General introduction
• What is a Final Year Project Report (for designers)
• Document presenting the results of an ANALYTIC work
about the SETTING of a DESIGN PROBLEM
• So… the FYP report is not only an end in itself but also
means to an end.
• FYP report talks about itself and about FYP project
Proposal statement
• TITLE of your report !
• You need a working title to focus on throughout your FYP.
It may be that you will improve on the wording later but
make sure the title you begin with means something.
• Your statement should:
• Outline the problem
• Describe the nature and purpose of your research
• Indicate what you hope to achieve
Importance / Use
• Your PROJECT proposal must be delineated in terms of:
• Name of your project
• Short description of the context
• Importance of the project
• Sector of society concerned with the project
• Scope of the project
Aims
• Aims are:
• An intention or aspiration; what you hope to achieve.
• Aims are statements of intent, written in broad terms.
• Aims set out what you hope to achieve at the end of the
project.
• Your FYP report Aims might concern for example:
• Outlining the functions in such a project
• Determining the possible styles
• Developing a spatial program
• …
Objectives
• Objectives are:
• A goal or a step on the way to meeting the aim; how you
will achieve it.
• Objectives use specific statements which define measurable
outcomes
• Your FYP report objectives related to an aim of “Outlining the
functions” might concern for example:
• Conducting a literature review
• Analyzing the functions in similar buildings
• …
Methodolgy
• Methodology concerns the logical sequence of
procedural steps for achieving the objectives
• For example, what are the logical sequential steps to take in
order to achieve “case studies analysis” ?
• Choosing the cases
• Site visits
• …
Scope and limitations
• What you will do and what you will not do !
• Delimiting the extent of your investigation
• Type of building
• Interior – Exterior
• …
• Setting the boundaries of your investigation
• you may have too much material to cover so you will need to
put some limits in place on the project

constraints imposed by time, cost or availability of materials.
