[email protected] (28 Sep 2015 19:28)For all editors:

I've noticed that the majority of the layuots are mainly using the color purple. If we could get away from this and use some of the other colors that were selected for this month, that would be great! I think it will help show some variation between each issue as we progress through the year.

Happiness, positivity, and good vibesBy Jake Dedekind

Staying positive is one of the best outlooks someone can have on life. It can change how a person lives and see things. Staying positive through high school can lead students to have a great year. Now, executing that may be a bit more difficult, but trying will still help.

When people are stuck, or dont exactly know what to do at times, taking a deep breath and saying itll be ok can help. Also, you can just smile and get through it; everything honestly will be ok.

By keeping an uplifting look on life, one will see changes. If someone tells themselves 'no', then that will be their outcome. If one says they cant do it, they wont.

Take that step and do it, and one will see success.Jake Foster a sophomore shares his perspective. He says I find myself having ups and downs. Occasionally I'll be very happy, and then Ill have those moments where I have no motivation to do anything. After taking a quick break and calming my self down, I listen to some music and just say its going to be ok.' I normally end up feeling better.

Positivity is a life changer, and taking that extra initiative can make a difference! Joshua Becker, a psychologist, performed studies and concluded that to have a better day, smile. He

explains that, ...people who smile as a result of cultivating positive thoughts can significantly and immediately improve their mood. Simply put, one easy way to improve ones mood right now is to recall pleasant memoriesand smile because of it.

Another junior, who requested to stay anonymous, shared a very personal story. He

said, We all encounter those days where we just feel sad, but my problem is I was always sad. So I went into drugs, drinking, and other terrible things. After this was going on for about a year, I just didnt know what to do with myself, so I started therapy. My therapist changed my life, and Im drug free and Ive never been happier. My therapist told me that if I stop overthinking everything, and really focus on the positives everything will change. I found this unbelievable and it was so difficult for me to do this. After a few months of trying this I saw the change. Everything

...if you want to discover more happiness in your life, make a point to surround yourself with joyful people.

changed, I see life in a whole new perspective.

Miracles can occur by surrounding yourself with good vibes and thoughts, it can change the perspective on life. Again, psychologist Joshua Becker has a study saying ...people who were surrounded by happy people were more likely to become happy in the future. So if you want to discover more happiness in your life, make a point to surround yourself with joyful people.

Depending on the people a person surrounds themself with, others can influence how they act, feel, or see things. The last person interviewed, as well wanted to stay anonymous because of the story they shared. When I went into high school, I surrounded myself with people who didnt make very smart choices. Those choices, Im still not proud of, but all my friends were doing it so I thought why dont I? They always acted depressed and when they got depressed, they went to drugs. So I did the same thing. After about a year and a half of this I never found myself happier, and as I slowly drifted from this group of friends. I found my life slowly changing for the better.

Although there can be a lot of dark times in a person's life, something positive can come out of it. It may be difficult to see it but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Many students get stressed out due to the heavy workload given by teachers, which may lead to a build up of Not Handed Ins (NHI's) and bad marks. The purpose of this column is to provide readers with alternative views on common problems that may arise. Interviewees include sophomores, McKenna Palmer and Myles Williams and senior Jenna Spedden.

Q: When it comes to managing your time, how do you approach the topic?A (M.P.): Staying away from procrastination and doing the homework assigned that same day A (S.M): [If possible] complete your assignments before any extra-curricular activities

Q: How can a student exemplify their leadership presence in class? A (M.P.): Lead any group discussions during class as well as answering as many questions as possible. By doing this Palmer becomes a dominant figure in class

Political poll

By Mark Skorija and Ahmad Frej

In America, anybody can get elected; out of all of the presidential candidates that fit in their political party, America has considered Kanye West, Waka Flocka, and of course, Donald Trump to become president. The school has students from a diverse set of cultures and backgrounds; the students political views can characterize the schools environment. With debates between friends and foes, students get interactive based upon politics. Knowing the students reasoning for supporting their preferred political party is more important than just knowing the party itself. Therefore, a poll was recently conducted based on the reasoning behind students' political beliefs. In this survey, approximately 103 Battlefield High School students were polled, but only 83 gave a substantial answer.

Approximately 83 students were surveyed

that the teacher or other students may fall back on when in need of help. A (M.W.): [By] setting a good example in class,

Q: How do you prepare before taking a test or a quiz?A (S.M.): [By making] flashcards

and an organized binder with tabs. Paying attention to the teacher in class helps as well. A (J.S.): [By] reading over [my] notes and trying to memorize them. This will help a student in that class because of going over taught material.

Q: How do you stay organized with schoolwork?A (M.W.): [By] writing all assignments in my agenda given to me. By doing this he can anticipate when his assignments are due, or when there are any upcoming tests. A (J.S): [By] planning out when to complete assignments and for how long. This helps students by allowing them to remember to complete all schoolwork.

National emergency nurse day

National Emergency Nurse day is commemorated to recognize all the hard work that emergency nurses do every single day.

According to nationaldaycalendar.com, National Emergency Nurse day is the second Wednesday in October (the 14th) and has been sponsored by the Emergency Nurses Association since 1989. This day is celebrated to say thank you to the emergency nurses for their hard work, dedication, service and commitment to their patients and families and their loyalty to the emergency nursing profession.

When some people think of what an emergency nurse looks like and does, they may think of the actors in shows like House or Greys Anatomy. However, not all nurses in the emergency setting have such a dramatic work life.English teacher Mr. Brown practiced nursing for three years in the operating room before discovering that the medical field was not right for him. His many experiences with this field have taught him that, Every single day on the job in the medical field you learn something new. You meet different patients that may have different conditions or problems and concerns, and whatever it is that they are dealing with, you have to change your mindset and help them.

Senior Lexi Redding has a special condition called Hereditary Angioedema (HAE). Unfortunately this requires her to go to the

hospital for IV treatments three times a week. During her time there she has really gotten to know the nursing staff. One good experience that stood out was one time when I wasnt feeling well one of my nurses, [like always,] put a smile on my face and [made] me not think about the pain, she said.

Some students like Redding have had experiences with nurses in hospitals, but not all people who respond to emergencies work in hospital rooms. Rachel Reerdon is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and works with a fire department in Prince William county. She was always interested in helping out others, and that led her to want to pursue a career in the medical field. I did ride alongs with the fire department when I was 14 years old, and just going to help someone out of bed or back into bed, and [making] a big difference in their life just really drove me to want to help people more. So I got my EMT certification first and eventually I took the big step to become a paramedic, she says. After she got her EMT certification, she started training to become a firefighter. When she got her

paramedic certification and passed the physical agility test, she was ready to take the next steps in her career.

Reerdon went through recruit school, and now she is on the fire truck and medic unit. She says that, When someone calls 911, you get that call that somebody is unconscious and you need to get out the door and get there fast; thats really motivated me to want to help people more and go through more education to ...better serve the community.

Reerdon adds, I know that sounds very cliche but its a big difference when somebody says Thank you, Youve really helped me or youve done CPR on somebody and they come to the firehouse to say You saved my life, thank you,. They bring us cookies and everybody has a great day. Emergency medical responders do so much to help others. Like Reerdon, they have dedicated their lives to serving the community, and doing things to help better the lives of those around them. On October 14, take a moment to give thanks to all of the emergency nurses on the job; it might just save their day.

Becca's Closet Non-profit dress organization By Kayla Coleman

Beccas Closet is an organization created by Rebecca Kirtman to provide formal dresses to high school students who would otherwise not be able to afford them. Beccas Closet is located in South Florida, but there is a Haymarket Chapter, in which Kelly Tinney is the Chapter Leader.

Sophomore Kelly Tinney is very passionate about this organization. Tinney says, I helped with Becca's closet when it started two years ago by collecting dresses. I was later asked if I wanted to take over as lead, and I eagerly accepted. Tinney now is the main collector for the Haymarket area area. She collects the dresses and helps deliver them to the girls who

contact her in need of a dress. I decided to get involved because I love helping people who are in need, it makes me really happy to help Tinney shares.

Many Battlefield students are buying fancy dresses for Homecoming and Prom. Junior Haley Norris says, A very popular website, right now, is promgirl.com because they have nice, cheap dresses. I would definitely consider wearing a second-hand dress because I love vintage clothing. Norris also shares that since she has been informed about the organization, she would consider donating some of her own dresses.

The Battlefield DECA Chapter has also been collecting formal dresses. When asked how

DECA got the dresses, Senior Gigi Schloss says, DECA had hundreds of dresses in our closet from old fashion shows that were donated to us years ago. DECA no longer plans fashion shows so we donated most of them [to Beccas Closet]. Senior, and Co-President, Katy Giesler helped collect and deliver the hundreds of dresses to Beccas Closet.

Anyone can get involved with this organization by either donating or buying dresses. In order to participate in Beccas Closet, Contact Kelly Tinney ([email protected]) or Mrs. Smith.

Sophomores Charis Haginikitas, Taylor Fricke, Brianna Burg recreate the costumes depicted in Mean Girls.SSa

Ah Halloween, a time for candy, pumpkins, hayrides, and of course that to die for" costume. Whether or not one takes their costume buying seriously, it seems like there are three main categories that people tend to fall into.

First there are the Overachievers". These are the people who take costume planning way too seriously. This person has their costume planned months in advance, and as soon as the costume catalog lands in their mailbox in July, they are plotting and scheming what to wear. They will scour through endless amounts of Pinterest boards looking for a unique and original" costume that no one else will have for sure. Oh and if they cannot buy what they want, one better believe that they will hand make it! They hit up Michael's Craft Shop and Joann

Fabric hard, and will probably make that $40 dollar costume someone else got from Spirit Halloween look like garbage.

Then of course there is the exact opposite. Mr. I'm too cool for a costume" or the girl who draws cat whiskers on her face and calls it a day. The classic bed sheet ghost is a go to for them. These people are called the fashion fails. This person waits until the very last second to pick out their costume, after all of the stores have sold out of their Halloween costumes and are starting to stock the shelves with Thanksgiving and Holiday items. Still they manage to find one item for their costume, maybe a fairy wand or a pirate eye-patch, and go to their party in a not so spectacular fashion.

Finally, there is the Halloween Hottie". This person, typically a female, aims to make heads turn at any costume party. They will dress up the simplest costume, and turn anything professional, into something paired with fishnet tights and red lipstick. Then of course there is the guy who abuses the costume privilege, and just uses this chance to not wear a shirt.

These are not the only types of people on Halloween but there are a few honorable mentions. The

The types of people you see on Halloween

first one is the person who tried their best, but just did not succeed. They worked so hard on their witches costume, only for people to look at it and say Wow, um, what are you?. Another honorable mention are The Squad. These people put a ton of effort into transforming into their favorite group like the Power Rangers or the Spice Girls. The annoying thing about them is that they stay in their little pack. For the entire party these people will stick together and make it clear that no one else is good enough for their group. The last honorable mention is, that guy who gets way too into character. Now Halloween is a time to transform into someone else, but remember you are not the character, and it is not the end of the world if you stop acting like Jack Sparrow for 5 minutes.

Halloween is a fun festive celebration that really shows off ones creative side. Whether they dress more like a Regina George or a Cady Heron, the iconic characters from Mean Girls, when it comes to costumes the possibilities are endless and as long as everyone is having fun, that is what really matters.

Logistics-Ticket prices range from $15 to $50 (Haunted Hallows being the lowest and Shocktober the most)-All are typically open every weekend of October

In the eerie spirit of Halloween many people take this time to indulge in the horror associated with the holiday. However, there is a much more direct route to take besides holing up and watching some horror classics; going straight to the source. In the NOVA area there is a multitude of offerings, ranging from haunted hayrides to creepy corn mazes. One of the most well known attractions is COX farms which houses a Zombie Farm themed hayride, the Fields of Fear haunted corn maze, and new this year; The Forest: Back 40, which has yet to be described but is assumed to be a haunted hike. COX farms also has activities for the fainter hearted located in their Fire Grounds which includes a giant slide and festive games. Shocktober, located in Leesburg, is another ghostly attraction. Although there is limited information out about this particular Haunted House it has nearly 5 stars on review website, Yelp". Paxton Manor allows attendants to be lead through intricately decorated, themed hallways where they will meet ghoulish actors to increase the haunted houses fear factor. Shocktobers website recommends that attendants be over 13 years old because All attractions are designed to be interactive, extremely scary and intense; they are all PG-13. Haunted Hollow takes attendees through an elaborately decorated old farm house where they will hear

the gruesome tales of the people who lived there. The Farm at Maple Tree Lane haunted house also recommends that those under the age of 13 have an adult with them. Washington DC has its own brand new fear factor event, Scream City. Located at the RFK stadium they offer two indoor high-end state of the art haunted houses with separate themes. This year's attractions are Exorcism Estate and Slaughter Factory, both with chilling backstories. Kings Dominion offers a slightly more extravagant venue for their Halloween Haunt horror fest. Especially made for thrill seekers, this event allows attendees to wander through the intricately decorated park filled with actors waiting to scare between riding rides. Halloween Haunt is paired with The Great Pumpkin Festival, a family friendly Charlie Brown autumn celebration. However, Haunt attractions include a vampire themed dance club, corn maze, gorey doll haunted house, and six other frightening exhibits. When it comes to thrill seeking Halloween festivities, NOVA has an abundance of options that will satisfy anyones desire for haunting fun!

In the eerie spirit of Halloween many people take this time to indulge in the horror associated with the holiday. Volleyball madness Photo courtesy of Victor O'Neil

By Jay Kim and Luis Marte

Battlefield High School continues their winning ways. The Varsity Volleyball Team is in the middle of a potentially very successful season. It may be the season where the girls' talent, hard work, and strong bond take them all the way to a state championship. After appreciating the teams talents from afar, senior Skyler Sisk shares the inside scoop. Sisk, a leader on the varsity, offered great insight on the very talented team. Skyler offers some interesting thoughts on how last year's team compares to this year, I definitely think this year we have really good team chemistry and we work really well together. We had good chemistry last year as well, but right now I feel like were being pushed really hard in practice. We have a

new coach and it makes everything really different, but I think we push through together... says Sisk.

The new coach, Mackenzie Tingle, brings a new culture to the Volleyball team and immediately makes a force to be reckoned with. A close to undefeated record is impressive for any coach, and it appears what Coach Tingle is doing, is working.

The new team has impressed many, but the work ethic of the team, really stands out to Sisk. What has really impressed me is how hard we can push ourselves, through the toughest practices, we work together and get our job done. she says. An experienced player like Sisk knows what it takes to win. Her answer to how to win a state championship is simple, Practicing all the time will

definitely be helpful. We also need to not get in our emotions when we mess up.

The success of the team did not happen overnight. Skyler speaks on the progression,[I] think at the beginning we had no team chemistry at all. We didnt know each other. Now we have come to know...[each other]

Expectations for the Volleyball team are sky-high this year, and Sisk has high aspirations for the team. I hope to get a banner in the gym. Right now we dont have one, and every other sport has a district championship or something. We havent got one yet but I think we are going to get one this year. says Sisk

The appeal of cross country

Sophomore Jaylin Kimble runs in the blazing heat at her meet.

Cross Country, a sport not loved by all, a sport that only involves running. Why would anyone do it? Not many do, there are few who find enjoyment in the sport. What do they like about it that others do not?

You just go out there, dressed in good running clothes, thats all you need, the clothes on your back and shoes. I guess thats why I like it, you can do it... anytime, anywhere..., says junior Jack Baker. For football, athletes need padding and a helmet. For soccer, cleats and shinguards are required. However, for a sport like Cross Country, there is no equipment needed. There is no other sport that compares., not track, its close counterpart, because even track runners need spikes. To be able to perform well without any necessary equipment is a special quality that Cross Country has.

Even though Cross Country is a team sport, a lot of it is based off personal effort. Baker says, Im going through the same thing everybody else is going through... were all nervous before that race, were all hurting during running that course... Its tough but we just bear with each other, [and] form

friendships through common suffering. It is difficult for a person to keep pushing, but the back-up of the team is something that can convince someone to carry on. The team keeps pushing each other so that they all can improve and enjoy being a member of team.

Usually when Im in pain I feel like I dont wanna run but I know I have to and I know it will make me better, just fight through the pain, says senior Zach Schwehm. Cross Country can be very difficult to compete in at times. An ability to keep going, even without the support of their teammates, is necessary, and can be rare to come by in most people. Cross Country runners seem to have this attribute.

Cross Country is a competitive sport, like many sports. So along with a supportive environment, a team needs to be competitive too. Battlefields Cross Country team finds a way to accqure this quality, while still enjoying the sport.

Were all connected throughout the races, we like

seeing how people improve and it's almost a competition between each other, we just wanna see who can beat the next [runner], just make it all competitive and fun to be around, says Schwehm. I get to hang out with my friends a lot and I just get to get better at running, says freshman Andrew Maggs. Part of what makes it desirable for the runners is the team atmosphere. Everyone is friendly with one another, it is a supportive environment in which everyone can improve and enjoy the experience of being a part of the team.

All of these attributes contribute to the appeal of Cross Country, at least to the members of the team. The simplicity of the sport, the camaraderie of the team, and seeing themselves and the rest of the team improve all add interest as well. Each of the runners have a different view on what the advanates of the sport is, but the end result is still the same, the appeal is there for all of them.

The wolfpack offanny packs

Three seniors are bringing the pack back

Looking around at Battlefield every year, the average student can spot all sorts of trends, fads and unique student behaviors. They may not have any rhyme, reason, or significance, but most of the time, lack of reason is irrelevant. People do what they do, and this year, one fad sticks out as bigger, and bolder. Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing the fanny pack. Worn by Seniors Jake Agnos, Oakley Herrewig and Parker Baddley, the wearing of these packs have left students in a mixture of awe, curiosity and confusion.

The fanny pack by definition, is a small pouch worn around the waist that can carry any small items that are possibly thinkable, such as money, flash drives, pencils, etc. They are often worn by tourists in foreign countries as a way to keep valuables out of pockets, and for random people to keep small supplies at hand. Throughout Battlefield, many students have taken notice of the three seniors fad and simply wondered, why?

According to Herrewig, the inspiration for the accessory comes from a former Battlefield graduate and Agnos older brother, John.

Elephant protection slipping awayBobcats discuss the mistreatment of elephants in Africa and how we can help

Imagine a world without elephants, imagine your kids never getting the chance to see all of the beautiful animals this world has to offer.

Around the world the protection of animals is slowly slipping away. For ages the Japanese have been hunting whales and have driven them to the edge of extinction. Recently, a lion was killed in africa, Cecil the lion and was hunted and killed, and the world was furious that such a beautiful creature was treated so terribly and its life was taken unjustly. Another issue that is set in Africa is the killing of elephants by the thousands.

African and middle eastern terrorists are slaughtering these majestic creatures and are selling the tusks to the Chinese and using the money to fund their terror attacks on various countries.

Currently, a few producers from the US have come together to create a film exposing these realities, calling it Last Days. This short film is all about the elephants in Africa, and what harm is coming

to them. So far, the U.S. government has not taken any action to stop the killings.

Freshman Madison Hollingsworth says, Although the killing of elephants is awful, I dont think [the U.S] should do anything because [it may be more harm than its worth].

On the other hand, freshman Jayden Page says, We should sent funds over to help Africa with this problem. he also states, Its not right that theyre killing and poaching animals.

Another group in Africa has started using permanent ink and painting the elephants trunks pink. This makes their ivory invaluable and no harm is done to the elephant. Many fundraisers have been created for this cause but it is just not enough. This issue is bigger than people realize.

According to CNN , over 60 game wardens have been murdered by these terrorists who are killing the elephants. An elephant is killed every 15 minutes, that is 96 elephants killed each day. Over 30,000 elephants are

killed each year by poaching. At this rate experts say that elephants will be extinct in just 11 years. Al-Shabbab, The Lords Resistance Army, Boko Haram, and Janjaweed are all Islamic terrorist groups that were part of a report given to the UN Security Council about criminal poaching activity primarily targeting elephants.

Freshman Sidney Werth states, Have a [real] purpose if you are going to kill an animal.Individuals can get involved too and help spread awareness. Go to http://www.lastdaysofivory.com/ watch the film and donate to end ivory funded terrorism.

When speaking about the seniors inspiration, Herrewig said that by the older Agnos wearing one, the younger group of guys saw wearing fanny packs as cool and an essential for school. Jake Agnos, on the other hand, credited the inspiration to simply a moment of epiphany over the summer, saying,

it felt as if a greater power like sent us a message telling us that it was our calling to bring the fanny pack back.

Why the pack?, Jake Agnos was all over the question saying, you cant find another steal out there with more of a bang for your buck. Without a doubt the best purchase of my life. Like Agnos, Baddley praised it, saying, I think the main reason I wear my fanny pack is the convenience of it. I havent lost any pencils this year, it keeps everything in good reach.

Obviously thrilled, Baddley,

Agnos and Herrewig see the usage of the packs as long term. About how long students are expected to see the pack in action, Herrewig states boldly, probably all year. Maybe not consistently all year, but off-and-on. Although once being called conceited for wearing their packs, Baddley focuses on the

positives, saying, a lot have come to love it (the packs) and look forward to it every day, and, we dont let the haters bring us down. Just out here trying to enjoy senior year. Regardless of reception, the senior guys are seriously enjoying pack fad, doing things such as

secret fanny pack handshakes when they see each other in the halls.

Bobcats, get ready, because the pack has made a comeback. What may seem to be a completely random fad is grasping the attention of students all over school at an alarming rate. Who knows, maybe soon we will see even more fanny packs roaming the halls of Battlefield, more people doing fanny pack handshakes, and more people joining in on a fad that will undoubtedly go down in Bobcat history.

Stacked Classes

As students progress through their high school career, they find their classes becoming more difficult. Starting sophomore year, students are allowed to take Advanced Placement classes. These courses give students the opportunity to gain college credits prior to their college career. A lot of students make the decision to take more than one AP class to get a feel for college courses, and sometimes this can lead to having those classes on the same day or even back to back. Each AP class requires a lot of work not only outside of the class, but during it. At the end of class, students can find themselves mentally exhausted and by having one or two more that day, they can be left feeling completely drained by the time the bell rings.

As students make the decision to take as many AP courses as possible, they have no control over when their classes will be scheduled. Unless they are a put in the wrong class they cannot change their schedule. Some students have learned to enjoy having their AP classes on one day, while others still despise it. While senior Noah Kim likes ...having most of my AP classes in one day, senior Katy Giesler does not. ... like it at all. Calculus is hard

for me and I have to focus more in that class than I usually would in others. Then I go to French and again, for languages especially, I have to focus Students are sitting in AP classes from anywhere between two hours and forty minutes to five hours every other day. As the time starts running down, so do students attention spans.

With a many AP classes comes a lot of projects and homework. Eventually, this can lead to having assignments due on the same day. With extracurricular activities it can become difficult for students to try and manage their time. Kim says that, Once all the big projects pile up on one day then you have to know which class you need the grade most in and which class you can get the worst grade in. Its a balance kind of thing. As more assignments are given it makes it more difficult for students to do their work. Giesler explains that, ...sometimes too much all at once from Calc and French will give me a headache and then the work just becomes harder. Sometimes stress can keep a student from performing at their fullest potential, whether it is during classes, after school doing homework or at sports games.

There are positive sides to having AP classes on one day, an

easy day. The days that students have regular classes can give them a bit of a break. With less homework and projects, these days can take stress off of students. Kim says that he has, four AP classes this year so I mostly just prepare for the days I have the back to back AP [classes]. After that day its kind of a one day break for me. Although some students may like having one day of easy classes, those difficult days can take a toll on students. Giesler says, I go home exhausted after black days with loads of homework and then I go to work The unbalanced days affect the amount of homework given each night The inconsistency can be detrimental to a students ability to get on a set schedule during the school year, but it can also give students a chance to get ahead on homework. Stuffed with information, students with back to back AP classes can leave school feeling overwhelmed and worn out. While some students would opt for a more balanced schedule, others enjoy having an easier day. Depending on the opinions of students, dealing with two or more AP classes in a row varies immensely. It is all depends on how many activities, inside and outside of school, that a student takes on.

Battlefields specialty program, IT (Information and Technology), has caught many students eyes and in turn has helped them prepare for their future. The IT program at BHS holds many high honors and is a prized program to the school .Junior Keara Gadoury chose to go to Battlefield as opposed to her originally-planned private school because she heard about the internationally renowned program that the school offered. Gadoury strongly believes that what she has learned will help her throughout her life, especially in the work force. Sophomore Alyiah Desauntels combined her lifelong love of the arts and technology and became a transfer student in the

award-winning IT program, a program her zoned-school (Stonewall Jackson) did not offer. Both students agreed that the IT program will serve them well in the future.

The IT program is not just for students aspiring to be in the technological field. Students, such as Sophomore Johannah Suegay , do not believe they will pursue a career directly in the IT field. However, they do believe that the information they learned will suit them well in their future career. She believes that being highly knowledgeable about technology will benefit everyone in whatever field they decide to pursue. IT student, Junior Jamie Pangilinan states, I like that the program

opens up many opportunities for IT- related clubs, college credits, and certification exams. The IT program gives you valuable knowledge and opens up many doors to your future.

Another student, Sophomore Samra Beyene, is part of the IT program solely because of her love for technology and aspirations to pursue a career in the field of technology, but she believes that it would serve her well in any workforce. The IT program is not just for those who want become a technology or information specialist, but instead those who want valuable knowledge that will last a lifetime.

Battlefield students had an array of different responses to their career path survey. Some of which were police officers, biologists and even astronomers! But most of the students that said yes to the survey, are more then likely to not pursue that career. Time changes people as they become adults; their passions and perspectives change. Of the Battlefield students that said yes according to U.S. News Educations only 44 of the 124 students made the right decision. For the students that said no, they can take comfort in knowing that the majority of their peers that said yes are ultimately wrong in their decision.

Two years ago when the journalism program began publishing a monthly magazine, our goal was to run articles students can relate to, learn from, and feel entertained by. Previous to the 2013- 14 school year, the students enrolled in journalism I, II, and III would write and edit articles and print them in a newspaper. However, the journalism program rapidly expanded, which meant it was time to update the publication. Since January 2014, journalism students have produced magazines and distributed them to homerooms free of charge every month.

Inside 15000 is a completely student-run publication and is structured just like a professional magazine staff. This school year, for the first time ever, there are three blocks of journalism classes. While each year journalism students learn from a curriculum, the main selling point and focus of the class is creating the magazine. First year students learn the fundamentals of journalistic writing and submit the majority of articles that are run. Second year students can either remain staff writers and continue pursuing their writing talents or they can apply to become a section editor. Section editors are the backbone of the publication and are in charge of editing articles, helping first year students, and laying out the magazine. Being an editor as opposed to a second year writer introduces a new element of journalism: page layout design. If students continue into the third year of journalism, they have the very special opportunity to apply to become a co editor-in-chief, business manager or design editor, or can choose to

remain a section editor. The business manager, senior Justin Michna, overlooks advertising campaigns, organizes our funds and plans Open Mic Nights- which is our main source of income for producing the magazine. The journalism program is self-sufficient and raises all funds independently to print the magazine, which is why we like to dedicate a portion of our magazine to thank our patrons and advertisers.

The design editor, senior Elizabeth Wheeler, looks over the visual side of the magazine and creates the aesthetic of the magazine by helping delegate design rules and choosing colors to match the theme. The design editor plays a very important role in keeping our magazine branded and consistent.

There are two editors-in-chief who share central authority over the magazine and make decisions about theme, structure, advertising, business inquiries, selection of articles, design rules, and are also in charge of leading section editors and staff writers. The editors-in-chief consist of one junior, Kirsten Dezeeuw, who has at least two years of journalism experience and has held previous editorial status and a senior, McKenna Roper, who has completed three years of journalism, has been a section editor and served one year as editor-in-chief already.

While much of the BHS newsmagazine is produced in the classroom, many ambitious writers and editors dedicate time outside of school to perfect our publication. Editors spend time after school meeting to plan the magazine and also staying late, sometimes even 9

With a new year starting back up, there is a sense of new Bobcat pride in the school. Sure, upperclassmen still joke about the freshies and juniors still stress about the SAT exam, but there is a lot going on at Battlefield. The fall is filled with home games on Friday where the drumline marches through the halls, and the homecoming proposals people saw every other day. Classes are still new and exciting, and students are once again making the most of the "best four years of your life".

It is easy to become overwhelmed while getting readjusted to a new school year. Getting used to homework again and practicing time management is never easy to do. As the level of curriculum gets higher, grades become an increasingly important focus in kids lives. With APs, specialty classes, and everything in between, a large portion of time is spent on homework and studying.

However, high school is not all work no play. As usual, sports are a hit and many students are getting involved in other activities like Dance Team and Key club.

A new school year means a new beginning and new opportunities. Take advantage of the time with friends, but do not forget about other things that matter. Make some memories, and make it a good year.
