    Ha&ard means a source or a situation with a 'otential (or harm in terms o( human injury or ill

    health, damage to 'ro'erty, damage to the en)ironment or a combination o( these%

    Ha&ard identi(ication means the identi(ication o( undesired e)ents that lead to the materiali&ation

    o( the ha&ard and the mechanism by which those undesired e)ents could occur% Identi(ying

    ha&ards in the wor*'lace in)ol)es (inding things and situations that could 'otentially cause harm

    to 'eo'le and to highlight the critical o'erations o( tas*s%

    +he 'ur'ose o( ha&ard identi(ication is to highlight the critical o'erations o( tas*s, that is, those

    tas*s 'osing signi(icant ris*s to the health and sa(ety o( em'loyees as well as highlighting those

    ha&ards 'ertaining to certain equi'ment due to energy sources, wor*ing conditions or acti)ities

    'er(ormed%

    a Health ha&ard

    Health ha&ard is an occu'ational health ha&ard is any agent that can cause illness to an

    indi)idual% A health ha&ard may 'roduce serious and immediate 1acute a((ects, or may

    cause longterm 1chronic 'roblems% All or 'art o( the body may be a((ected% #omeone with

    an occu'ational illness may not recogni&e the sym'toms immediately% 3or e4am'le, noise

    induced hearing loss is o(ten di((icult (or the a((ected indi)idual to detect until it is well

    ad)anced% Health ha&ards include chemicals 1such as battery acid and sol)ents, biological

    ha&ards 1such as bacteria, )iruses, dusts and molds, 'hysical agents 1energy sources

    strong enough to harm the body, such as electric currents, heat, light, )ibration, noise and

    radiation and wor* design 1ergonomic ha&ards%

    A sa(ety ha&ard is any (orce strong enough to cause injury, or damage to 'ro'erty% An injury

    caused by a sa(ety ha&ard is usually ob)ious% 3or e4am'le, a wor*er may be badly cut%

    #a(ety ha&ards cause harm when wor*'lace controls are not adequate%

    #ome e4am'les o( sa(ety ha&ards include, but are not limited to 5

    a sli''ing6tri''ing ha&ards 1such as wires run across (loors/b (ire ha&ards 1(rom (lammable materials/

    An en)ironmental ha&ard is a release to the en)ironment that may cause harm or

    deleterious e((ects% An en)ironmental release may not be ob)ious% 3or e4am'le, awor*er who drains a glycol system and releases the liquid to a storm sewer may not be

    aware, o( the e((ect on the en)ironment% 7n)ironmental ha&ards cause harm when

    controls and wor* 'rocedures are not (ollowed%
