Top earning bloggers didn’t get wherethey are by accident. Just like any otherprofession (yes blogging is a profession…in my opinion at least) there are certaincharacteristics that bloggers have thatgive them an advantage in theblogosphere. While some characteristicsare an inherent part of their personality, other characteristics are purposefully anddeliberately developed. I was curious toknow what exactly sets top earningbloggers apart from bloggers who arestruggling and bloggers who are barelykeeping their heads above the water. So Iset about doing some research and Idiscovered that there are at least 5common habits among top earning

bloggers. Here they are in no speci corder.

1. Top Earning Bloggers Have aVision – When you think about theword ‘vision’ you probably havethoughts of a nice corporate o cewith a beautiful hangingsomewhere with the words ‘VisionStatement’ boldly displayed at thetop of it. The vision statementessentially states the organization’slong term view of itself and outlinesits primary goals. But visions andvision statements don’t apply solelyto corporations. Top earningbloggers also have a long termview of their blogs and have certainexpectations that drive how theyoperate on a daily basis. This iswhat keeps them going even whenthings aren’t going according toplan. In other words, they have adestination that they are trying toreach and they are not easilydistracted or detoured byroadblocks or setbacks. Take CarolTice, top earning blogger of theMake A Living Writing Blog. Carolbegan as a freelance writer who

was being o ered little to nothingfrom content mills for her writing.Rather than sit back and acceptthat, she knew she was worth morethan that and she was determinedto get paid what she was worth. Soshe decided to start her own blogin 2008 based on the success shehad experienced in giving herself acontinuous pay increase byrefusing to undervalue her work asa freelancer. She wanted to sharewhat she had learnt with otherfreelancers who were acceptingwhatever was thrown at them fortheir work. So her vision from thebeginning was to earn what shewas worth and this has fueled thegrowth of her blog earnings andthe overall success of her blog.

2. Top Earning bloggers have apassion for what they bloga b o u t – One of my favoritebloggers is Lisa Irby. She is theowner of several blogs but hermain blog is 2Createawebsite. Lisais passionate about teaching andshe has channeled her passion intoher blogs. 2Createawebsite isdedicated to teaching people how

to create a website, internetmarketing and how to make moneyonline. Her others blogs are alsodedicated to sharing herknowledge through teaching. Oneof her blogs, NapturallyCurly.com isfocused on teaching women howto transition from processed tonatural hair and how to properlycare for kinky hair. Her passion forteaching is what keeps her going. As a blogger, it is a bad idea to blogabout something simply becauseyou think it’s a lucrative niche. Sucha blog is unsustainable and iscertain to become defunct soonerrather than later. By the way, if youare a blogger and you don’t like towrite, you’re at a seriousdisadvantage. Nobody can keepdoing something that they hatedoing consistently withoutdeveloping serious resentmentissues and recurring thoughts ofquitting. So a part of having apassion for what you blog about ishaving a love for writing in the rstplace. Matt Marshall is an exampleof a blogger who is a professionaljournalist and who has a great love

for writing. He earns between$50,000 and $100,000 every monthdoing what he is passionate about;technology and writing.

3. Top Earning Bloggers listen totheir readers – Have you evertried talking to someone whocouldn’t care less about what youhave to say? They may pretend tocare but you know they really don’tbecause based on the silly thingsthey say or the questions that theyask, you know that what you justsaid was not heard. Top earningbloggers have mastered the art oflistening and you know it based ontheir knack for giving readersexactly what they want. They get toknow their readers by listening tothem and responding to themaccordingly. While they may getlots and lots of messages andcomments, they take the time toread what they can and to respond. It is understandable that they maynot be able to respond to everycomment or to every question butthey do take the time to respond tosome. I was doing some researchfor a client this week. He wanted

Page 7: find more info

me to compile a list of relationshipblogs that receive many commentsAND the blogger regularlyresponds to these comments. WhatI discovered was eye-opening. I wasappalled at the number of bloggerswho never bother to respond toany of the comments made orquestions asked by their readers. And then they wonder why theyaren’t making any money fromtheir blog. It’s because blogging isreally not about the blogger. It’sabout the reader. Top earningbloggers know that. The topearning bloggers use the feedbackand ideas that they get from theirreaders and turn those ideas intoproducts or services that bene ttheir readers. One blogger whostands out in this regard is GinaTrapani, founder of Lifehacker. Sheis also the creator of the ThinkUpapp and the Todo.txt apps.

4. Top earning bloggers arepatient – Patience is a virtue thattoo few bloggers possess. Toomany bloggers are of the opinionthat a blog is a way to get rickquick. Top earning bloggers know

Page 8: find more info

that this couldn’t be further fromthe truth. They know that it takestime to build a following, it takestime to earn the respect and trustof your readers, and it takes timeto become a top earning blogger.Another thing that surprised mewhile doing the research for myclient was the number of blogs thathave been abandoned and havenot been updated in years.Frustration is no doubt a part ofthe problem but I would bet mybottom dollar that lack of patiencehas a lot to do with this. Bloggersshould be willing to stick with theirblogs long enough to realize thefruits of their labor and they shouldrecognize that it may take longerfor some bloggers to make moneyblogging than for others. The topearning bloggers are the ones whohave been blogging consistently forat least one year. The majority oftop earning bloggers had beenblogging for longer than a yearbefore they saw any great results. Agreat example of a patient bloggeri s Darren Rowse, of Problogger. This year will make 13 years since

Page 9: find more info

Darren has been blogging. His blogbegan as a hobby which thenevolved into a part-time job andhas eventually grown into a full-time business today. But it was notthe overnight success that somebloggers hope to have. Patiencehas been a great contributor toDarren’s success.

5. Top earning bloggers areconsistent – Consistency isunderrated as a prerequisite forsuccess. What I found out abouttop earning bloggers is that ifnothing else, they are consistent. That means they blog consistently, whether it is everyday, once perweek or twice per month. Theydon’t blog when they feel like andtake a break when they don’t. Soyou can expect to get regular, freshcontent from them on a consistentbasis. This helps with building andmaintaining a loyal following.Readers look forward to theircontent and know that they canalways expect freshly pressedinformation.

So there you have it folks. We can all learn

a thing or two from those who do it best. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel.Take a chapter from the book of topearning bloggers and you may very wellfind yourself in their company :).
