the year in review

Dear Friends,

For many members of the Hamilton Gardens family, 2012 will be remembered as a year of making new friends, reconnecting with longtime supporters, and developing major community partnerships and collaborations. Unique programs that were enjoyed by members and visitors in 2012 were nurtured and took root throughout the preceding year. Here is just a sampling of these activities:

Staff and Board members from the Gardens and the Towns County Elementary 21-Century After School Program invested significant time and energy in planning Education in the Gardens. This innovative exhibition and accompanying lectures beautifully reflected the mission of both organizations, encouraging strikingly inspired uses of flora and fauna and stewardship of Earth’s natural resources.

For many months, Mountain Bee Association and the Gardens worked together to design an outdoor space at the Gardens to support a new Apiary. This partnership brought together a year-around food source of pollen and nectar for the millions of bees, to raise public awareness about the plight of honey bees, encourage visitors to plant bee-friendly gardens of their own, demonstrating the beauty and value of pollinator gardens.

The following financial report demonstrates that Garden leaders and staff, members, and the community-at-large continue to be incredibly generous and supportive of the Gardens. Without your financial support, and the more that 5,000 hours of service contributed this year by the Gardens corps of 16 volunteers, we could not possibly continue to achieve excellence in the Garden’s four key mission areas: Conservation, Education, Exhibition, and Research.

It is with great pride and gratitude that we share this annual report with you, and thank you for all that you have done to make 2012 a year of great success at the Gardens.

With warmest regards,

Paul HansenCurator

Hamilton Gardens Directional Sign

At the entrance to the main parking lot for the Fair there was a sign directing people to

the fair and rhododendron gardens and was worn out and faded. With the help of

garden staff, its director and volunteers, the

sign was redesigned, printed and installed to

help visitors with directions to the attractions

the fairgrounds has to offer.

Promotional Material

All of the promotional material that was coming from the Gardens or about the gardens

received a new look. This new identity was rebranding of the Gardens as a whole.

There are several different brochures on the gardens with no cohesive look.

(All Promotional Material Developed and Designed by Paul Hansen)

Banners

Additional signage was needed for the Gardens/Retail operation. This was to

increase the foot traffic in both the Gardens and Retail area. We needed to

direct the public from main entrance on Hwy. 76 up to the Gardens/Retail area.

o Garden Shop (3)

Brochures/Posters

With help from garden staff and director the Gardens received needed new look

with a more cohesive voice (one look) explaining what the Gardens are all

about. This in turn was the new Visitor Guide, Garden Membership brochure

and Memorial and Tribute brochure.

o Visitors Guide and Trail Map

o Membership Brochure

o Memorial and Tribute Brochure

o Volunteer Application

o Garden Poster

Garden Donations

This year the garden staff and director focused more on donations to the gardens than

ever before. With the help of large corporations and individuals the gardens were able

to improve upon the rebranding effort. This was started by having moved new structure

to the retail area of the garden. With the replacing of old and worn out elements in the

garden (white house door), painting of buildings, resurfacing old buildings to look new

again to adding additional plants to the garden, we have added a year round aspect.

The garden staff and director have set into place the change necessary to increase the

foot traffic need to make the garden financially stable.
