CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BRIEF DESCRIPTION.
THIS IS A STATION IN THE WESTERN SUBURBAN RAILWAY LINE.
THIS STATION IS PREDOMINENTLY CHOSEN TO STUDYAND PREVENT
TRESPASSING THAT OCCURS LARGELY AT THE LEVELING CROSSING ADJACENT
TO THE SOUTHERN END OF THE PLATFORMS.
THIS STATION HAS IN ALL FOUR PLATFORMS.
KANDIVALI WEST IS LARGELY POPULATED AS COMPARED TO KANDIVALI EAST.
THERE IS A RAILWAY YARD ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE STATION WHICH IS
USED BY PEOPLE TO TRESPASS TO POISAR VILLAGE BEYOND THE YARD IN THE
EAST.
THERE ARE 2 FOBS. ONE AT SOUTHERN END AND OTHER AT MIDDLE OF
PLATFORM LENGTH.
THERE IS ONE ELEVATED TICKET WINDOW ON THE SOUTHERN FOB IN THE EAST.
THERE ARE TWO TICKET WINDOWS IN THE WEST
THE MAGNITUDE OF TRESPASSING PROBLEM AND THE REASONS OF TRESPASSING
AT KANDIVLI STATION HAVE BEEN STUDIED AT INCEPTION REPORT STAGE WHICH
HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO MRVC AND ALSO SUBMITTED AS INCEPTION REPORT.

1.2 PRIMARY SURVEY. THE FOLLOWING PHOTOS INDICATE THE OBSERVED TRESPASSING LOCATIONS.
Like you, this man too, had a dream.
Like you, he too pushed his way into the crowded train.
Like you, he too wanted to get going before he got
delayed.
But unlike you, he slipped and fell in the gap
between the train and the platform at Kandivali
stationand eight bogies went over him.
Within seconds the 12-coach train passed and the
man somehow came out, unhurt, but too shocked
to speak after his near-death experience.
Kandivali is one of the most populated areas in the
suburbs of Mumbai. The population is exploding.
Out of the 4, only 2 platforms take the maximum
load of the commuters.
The access points which are blocked have been
customized in order to serve the trespassers.

Platform no.4 has only 2 proper entrance/exit points.
Both are at the extreme ends of the platforms. And
mainline trains come mainly on platforms 1 and 2.
Thus east side residents find trespassing convenient.
As the railway has not provided people with
appropriate entrances, people find their way out on
their own. People do not find these entrances illegal
and if asked about exit points, they count these ones
in!
The closed level crossing now leaves huge unused area at the south end of platform no.2/3 where
trespassers wait while a train passes.

1.3 REASONS OF TRESPASSING AT KANDIVALI
THE HEIGHT OF THE FOB IS VERY HIGH AND HENCE IS UNCOMFORTABLE EVEN FOR
NORMAL HEALTHY PERSON TO USE IT.
NUMBERS OF FOBS ARE INSUFFICIENT TO CATER TO THE PEAK HOUR NEEDS OF
PASSENGER TRAFFIC LEADING TO LOT OF OVERCROWDING ON THE FOB ITSELF.
LACK OF FACILITIES FOR PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED PEOPLE & SENIOR CITIZENS;
LIKE ESCALATOR, RAMP, ETC.
SMALL RAMP AT BOTH THE ENDS OF THE PLATFORM ALSO ENCOURAGES
TRESPASSING.
LAST MINUTE ANNOUNCEMENT OF CHANGE IN THE PLATFORM SCHEDULE FOR
ARRIVAL / DEPARTURE OF THE TRAIN.
HUMAN SETTLEMENT ALONG THE TRACK ALSO LEADS TO REGULAR TRESPASSING
BY THE INHABITANTS.
EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES LIKE MEDICAL EMERGENCY, PERSON WITH HEAVY
LUGGAGE, ETC. LEADS TO COMPULSORY TRESPASSING.
RAG PICKERS ARE REGULAR TRESPASSERS.
INADEQUATE HEIGHT OF FENCING BETWEEN TRACKS ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO
JUMP FROM PLATFORM ON TO THE TRACK & CLIMB THE FENCING TO REACH THE
OTHER PLATFORM, THUS LEADING TO SERIOUS TRESPASSING.
POOR CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN EAST AND WEST NEAR LEVEL-CROSSING. FOR EG.
FLYOVERS, SKYWALKS, ETC. THE TIME TAKEN TO CROSS FROM EAST TO WEST AND
VICE-VERSA USING FLYOVER IS VERY HIGH DUE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC LEADING OR
FORCING PEOPLE TO USE LEVEL- CROSSING.
NO PROPER ACCESS PROVIDED TO HUMAN SETTLEMENTS DUE TO WHICH RESIDENTS
HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO USE RAILWAY TRACK CAUSING SERIOUS TRESPASSING.

IDENTIFICATION OF TROUBLE SPOTS
A DETAILED STUDY FOR IDENTIFICATION OF TROUBLE SPOTS WAS CARRIED OUT
BY OUR TEAM WITH RESPECT TO AFOREMENTIONED REASONS FOR TRESPASSING.

CHAPTER 3
SOLUTIONS
3.1 INTRODUCTION THE MAGNITUDE OF THE TRESPASSING PROBLEM AND THE REASONS OF TRESPASSING
AT KANDIVLI STATION HAVE BEEN STUDIED AT INCEPTION REPORT STAGE WHICH
HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO MRVC AND ALSO SUBMITTED AS INCEPTION REPORT.
IN PREVIOUS CHAPTER, TROUBLE SPOTS HAVE BEEN IDETIFIED WITH RESPECT TO
KANDIVALI STATION. HENCE SOLUTIONS TO DISCOURAGE TRESPASSING HAVE BEEN
WORKED OUT KEEPING IN MIND THE FOLLOWING FIVE MAIN POINTS:

3.2SOLUTIONS TO DISCOURAGE TRESPASSING AT KANDIVALI:
1. BARRICADES SHOULD BE PROVIDED BETWEEN ALL THE PLATFORMS EXTENDING
UPTO 100M ON NORTH AND SOUTH END OF THE STATION.
2. PROVIDE AN F.O.B. AT THE NORTHERN END JOINING ALL PLATFORMS.
PEOPLE TRESPASS FROM NORTHERN END OF PLATFORM NO. 1 TO 2/3 AND 4.
THIS IS BECAUSE MAJORITY OF THE BUS STOPS ARE LOCATED JUST OUTSIDE THE NORTH END OF
PLATFORM NO.1 LEADING TO PEOPLE USING THIS ENTRANCE.
3. PROVIDE TICKET WINDOW AT NORTHERN ENTRANCE/ EXIT AT PLATFORM NO.1
AT THE EXISTING TOILET SPACE.
SINCE THERE IS NO TICKETING FACILTY AVAILABLE AT THE AFOREMENTIONED ENTRANCE,
PASSENGERES ARE FORCED TO WALK TILL THE TICKET COUNTER AT THE MIDDLE ENTRANCE.
4. PROVIDE GREEN PATCH (50M) BEYOND NORTHERN END OF PLATFORM NO.1
TO PROHIBIT PEOPLE FROM ALIGHTING DOWN ONTO THE TRACKS.
5. PROVIDE GREEN PATCH (100M) BEYOND NORTHERN END OF PLATFORM NO. 2/3
TO PREVENT TRESPASSING FROM PLATFORM NO.2/3 TO 4 TOWARDS EASTERN SETTLEMENTS.
6. PROVIDE GREEN PATCH BEYOND THE SOUTHERN END OF PLATFORM NO.1, 2/3
AND 4 BY 100M.
7. EXTENDING THE EXISTING SKYWALK IN THE EAST TOWARDS WEST AND
CONNECT IT TO EXISTING SOUTHERNMOST F.O.B (ALREADY UNDER-
CONSTRUCTION)
THIS WILL REOPEN THE BROKEN LINK BETWEEN EAST AND WEST,CAUSED BY THE CLOSURE OF
THE LEVEL CROSSING.
8. WIDEN THE SOUTHERN F.O.B. BY 6M.
SO AS TO CAPACITATE MORE NUMBER OF PEOPLE AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO USE THE AMENITY.
9. PROVIDE CONTINUOUS COMPOUND WALL ON THE EAST AND WEST OF THE PLATFORMS THIS WILL PREVENT PEOPLE FROM TRESPASSING.
10. RAILING AT NORTH END OF PLATFORM NO.4.
EXISTING AMENITIES:
1. PLATFORM NO.1- FOUR COMMERCIAL STALLS, TWO DRINKING WATER, ONE
TOILET, ONE BOOK STALL.
2. PLATFORM NO.2/3- TWO TOILETS.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS/ADDITIONS AMENITIES:
