Goals

Established in 1974 as a church plant from First Baptist Church of Edmond, Waterloo Road has been a powerful force in the community in Edmond and the surrounding areas. The most resonating message one can receive from the members and staff, “we come in to go out,” a message that is evident in the many community projects which recently have included yearly trips to Mexico during the summer. The goal will always remain to be in the service of God and other people. With the addition of a service, Waterloo has entered into a different demographic by introducing the classic and modern style worship services. This was done to accommodate the young families and youth that attend as well as offer a chance to expand their musical style using non-traditional instruments and song selection.

The goals that David Raney, Media Ar ts Director has set for the design of church are focused on clarity. The church experience begins the moment a visitor or member drives up to the church and sees the digital sign which displays information about upcoming events. The brand experience is derived from a professional atmosphere encompassing printed materials, website design, logos, sign animations, facebook pages and Sunday morning slides and worship presentation.

1. Copiers are always different. But it is a better color indicator than the screen and it is impor tant to always print a proof.2. When in doubt, sketch it! I learned the importance of using hand skills to sketch out initial ideas.3. “Whiteboarding” helps us focus. Brainstorming is impor tant to gain insight and develop ideas quickly and without judgment.4. Jimmy Fallon is the only comedian worth watching.5. Communication is key. Getting insight from other people improves work and clarity.6. Research is vital. So many churches are doing what we are doing, how can we stand out?7. Humor is the best stress-relief. OverallExperienceMy experience at Waterloo Road has been an ideal learning environment in which I have been challenged and inspired to continue to develop my skills in design. This internship has also allowed me to experience the collabora-tive experience that is present in a work environment in which collabora-tion with other creatives is key to developing concepts and thinking about the entire experience that Waterloo offers. I enjoyed working on projects that would make a difference in people’s lives and would allow them to gain new perspective on the church through clear, effective design that seeks to constantly update; challenging the old-fashioned and stagnant mentality. These last few hours I have been saving f iles and helping in the develop-ment of future projects in order to aid in those efforts.
