• Phrasal Verbs are very common; the meaning of a phrasal verb is usually very different from the meaning of the verb alone. Also, some phrasal verbs are intransitive (they cannot take an object); but the majority are transitive (they take an object).

CONDITIONALS

Conditionals describe the result that might happen or might have happened but did not.

Page 9: Final project grammar

04/26/2023 Magazine 9

THERE ARE FOUR KINDS • The zero conditional: This conditional is used

when the result will always happen.

( if + simple present, … simple present )Example:

If people eat too much, they get fat.

Page 10: Final project grammar

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL

• (If + simple present, … will + infinitive) : It is used to talk about things which might happen in the future.

Example :

If I take my umbrella, I won't get wet.

Page 11: Final project grammar

04/26/2023 Magazine 11

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL • ( If + simple past, … would + infinitive )

First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true or we can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible.

Example: If I won the lottery , I would buy a golden retriever.

THE THIRD CONDITIONAL

• (If + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle):

It talks about the past. It's used to describe a situation that didn't happen, and to imagine the result of this situation.Example:

If I had had time, I would have gone to the party.

REPORTED SPEECH

• We use reported speech when we are saying what other people say, think or believe.

• When we report someone’s words we can do it in two ways. We can use direct speech with quotation marks (“I work in a bank”), or we can use reported speech (He said he worked in a bank.)

• In reported speech the tenses, word-order and pronouns may be different from those in the original sentence.

Page 16: Final project grammar

04/26/2023 Magazine 16

EXAMPLES

•  Direct speech: “I travel a lot in my job” Reported speech: He said that he travelled a lot in his job.

• The present simple tense (I travel) usually changes to the past simple (he travelled) in reported speech.

PASSIVE VOICE

• Use passive forms when who or what causes the action is unknown or unimportant, or to put new information or longer expression later in the sentences.

The dog was found three days after it went missing.

PASSIVE VOICE

• FORM: Verb to be + past participle

This table is reserved for Hong Kong people.

As the emphasis is on the table, we start the sentence with ‘This table’ to attract readers’ attention to the receiver of the action.
