Thursday, June 25, 2015 Engaging Children’s Imaginations by Teaching Them Lots and Lots of Useless Knowledge Kieran Egan Room 2306/9, June 25, 9C10:00 am Dr. Kieran Egan is a professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University, as well as a coCdirector and founder of the Imaginative Education Research Group. He is regarded as an influential contemporary thinker in the field of education, both for his contributions to educational theory and his development of educational programs that apply theory within the classroom. His research interests include education and curriculum theory, conceptions of development in education, and the way cognitive tools shape learning and understanding. A major focus of his work has been the development of Imaginative Education, an innovative approach to education that focuses on engaging the imaginations of learners in order to build more meaningful and lasting understandings of curriculum. Dr. Egan holds a B.A. in History from London University and a Ph.D. in Education from Cornell University. Session 1 10:10E10:55 am Paper #116: Rethinking "Respect" as an Academic Concept: A Sociocultural Perspective on Inferential Engagement in Teacher Education Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur Room 2131, June 25, 10:10C10:55 am The purpose of this paper is to inquire into the role of inference in the development of academic concepts with particular attention to the context of teacher education. The difficulty surrounding the teaching of concepts like “respect,” “democracy,” and “social justice,” the mainstay of foundational coursework in teacher education, has been the subject of research for decades and persists as a shortcoming of teacher education programs. Rethinking the development of concepts from a Vygotskian perspective that rebalances the relationship between inference and reference may be one way of theorizing this difficulty and developing ways to move beyond it. Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur is Associate Professor of Human Development, Learning, and Culture at UBC. Her scholarly interests include learning from young people about their participation in alternative contexts, as well as how this is mediated by adults. Her research draws on Vygotskian approaches to learning and teaching, critical theory, ethnographic methods, and critical discourse analysis.

children!(aged!4!and!5)!about!sustainability!and!our!local!forest!we!must!begin!by!engaging!in!philosophical!inquiry!(EPI)!that!addresses!human!

and!non\human!existence!and!metaphysical!conceptualizations.!During!our!session!we!will!present!a!pedagogical!documentary!(video)!that!will!

demonstrate!our!approach!with!young!children!drawing!on!the!children’s!EPI!themes!of!power,!reality!and!the!existence!of!dragons.!Come!and!
