botany at Washington State University.

Larry deBuhr received his Ph.D. in botany from Claremont Graduate University and California

Botanic Garden. He was Director of Education at Missouri Botanical Garden and Vice President

of Academic Affairs at Chicago Botanic Garden.

Francis H. Elmore worked for the National Park Service and was the author of Ethnobotany of

the Navajo and Shrubs and Trees of the Southwest Uplands.

Mark A. Elvin is a botanist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in Ventura County, California.

Sally Fisher was a student at Pitzer College in the late 1960s.

F. Raymond Fosberg (1908-1993) worked as a botanist for the U. S. Department of Agriculture,

the U.S. Geological Survey, and National Museum of Natural History. His specialization was in

tropical island plants. He was co-editor of the Flora of Ceylon.

Carrie A. Herd attended Sonoma State University in the early 1980s.

Keith Hoffmaster lived in Santa Ana, California in the 1920s and 1930s.

Karen Hosterman attended Pomona College in the late 1950s.

John Thomas Howell (1903-1994) was the first botanist at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden

(California Botanic Garden) and founder of the California Botanic Garden Herbarium (RSA-

POM). He worked at California Academy of Sciences from 1929 until his death in 1994.

A. Lefebure was affiliated with California Botanic Garden (Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden)

in the 1940s.

Harold L. Lint was a professor at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona from 1947

to 1980. He studied Juncus.

Orlando Mistretta studied botany at Claremont Graduate University and California Botanic

Garden (Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden). He is a Research Associate at California Botanic

Garden and author of Field Guide to the Flora of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Jeffrey Morawetz was a Research Scientist at California Botanic Garden from 2010 to 2015.

Philip A. Munz (1892-1974) was a professor of botany at Pomona College and director of

California Botanic Garden (Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden) from 1946 to 1960. His main

areas of study were Onagraceae and the flora of California.

Peter Raven (1936-) is a plant taxonomist. He served as President of Missouri Botanical Garden

from 1971 until 2010.

Alan Romspert (1945-2009) was a California desert botanist affiliated with the Desert Studies

Center in Zzyzx, California. His major research interest was the flora of the Panamint Range.

John C. Roos (1918-2008) was a doctor and amateur botanist with an interest in the flora of the

deserts of Southern California.

William L. Stern (1926-) taught botany at Yale University, University of Maryland, and

University of Florida, and also served as curator of the Division of Wood Anatomy at the

Smithsonian from 1960 to 1967. He specializes in the study of wood and orchid anatomy.

Richard M. Straw (1926-2012) received his Ph.D. in botany at Claremont Graduate University

and California Botanic Garden (Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden) in 1955. He was a professor

of botany and biology at CSU Los Angeles and studied Penstemon in Mexico and Southern

California.

Dick Swinney is the author of the Glendora Foothills Plant Checklist (1994).

Russell Sage Woglum (1882-1968) was an entomologist who specialized in the study of insect

pests of citrus in California.

Scope and Content of the Collection The field notebook collection contains the field notebooks and notes of multiple creators,

including Steve Boyd, Jim Buel, Mary Agnes Chase, Curtis Clark, Arthur L. Cohen, Larry

deBuhr, Francis H. Elmore, Mark Elvin, Sally Fisher, F. Raymond Fosberg, Carrie A. Herd,

Keith E. Hoffmaster, Karen Hosterman, John Thomas Howell, A. Lefebure, Harold Lint,

Orlando Mistretta, Jeffrey Morawetz, Philip A. Munz, Peter Raven, Alan P. Romspert, John C.

Roos, William L. Stern, Richard M. Straw, Dick Swinney, R. S. Woglum, and one unknown

creator. The field notebooks and notes document plant collections made in California and other

regions from 1922 to 2014. The collection also contains a small amount of related

documentation, such as herbarium specimen distribution lists and correspondence. The collection

is organized into a single series by collector name.

Steve Boyd’s field notebooks cover fieldwork from 1979 to 1998, including consulting work,

collections for a thesis on the flora of Gavilan Hills, and multiple projects related to his work in

the herbarium at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (California Botanic Garden). Most locations

are around Riverside County, the San Gabriel Mountains, the Santa Ana Mountains, and other

parts of Southern California.

Jim Buel’s field notebooks document plant collections made in the Mojave Desert and Lassen

National Forest for coursework at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona from 1957

to 1958.

Mary Agnes Chase’s field notes contain an itinerary and narrative of a 1940 trip to Curaçao and

Venezuela with descriptions of grasses observed.

Curtis Clark’s field notebooks contain his journal and plant collection information from 1970 to

1998, with locations across the Midwest and Western United States and Mexico. The majority of

the collections are from Oklahoma.

Arthur L. Cohen’s field notebook documents his plant collections from 1933 to 1935. Most

collections are from the Bakersfield area and the southern end of the Sierra Nevadas.

Larry deBuhr’s field notebooks cover his plant collections from a fall 1974 trip to Australia, with

the majority of the collections from southwestern Australia.

Francis H. Elmore’s field labels contain plant collection information from a spring 1939 trip to

multiple countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

Mark Elvin’s field notes cover his plant collections from 1995 to 1997, mostly in the San Gabriel

Mountains.

Sally Fisher’s field notebooks document plant collections made for coursework in 1969 around

Claremont (California), Santa Catalina Island, and Papua New Guinea.

F. Raymond Fosberg’s field notes document his plant collections from 1930 to 1932, mostly

around the Los Angeles area, Santa Catalina Island, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Carrie A. Herd’s field notebook documents plant collections made in spring 1982, mostly from

Crane Creek Regional Park in Sonoma County and other locations in Northern California.

Keith E. Hoffmaster’s field notebooks and notes cover plant collections made from 1926 to 1946

around many locations in Southern California, especially in Orange and San Diego counties.

Karen Hosterman’s field notebook covers plant collections made across the western United

States from 1955 to 1958.

John Thomas Howell’s notebook documents plant collections from 1927 to 1930, including

records of collections made at the original Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (California

Botanic Garden) site in Orange County and the surrounding area, as well as other locations

throughout California. The notebook was started by Howell, but most later collections are by B.

D. Stark and E. R. Johnson.

A. Lefebure’s field labels cover plant collections from 1940 to 1942, mostly in Northern

California and the Sierra Nevadas, with some collections in Southern California and Nevada.

Harold Lint’s field notebooks and notes document plant collections from 1941 to 1966 in the

Mojave Desert, Los Angeles area, Tehachapi Mountains area, and Arizona.

Orlando Mistretta’s field notebooks cover observations and plant collections from 1990 to 1995,

mostly in the San Gabriel Mountains and other parts of Southern California.

Jeffrey Morawetz’s field notebooks include plant collection information from 2003 to 2014 from

multiple locations, but especially for fieldwork in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Democratic

Republic of the Congo. Also included is collection information from trips in the United States,

China, Brazil, and Oman.

Philip A. Munz’s field notebooks record his plant collections from 1922 to 1973, mostly in

California but also numerous other states, Canada, Mexico, and several countries in South

America. Also included are notes on cultivation of Oenothera.

Peter Raven’s field labels document his plant collections from 1961 to 1962, mainly in Southern

California, including San Clemente Island. Other collections are from the Sierra Nevadas, Baja

California, and Arizona.

Alan P. Romspert’s field notebooks contain his plant collection data from the Panamint Range,

Soda Springs (Zzyzx), and other locations in the deserts of Southern California from 1972 to

1992.

John C. Roos’s field labels document his plant collections from 1936 to 1957, mainly in the

desert regions of Southern California, as well as collections in the Sierra Nevadas, Baja

California, and Nevada. Also included are Roos’s herbarium specimen distribution lists.

William L. Stern’s field notes cover plant collections from a 1974 trip to Hawaii.

Richard Straw’s field notebooks span from 1954 to 1960 and consist mostly of plant collection

data from trips to Mexico, along with some collections in Southern California and the Southwest.

Also included is correspondence between Straw and Patrick Larkin about his field notes and an

itinerary for his trips to Mexico from 1957 to 1960.

Dick Swinney’s field notes cover his plant collections from 1990 to 2001, mostly in the San

Gabriel Mountains.

R. S. Woglum’s field notes document his plant collections across California from 1934 to 1942,

particularly in San Diego, San Bernardino, and Inyo counties. Also included are Woglum’s

specimen distribution lists and notes by E. M. Harvey from a May 1958 trip with Woglum to the

Mojave Desert.

One notebook by an unidentified person contains rainfall data for an unknown location from

1951 to 1979.
