WRFL JUNIOR FINALS SEASON 2019 1

EDITORIALJunior Final Series – Issue 4, August 25th 2019

By MATTHEW DUCK As we enter Week 4 of Junior Finals and what is ultimately the fi nal day of the Junior season, it’s an ideal opportunity to refl ect on the season and acknowledge the many people that contributed to its success.

From club committee members to team managers to offi cials, as well as parents, guardians and families that provide support, local community sport really does rely on the efforts of so many to thrive. On behalf of the WRFL, I thank all such volunteers for their efforts.

Perhaps the most infl uential role on matchday is that of the volunteer coach. Yes, the players are the ones who kick the ball, and yes, the umpires are pivotal to the ‘management’ of the game, but it’s the coaches who arguably wield the most infl uence over the entire environment, and it’s an infl uence that can be harnessed for both positive or negative effect.

There’s no doubt the role of the coach can be pretty tough. Not only must you concern yourself with strategies and tactics, you also need to be emotionally intelligent to get the best out of a myriad of personality types within a playing group, all whilst being given a lot of advice that you may not have specifi cally asked for!

Former Collingwood and Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews is universally regarded as one of the best coaches the game has ever seen. Yet, Matthews retired at the Lions with a winning ratio as coach of just 57%, meaning he lost nearly as often as he won.

Now, if you were a surgeon with a 57% success rate, you’d be out of a job! However, Matthews is lauded as one of the best because we recognise that as a coach, it’s less about achieving constant perfection and more about how you perform in the moments that matter. To that end, today is a great test for any coach under pressure to recognise their infl uence, maintain their cool at all times and be the best coach they can possibly be.

I wish all involved today the very best of luck.

UMPIRES CORNER

By GRAEME HODGART

Today marks the close of another chapter of WRFL history with the completion of the Junior Grand Finals. It will also signal the end of some players’ careers, those who do not resume playing in 2020. Likewise, some Umpires will be offi ciating for the fi nal time before pursuing other interests and pathways next year and beyond.

While some of the local football folk are only concerned with the junior side of the WRFL, there is another group who, for various reasons, are totally and solely committed to the senior sections of the league. However, there will be a third group of people who will take one step away from the juniors and land themselves right in the middle of the Senior Finals.

The umpiring fraternity is very similar. For much of the season there have been some umpires that have been involved in only the Junior divisions. As of today, their season is over except for one or two who may be asked to step up to cover absences due to illness, injury, family commitments, etc. Those who have been Umpiring in the senior ranks are now totally focussed on the fi nals and hoping that they will be selected each week during the fi nals’ series.

Unfortunately, there are only so many spots to fi ll and as each week passes by, less and less umpires are required. The Umpires who were selected for Junior Grand Finals last week and again those offi ciating today were carefully chosen. The entire season is taken into consideration. Attitude, attendance at training,

fi tness, concentration, performance in games, consistency, positioning, all-round ability, reliability, punctuality are just some of the attributes which help divide the wheat from the chaff. Often coaches and commentators will talk about the one percenters. At times, it may be a very small, insignifi cant detail that allows one umpire to ‘sneak’ ahead of another and gain selection.

Congratulations to all Umpires, fi eld, boundary and goal, who were selected to offi ciate in the Junior Grand Finals last week and those who were appointed to do the same this week. Hopefully, all the positive aspects from last week’s games will be on display again throughout today’s matches. Remember, just like the players, the umpires are out there striving to do their best.

QUIZAt a boundary throw in, two players nominate to contest for the ball. However, the throw in is very poor and falls short of the nominated players and strikes a defender on the back. What happens next?

(a) The fi eld umpire calls play on.

(b) The fi eld umpire directs the boundary umpire to throw the ball in again.

(c) A free kick is paid against the defender.

The correct answer is (b). See Law 8.2.2 (b) and Law 15.5 (a).
