Although 2019 was an eventful year, commodity prices exhibited relative stability. On oil, neither the September attack on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities nor OPEC’s recent deci-sion for additional cuts had a lasting impact on oil prices. Similarly, in agriculture, neither the outbreak of the African Swine Fever (which decimated China’s hog stocks) nor trade frictions moved food markets in a big way: the food price index ended the year where it began. On metals, Vale’s accident earlier in the year and Indonesia’s nickel export ban pushed prices up. But, in both cases prices came down. Ample supplies across most commodity sectors, weak demand, and low price levels are expected to keep commodity prices rangebound during 2020 as well.

The design of new ammonia plants today is done with increasing attention being paid to energy efficiency. Current and future environmental concerns and high energy prices will ensure that this trend becomes pushed even more into the main focus. These considerations were typically not of great concern back when old ammonia plants were designed and built long ago. Plants with low efficiency, however, must compete with modern ammonia plants that are much more efficient. Fortunately, it is possible to retrofit older plants using modern technology, which allows the older plants to be run with less energy. In this way, the older plants can better compete on the global stage, and remain profitable for many years into the future, while minimizing the environmental impacts.

The fertilizer industry and in particular the ammonia and urea industry are truly global. There are hundreds of production sites distributed around the world and several export hubs selling products into all corners of the globe. How prices develop is thus a question for how the global operating rate performs. This question is by and large determined by the relatively simple balance between global capacity and demand development. On a regional basis however the picture can vary quite substantially and is influenced by the changing political and economic situation in each region, respectively. The production level in each region also determines global trade flows. With climate change pressure intensifying, the States and the corporates alike are compelled with an ever-increasing urgency to adopt deeper and wider sustainable ways in their sphere of activities. The fertilizer industry is under a greater spotlight as it is not only a major natural resources consumer but it has an infamous distinction of contributing to more than 1% of global CO2 emission.
Confronted with some stark choices of regulatory penalization and potential risks of a market censure, the fertilizer industry is at an important juncture to reinvent its benign contributions of feeding the world responsibly. The industry is actively in a pathway to embrace green substitutions, circular economy concepts and even adoption of some of disruptive technologies. Amongst such disruptive technologies, the green ammonia is one of the front-runners.
This paper will discuss on what green ammonia is and how it (green ammonia) fits into the existing fertilizer value chain and on how it opens up some new opportunities. It explains on a potentially transformational opportunity for fertilizer manufacturers in contributing to the transitioning and decarbonizing of the energy and utility supply systems.
The paper also looks at the fundamentals on why green ammonia is getting such an attention as it never have had. Finally, the paper touches upon the challenges and structural and policy areas for making a success of it.

Growing world population, increasing wealth and the desire for protein are key drivers for climate change and pollution. World leaders have announced drastic CO2 reduc-tion targets on latest world climate conferences. In order to reach lower CO2 emission targets, nations have established incentive programs or have introduced CO2 taxes.
The trend of “green” energy installation is uninterrupted and is further increasing. Specific Capital Expenditures for wind and solar energy systems are declining for years and these systems are also getting more efficient resulting in constantly declining energy cost, especially in African region due to high availability. These are the facts, which make renewable energy interesting also for other applications such as fertilizer production either as part of revamp or as new plant.
Renewable energy as feedstock makes plants also independent of natural gas. That fact makes this concept also interesting for certain African regions, where gas is not or not constantly available.

For any society, the issue of food security is a central and strategic issue, because food is one of the most basic and necessary needs for every human being, and it must be met in appropriate and stable amounts in an accessible manner. Hence, the issue of food and food security occupied a wide area of international concerns, particularly the Arab countries, The results of that con-cern were the establishment of regional institutions, led by the Arab Organiza-tion for Agricultural Development, to contribute to this vital activity. The report of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (thirtieth version), on the status of Arab food security for the year 2018 CE, indicates positive results com-pared to previous years, where the value of the main food commodity gap in the Arab region decreased from about (34.69) billion dollars in 2017 to about (33.58) One billion dollars in 2018. Chemical fertilizers are considered one of the most important factors of the crop service that contributed to increasing agri-cultural production and improving its quality. Rather, achieving the highest production per unit area depends on it as a specific factor in many cases. Scientific statistics indicated that the fertilizer factor constitutes about 50% of the entire agricultural process, as the commitment With the assigned scientific doses and the correct addition times and methods according to the recom-mendations issued by the competent authorities lead to achieving the desired results in production.
Excessive use of chemical fertilizers that contain nitrogenous substances may lead to cancerous diseases and reach through wastewater to river and ground-water, used for drinking water. Excessive use of fertilizers also increases pollution in both soil and water due to the harmful elements that fertilizers leave in the soil and in wastewater.

Any material that delivers required nutrients essential for the plant growth is considered a fertilizer. They can be organic or inorganic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers are substances that are derived from the remains or by products of organisms. Organic fertilizers provide the nutrients and organic compounds to the soil and enhance soil physical properties. Their nutrients contents are low and unbalanced. Inorganic or mineral fertilizers on the other hand are manufactured from various chemical substances and contain nutrients at the desired concentration and ratio that suit the plant require-ment, provide nutrients to the plants immediately and can be easily obtained by the farmers at reasonable price. The proper use of both sources enhance the yield and soil fertility and productivity, their misuse however, may result in negative impact on the environment and public health. The major advantages and disadvantages of organic and inorganic fertilizers will be discussed

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development puts forward a transformational vision recognizing that our world is changing, bringing with it new challenges that must be tack-led and overcome if we are to live in a world without hunger, food insecurity and malnu-trition in any of its forms. More than 820 million people in the world are still hungry today, underscoring the immense challenge of achieving the Zero Hunger target by 2030. This presentation will highlight some of the work of FAO and its Global Soil Partnership (GSP) towards food and nutrition security, through the sustainable management of our global soil resources. This includes FAO’s flagship work and publications on the State of Food and Agriculture and the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World. The work of the GSP, a globally recognized mechanism for the promotion of sustainable soil manage-ment, will then be presented, with a focus on the recently published International Code of Conduct for the Sustainable Use and Management of Fertilizers or the Fertilizer Code. This document was developed as a way to assist countries address the multiple and com-plex issues related to the responsible use and management of fertilizers in agriculture at the farm, ecosystem and national level. The Fertilizer Code also aims to address issues of a global perspective in terms of contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include ensuring sustainable food production systems, ending hunger and malnutrition, enhancing food security and nutrition, reducing pollution, and improving food safety. The Fertilizer Code addresses the judicious use and management of fertiliz-ers to prevent inappropriate use, underuse and overuse of fertilizers. It provides a locally adaptable framework and voluntary set of practices with which governments, the fertiliz-er industry, agricultural extension and advisory services, supporting academic and research institutions, actors in the nutrient recycling industry, civil society and end-users can contribute to sustainable agriculture and food security from a nutrient manage-ment perspective by following or adhering to the guidelines and recommendations provided. This presentation will explore the different ways that the Fertilizer Code and its recommendations could be implemented.

Arable lands are declining every year. Since 1960 they declined by half. Middle East North Africa regions are witnessing soils degradation driven by a combination of factors including population growth and accompanied increased pressure on land, climate change, inappropriate agricultural management practices and inadequate investment in soil conservation and rehabilitation. The people fed per ha increased from 1960 from 2 people to 4 people in 2005 and if we continue with the same trend it will reach more than 5 people by 2030. By 2050, agricultural production must increase by 70% globally – if we maintain current production and consumption patterns. Meet-ing future food needs of a growing population required unconventional solutions.

Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM)

PROM is produced by co-composting (or mixing) organic matter/manure with high grade (32% p2o5 +or- 2%) rock phosphate mineral in fine (min. 80% finer than 74 microns) size. Addition of phosphate solubilizing microorganism enhances the effect.
Certain types of rock phosphates of sedimentary origin are applied to acidic soils as fertilizer directly. Recent research in India showed that high grade rock phosphate in fine size when used as a mix with organic manure works as efficiently as di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) in alkaline soils. The rock phosphate from Jhamarkotra mine in India showed good agronomic efficien-cy when used as Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM) ,not only shows equal resid-ual effect but also very effective in the saline soil where DAP is not at all effective.Research efforts since last 16 years show that PROM is as efficient as any other chemi-cal phosphatic fertilizer.

Misr Phosphate Company: Established in 2009, Misr Phosphate is one of two major companies producing phosphate rock in Egypt with a production capacity of 5 million tons per year from one of the largest reserves in the world “Abu-Tartour mine” On the other hand the company operates and owns other mines in “El-Sebaayah” located in the Eastern area of the Nile, where it increased it’s production capacity of Phosphate rock.
