Sacco and Vanzetti and the Red Scare

Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the United States became concerned that Communism might spread to our country. Communism is the form over government whereby the businesses are controlled by the government and the government has control over a large aspect of the people’s lives. The United States was struck with a Red Scare, or a fear of communism and a relative witch-hunt ensued to find accused Communists, led by Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer.

Sacco and Vanzetti and the Red Scare

Nicola Sacco and Bartholomeo Vanzetti were Italian immigrants that were caught with weapons on their person after the shoe factory that they worked at was robbed and a guard was killed. After trial after trial, Sacco and Vanzetti were executed for murder of the guard. People claimed that the government was simply pinpointing immigrants with Communist or Socialist ties and prosecuting them. The men were killed in 1927 and the event shed light on the unjust nature of our government treating immigrants in an unfair manner.

The Carpathia arrived to assist survivors but, by that time, 1,514 of the ship’s passengers were dead.

A Dream Deferred by Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up

like a raisin in the sun?

Or fester like a sore--

And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

Or crust and sugar over--

like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags

like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?
