HISTORY

1870s

Yellowstone National Park is established by Congress in 1872. The park’s establishment

followed several expeditions to the area, including the 1870 Washburn-Doane-Langford

Expedition and the 1871 Hayden Survey. Following the park’s creation, Hayden led

surveys in the park in 1872 and 1878. In the summer of 1877, the Chief Joseph Band of

the Nez Perce was pursued by the United States Cavalry through Yellowstone.

1880s

Expeditions in the park continued, including one led by General Phillip Sheridan in 1882

and several surveys led by Arnold Hague of the USGS between 1883 and 1889.

In 1883, the United States Army Corps of Engineers began to design and develop the

road system in Yellowstone under the direction of Lieutenant D.C. Kingman.

In 1886, the Secretary of the Interior gave administrative control of Yellowstone to the

United States Army. By the end of the decade, cavalry troops had established Camp

Sheridan, a collection of buildings at the western base of the terraces at Mammoth Hot

Springs.

Several early hotels and other concessioner facilities were built throughout the park,

including several at Mammoth Hot Springs, the Geyser Hotel at the Upper Geyser Basin,

Marshall’s Hotel on the Firehole River, and the first Canyon Hotel near the brink of the

Lower Falls.

1890s

Construction on the buildings at Fort Yellowstone began in an area at Mammoth Hot

Springs slightly to the north of the buildings at Camp Sheridan.

Major Hiram Martin Chittenden began working with the United States Army Corps of

Engineers in Yellowstone. Chittenden would eventually become one of the most

important figures in Yellowstone’s history. In the 1890s, under him, work on the Grand

Loop, known then as Project Beltline, continued.

Construction on Lake Hotel was originally completed in 1891. The Hotel’s 125th

anniversary in 2016 was commemorated with a grand celebration. The Fountain Hotel

was also built in the 1890s.

1900s

Major Chittenden continued surveying and developing the roads system in Yellowstone.

Old Faithful Inn and significant additions to Lake Hotel were constructed in the first half

of the decade.

At Mammoth, work on a hydroelectric power plant began. Additional buildings were

constructed at Fort Yellowstone.

1910s

Work on the Canyon Hotel, the largest building ever constructed in Yellowstone, began

at the beginning of the decade, as did additions and alterations to the hotels at Mammoth

and Old Faithful.

In 1916, the National Park Service was created, thus ending the era when the Army had

administrative control of Yellowstone.

Page 5: FINDING AID FOR - NPS

1920s

Yellowstone’s boundaries were a major topic. The northern boundary of the park was

eventually extended. Instead of extending the southern boundary of Yellowstone, Grand

Teton National Park was eventually created.

The Bureau of Public Roads began a massive project in Yellowstone, which included

paving the roads in Yellowstone.

Hotels in the park were expanded. The Yellowstone Park Transportation Company

began construction on buildings at Gardiner, Montana.

1930s

The Yellowstone Park Company was established when Harry Child consolidated his

concessioner businesses.

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crews worked on projects throughout the park.

The current Mammoth Hotel was constructed.

Park administrators began developing Master Plans.

1940s

World War II impacted all facets of American life, including at Yellowstone, but

progress still continued in the park.

1950s

In anticipation of the 50th

anniversary of the National Park Service in 1966, the ten-year

Mission 66 program began in 1956. Mission 66 was an agency wide program that

included additions and improvements to the infrastructure and facilities in the national

parks. At Yellowstone, significant development occurred at Bridge Bay, Canyon Village,

and Grant Village.

1960s

The Yellowstone Park Company was sold, but did not change its name or lose control of

its holdings in the park.

Mission 66 projects continued.

1970s

Building No. 1 at Fort Yellowstone, which had been home to park offices and a museum

since the early 1920s, was updated and renovated to include a visitor center (VC). The

new VC was named after Horace Albright.

The Yellowstone Park Company lost its concessions contract. Management of the

historic hotels in the park passed to Trans World Airlines Services, Inc. (TWA).

1980s

The historic fires of 1988 burned through the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

1990s

The concessioner contract passed from Trans World to AMFAC.

2000s

AMFAC changes its name to Xanterra.

Work on Yellowstone’s infrastructure continues annually.

DESCRIPTION This collection contains over 8,000 individual maps,

drawings, and plans which illustrate the rich history of

exploration, development, and scientific research in

Yellowstone National Park. The maps and drawings

document the construction projects, development plans, and

the research and protection of the park’s natural and cultural

resources that have shaped the history of Yellowstone since

its establishment in 1872.

Most of the earliest maps and drawings originated in the

period between 1886 and 1916 when the US Army had

administrative control of the park. While a few maps in the

collection predate the arrival of the US Army, they are

mostly reproductions of maps that are housed in other

repositories.

There are several hundred maps and drawings in the

collection that have come from the resource management

offices and fire management offices in the park.

The majority of the collection is related to the design,

construction, and management of the park’s infrastructure

since 1916. This includes the blueprints and construction

drawings for many of the concessioner facilities in the park.

It also includes the maps and drawings for the buildings,

roads, and utilities systems built by the National Park

Service and other agencies within the federal government.

While this collection houses most of the maps and drawings

in the Yellowstone Archives, some have not been separated

from, and therefore are still in, their original record groups.

ORGANIZATION The Maps and Drawings Collection is organized into six

series:

I. Army Era

II. Master & Area Plans

III. Resource Management

IV. Interpretation & Education

IV. Facilities & Maintenance

V. Fire Management

Most of these series are further organized into subseries.

PROVENANCE Transferred by various park offices and divisions, often as

part of a larger group of records. Because the collection was

separated over time, the original location for each map and

drawing within the record groups is often hard to trace.

Despite this, efforts were made during processing to

properly note the original locations of the maps and

drawings in the records.

Most of the maps and drawings in this collection are

accessioned by the National Archives and Records

Administration (NARA) and placed on deposit at its affiliated

repository, the Yellowstone National Park Archives. These

records correspond to the NARA Record Group 79, Records of

the National Park Service.

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

I. SERIES I: ARMY ERA, 1883-1918, and undated

This series contains maps and drawings from the era when the U.S. Army managed

Yellowstone National Park. Highlights of this series include maps related to the discussions

between Army officials and the U.S. Department of the Interior regarding the boundary of

Fort Yellowstone, land and road survey maps generated under Major Hiram M. Chittenden,

and blueprints for early concession properties in the park. There are reproductions of some

maps and drawings that originated during this era in the History subseries of Series III:

Resource Management.

1. SUBSERIES 01.01: LAND SURVEY & BOUNDARY MAPS, 1883-1918

This subseries contains maps of Yellowstone National Park, maps of Fort Yellowstone

and Mammoth Hot Springs, and maps of the park’s north entrance at Gardiner, Montana.

There are also maps of the park’s north, south, and east boundaries and maps of the

townships which abutted the park’s boundaries in that period. Many of the maps of Fort

Yellowstone and the vicinity were surveyed and drawn under the direction of Major

H.M. Chittenden. As official maps of Fort Yellowstone, these maps were used for a

variety of reasons by park officials. This subseries is arranged chronologically.

2. SUBSERIES 01.02: ROADS, 1892-1905, 1916, and undated

All of the maps and drawings in this subseries relate to the survey and construction of

the park’s road system. Now known colloquially as the “Grand Loop,” the early name

for the road that circles Yellowstone was the “Beltline” and its construction was referred

to as “Project Beltline.” In addition to maps for Project Beltline, this subseries also

contains maps produced through the road survey projects led by Major H.M. Chittenden.

The 1905 road survey project was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of

Engineers and the Civil Engineering Department of Ohio State University. Over four

weeks, under the guidance of Chittenden, three survey parties consisting of students and

professors mapped 42 miles of roads in the park. Once work was completed, the

members of each survey party were treated to a one week stage coach tour of the park.

Although the maps in this subseries range in date from 1892 to 1916, most are from the

period between 1892 and 1905. This subseries is arranged chronologically.

3. SUBSERIES 01.03: BUILDINGS, SERVICES, & UTILITIES, circa 1891-1915

The maps and drawings in this subseries are mostly related to construction and utility

projects at Fort Yellowstone. In addition to architectural blueprints for officer housing,

there are also maps of the Fort’s water and sewage systems. Additionally, there are

engineering drawings of components of the Fort’s water system and plans related to the

Fort’s hydroelectric power plant. There are also information maps indicating services

and utilities throughout the park. For drawings and blueprints of the hotels and other

concessioner properties built in the park before 1916, see the Army Era: Concessioners

Page 11: FINDING AID FOR - NPS

YELL 145676 8

& Partners subseries. There are also maps and drawings that originated during this era

in the History subseries of Series III: Resource Management. This subseries is arranged

chronologically.

4. SUBSERIES 01.04: CONCESSIONERS & PARTNERS, 1885-1915

The maps and drawings in this subseries all originated in the offices of the early park

concessioners and partners. Outline plans and layouts for many of the early hotels are in

this subseries. There are also original blueprints and building plans drawn by Robert C.

Reamer for the hotels at Canyon, Lake, and Mammoth, as well as other concessioner

buildings that were built in the Army Era. Other maps and drawings in this subseries

were produced by the railroad companies or drawn for the camping companies by a

contracted engineer. The maps and drawings are included in this subseries because they

were likely submitted to the park offices for approval or as part of their contract

arrangements with the park. This subseries is arranged chronologically.

II. SERIES II: MASTER & AREA PLANS, 1930-1995, and undated

This series contains Yellowstone National Park Master Plans, preliminary and draft maps and

drawings that are classified as interim master plans, and planning maps and drawings for

specific areas of the park. The Master Plans were issued two to three times a decade

beginning in 1932 and ending in 1965. They were an integral part of building the

infrastructure of the park and ensuring that each area of the park was accessible and visitor-

oriented. Each Master Plan typically includes park wide administrative maps, road maps, and

trail maps. They also include maps specific to the main visitor areas in the park. The maps

and drawings correspond to written plans. In the years when formal Master Plans were not

issued, the park planning offices were still drafting planning maps and drawings. Those

drafts are included in this subseries as interim master plans. Beyond the Master Plans and

interim plans, there are also area plans in this subseries. Some of these area plans were

created during the decades when Master Plans were issued but were not part of the Master

Plan process. Others were issued after Master Plans were discontinued. Some of these area

plans have corresponding narratives, as well. The Master Plans are from the period between

1932 and 1965. The interim master plans are from the 1950s and 1960s. The area plans

were created between 1930 and 1995. In this subseries, the Master Plans and interim master

plans are arranged chronologically and followed by the area plans, which are also arranged

chronologically.

III. SERIES III: RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, circa 1916-2010, and undated

This series contains maps and drawings which have originated from or are directly related to

the study and management of Yellowstone’s natural, cultural, and historic resources. This

series is divided into seven subseries based on the general organization and divisions within

the Yellowstone Center for Resources, the branch founded in 1993 to unite all of the park’s

science and resource management offices. The organization and contents of this series and

the subseries within are also derived from the organization of the Resource Management

Page 12: FINDING AID FOR - NPS

YELL 145676 9

Record Group Collection (RG-01) within the Yellowstone Archives. The seven subseries are

Geology, Wildlife, Vegetation, Weather, Archeology, History, and Land Use.

1. SUBSERIES 03.01: GEOLOGY, circa 1917-2010, and undated

The maps and drawings in the Geology subseries all relate to the study and mapping of

Yellowstone’s physical landforms and thermal features. Many of the maps identify the

various surficial landforms that make up Yellowstone’s landscape. Others originated

from studies of the depth and composition of the lakebeds of Yellowstone Lake and

other lakes throughout the park. There are also several maps of the park’s many thermal

features, hotspots, and basins. Within this subseries, the maps are arranged

chronologically.

2. SUBSERIES 03.02: WILDLIFE, 1918-2003, and undated

In this subseries, the maps and drawings are related to the study and management of

Yellowstone’s wildlife. The maps and drawings are organized and grouped in a manner

derived from the organization of the wildlife records in RG-01 and the divisions of

research at the Yellowstone Center for Resources. There are general wildlife

management maps and drawings. There are also subcategories for bear management

maps and drawings and for those related to the study of birds. The bison management

maps and drawings have been listed separately from the maps and drawings related to

elk and other ungulates. Maps and drawings related to fish and those related to

predators other than bears are also listed in separate subcategories. Within each of these

subcategories – Wildlife Management (Mgmt), Bear Management (Mgmt), Birds, Bison

Management (Mgmt), Elk and Other Ungulates, Fish, and Other Predators – the maps

and drawings are arranged chronologically.

3. SUBSERIES 03.03: VEGETATION, circa 1924-2000, and undated

This subseries covers a diverse array of topics related to the many fields of study within

the Vegetation program at Yellowstone. A few maps and drawings relate to forestry

management, while several others were created during the study and management of the

various diseases and insects that plague the park’s vegetation, including Blister Rust and

the mountain pine beetle. There are also maps that document park wetlands and

vegetation zones and types. The organization of this subseries is based on the

organization of the Vegetation record group (RG-01 Veg). Therefore, the maps and

drawings related to forestry management are listed first and then alphabetically. They

are followed by the maps and drawings related to the study and control of diseases and

insects, which are also arranged alphabetically. The maps and drawings related to the

park’s rare plants, wetlands, vegetation types, and general vegetation management

follow the disease and insect maps and drawings and are also arranged alphabetically.

4. SUBSERIES 03.04: WEATHER, 1970-2002

This subseries has maps related to precipitation in the park in the last decades of the

twentieth century. Most of the maps were created by the Soil Conservation Survey in

Page 13: FINDING AID FOR - NPS

YELL 145676 10

Bozeman using compiled precipitation data gathered in the park. One of the maps

illustrates storm systems based on data gathered from the lookout on Mount Sheridan.

The maps in this subseries are arranged chronologically.

5. SUBSERIES 03.05: ARCHEOLOGY, 1967-1996, and undated [RESTRICTED]

The maps and drawings in this subseries document archeological sites located in or near

Yellowstone National Park. Many of the maps were produced by the National Park

Service’s Midwest Archeological Center. The others were likely produced in the offices

of the park archeologist. This subseries is arranged chronologically. The maps and

drawings in this subseries are subject to access restrictions due to the following federal laws:

National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Archeological Resources Protection Act

(ARPA). Access must be approved by the Archivist.

6. SUBSERIES 03.06: HISTORY, circa 1930-2000, and undated

This subseries contains reproductions of maps and drawings related to the early exploration

of the Yellowstone area, as well as maps and drawings which were created in the process of

researching and documenting the history of the park. Many of the maps and drawings in

this subseries are records of other government agencies or located in other private

collections. There are copies of several maps that were drawn after the Washburn-

Langford-Doane expedition and the Hayden expeditions of the 1870s. Annotated historical

research maps indicating the routes of these expeditions and others are also in this subseries.

Additionally, there are copies of maps that were drawn based on the surveys of Arnold

Hague. There are also copies of architectural drawings of some of the buildings that were

erected at Mammoth Hot Springs by the U.S. Army. There are maps of the Nez Perce

Campaign of 1877 and copies of historical maps of Fort Yellowstone featuring research

notes on the history of the Fort and its buildings. Many of these maps likely originated in

the office of the prominent park historian, Aubrey Haines. Of the newer drawings, there are

several featuring the historic roads and bridges in the park created as part of the

documentation for the Historic American Engineering Record. The arrangement of this

subseries is based chronologically on the dates of creation of the original maps. If the map

is a reproduction, the date of the copy is noted.

7. SUBSERIES 03.07: LAND USE, circa 1916-1994, and undated

The maps and drawings in this sub-series are related to the survey and management of

land within the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park and the lands along the park’s

borders. Many of the maps, drawings, and surveys in this subseries relate to the

revisions and additions to the park’s northern boundary in the 1920s and 1930s. Several

document the ownership status of the lands abutting the northern boundary. There are

also maps, drawings, and surveys of proposed and approved additions to the park’s

south and east boundaries, as well topographic maps and surveys of specific areas in the

park, including Bridge Bay, the East Entrance, and West Thumb. The maps and

drawings in this subseries are arranged chronologically.

Page 14: FINDING AID FOR - NPS

IV. SERIES IV: INTERPRETATION & EDUCATION, 1961-1994, 2005, and undated

This series contains maps and drawings of roadside interpretive exhibits, signs, and devices,

as well as museum and visitor center exhibits plans and designs. The maps and drawings in

this subseries are arranged chronologically.

V. SERIES V: FACILITIES & MAINTENANCE, 1916-2006, and undated

This series contains maps, drawings, blueprints, and other plans for the buildings, structures,

roads and trails, grounds and shorelines, and services and utilities that have been designed,

developed, constructed, and renovated since the National Park Service was founded in 1916.

In this collection, maps and drawings for buildings, roads and trails, and other facilities that

were developed and constructed before the National Park Service took charge of Yellowstone

can be found in Series I: Army Era. Maps and drawings related to facilities in the park can

also be found in the History subseries of Series III: Resource Management.

There are six subseries in the Facilities & Maintenance series. These are Buildings,

Structures, Roads & Trails, Grounds & Shorelines, Services & Utilities, and Parkwide. The

organization of the Facilities & Maintenance series is based on the organization of the

Facilities & Maintenance record group (RG-04) in the Yellowstone Archives.

1. SUBSERIES 05.01: BUILDINGS, 1918-2004

This subseries contains drawings, blueprints, renderings, and maps of buildings in

Yellowstone. The buildings drawn up and laid out in the blueprints and drawings in this

subseries were designed and built by the National Park Service and by the concessioners

that have operated in Yellowstone since the NPS was founded. The National Park

Service has designed and constructed a wide variety of buildings within the park over

the decades, including barns & stables, campground facilities, clinics & hospitals,

comfort stations & wash houses, employee housing & facilities, entrance & ranger

stations, fire lookouts, utility buildings, and visitor centers. The NPS has also been

involved with the design and construction of buildings for the concessioners in the park.

Most of the concession buildings in the park were constructed by the Yellowstone Park

Company (YPC), which was formed in 1936, when several businesses owned by the

family of Harry W. Child were consolidated. The businesses included in the

consolidation were the Yellowstone Park Boat Company, Yellowstone Park Hotel

Company, Yellowstone Park Lodge & Camps Company, and Yellowstone Park

Transportation Company. These companies were responsible for the construction,

additions, and renovations to the hotels, lodges, and other guest facilities at locations

throughout the park. Many of the blueprints and design plans for concession buildings

in this subseries were done by Robert C. Reamer. The YPC also worked extensively

with the architect Fred W. Willson in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, and his designs and

blueprints can be found throughout this subseries.

This subseries is organized alphabetically by park location, then chronologically. This

subseries contains maps and drawings of buildings at all of the major tourist stops and

Page 15: FINDING AID FOR - NPS

government areas along the Grand Loop. There are also maps and drawings for

buildings at Bechler, Divide Creek, the East Entrance, Gallatin Canyon, Gallatin

Gateway, Gardiner, Montana [North Entrance], Lamar, Mount Sheridan, Mount

Washburn, the Northeast Entrance, Peale Island, Shoshone Lake, the South [Snake

River] Entrance, Stephens Creek, the West Entrance, and West Yellowstone. At the

end of the subseries, there are several maps and drawings that feature buildings at two or

more locations throughout the park and buildings designed to be built in Yellowstone,

but in no specific location within the park.

2. SUBSERIES 05.02: STRUCTURES, 1930-2002

This subseries contains drawings and design plans for structures such as amphitheaters,

boat docks, fencing and screens, and park entrances and signs. This subseries is

arranged chronologically.

3. SUBSERIES 05.03: ROADS & TRAILS, 1916-2000

The maps and drawings in this subseries relate to the development, layout, construction,

and maintenance of the road system and the trails system in Yellowstone. Many of the

drawings and blueprints are from a series of major projects undertaken in the park by the

federal government in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. For these projects, the road system

in the park was referred to as the Yellowstone National Park Highway System

(YNPHS). In this subseries, all of the drawings from these projects and others

sponsored by the federal government over the decades have YNPHS in the title. In this

subseries, there are also designs, drawings, and maps for other construction projects

related to the roads and bridges in Yellowstone. There are also several maps and

drawings of the trails within the park. These include maps, layouts, and construction

drawings for the trails around individual areas within the park and maps that show the

trail system of the entire park. This subseries is arranged chronologically.

4. SUBSERIES 05.04: GROUNDS & SHORELINES, 1936-1972, and undated

In this subseries, the maps and drawings relate to the development and construction of

campgrounds in Yellowstone. There are also maps and drawings of landscaping work

on the grounds at Canyon Village and the grounds at the Game Ranch at Stephens

Creek. This subseries is arranged chronologically.

5. SUBSERIES 05.05: SERVICES & UTILITIES, circa 1919-circa 2000

The maps and drawings in this subseries relate to the design, development, and layout of

the communications systems, electrical systems, water and sewer systems, and other

utilities systems in Yellowstone. Some of the maps and drawings are related to the

construction of a specific utility line or system, while many others are layouts of the

utilities systems at individual areas in the park. All of the maps and drawings in this

subseries feature a utility line or system that extends either above ground or below

piping, water systems, and other utility systems, there are also drawings for these

systems in the Buildings subseries of Series V: Facilities & Maintenance in this

collection.

6. SUBSERIES 05.06: PARKWIDE, 1938-2006

This subseries contains maps and drawings that are related to the general maintenance

and improvement of the developed areas in Yellowstone. The majority of the maps in

this subseries are maintenance assignments that are part of the contracts each

concessioner agrees to before they can operate in the park. This subseries is arranged

chronologically.

VI. SERIES VI: FIRE MANAGEMENT, circa 1930-2003, and undated

The maps and overlays in this series are organized into two subseries, an organization which

reflects the organization of the records in Record Group 03: Fire Management. The first

subseries in this series is Suppression & Prevention, History, Occurrences, & Progressions

(non-1988). The second subseries is 1988 Fires.

1. SUBSERIES 06.01: SUPPRESSION & PREVENTION, HISTORY, OCCURRENCES,

& PROGRESSIONS (NON-1988), circa 1930-2003, and undated

This subseries contains maps and overlays related to wildfire management in the park.

Many are related to suppression and prevention of wildfires in Yellowstone. These

include maps that illustrate the “seen areas” from fire lookouts throughout the park, as

well as maps that illustrate fuel types throughout the park and the rates at which certain

areas were predicted to burn. Many of the maps in this subseries chronicle the history

and occurrences of fires in the park in the decades since Yellowstone was established.

Others illustrate the progressions of certain fires as they burned in the park, including

many of the fires that burned in 1981. None of the maps and overlays in this subseries

are directly related to the 1988 Fires. All maps, drawings, and overlays related to the

1988 Fires have been processed into a separate subseries within the Fire Management

Series. Architectural drawings of the various fire lookouts can be found in the Buildings

subseries in Series V: Facilities & Maintenance in this collection. This subseries has

been arranged alphabetically.

2. SUBSERIES 06.02: 1988 FIRES, 1988, and undated

This subseries contains maps and overlays related to the series of fires and fire

complexes that burned through the park in the summer and fall of 1988. In that year,

over a dozen significant fires affected almost 800,000 acres of the park, while also

burning through several thousands of acres in the surrounding national forests. Most of

the maps in this subseries are daily progressions of these fires that were charted by

infrared flyovers that often occurred twice daily during peak burn times. These

progressions are organized in this subseries based on the names and groupings the park

assigned these fires in 1988. Most of the fires eventually burned together and were

Page 17: FINDING AID FOR - NPS

YELL 145676 14

managed as complexes. The four major fire complexes were the Clover Mist complex,

the Hellroaring-Storm Creek complex, the North Fork complex, and the Snake River

complex. In addition to the progression maps in this subseries, there are also maps and

overlays indicating incident command posts, helibases, and other information related to

the management of the efforts to suppress the fires. There are also maps that were

produced in the aftermath of the 1988 fire season. These maps relate to rehabilitation

efforts, as well as research efforts to determine the ecological impacts of the fires. This

subseries is arranged alphabetically, since most of the maps originated in 1988.
