SWOT Analysis

S W

O T

Long historical background and strong historical values as it has been through many stages of change

gathering place, market, social.

Easily accessible as it is in the centre of the campus.

As the University continues to change, new problems arise throughout time. Thus, continual changes are required.

Limited space leads to crowding and noise especially during lunch hours and market days.

As new issues arise throughout time, this opens up opportunity for new designs.

Utilise the centre area of the site during the cooler months, as this part of the site still is exposed periodi-cally to the sun.

Crowded and noisy.

Strong winds especially in the South-western area.

Secluded at night, very quiet and lacks sense of security.

SWOT ANALYSIS

01 | SITE

For the SITE assigment, I looked at the ACTION that is happening around the union lawn. Union lawn is widely used for a social open space where students and others can interact with others. The population intensity shown on the left was recorded on Wednesday.

The photographs were taken on Wednesday when the food market is held. The recordings and observations showed that the population intensity was quite high during the 11am and 3pm time interval. Students and other visitors enjoyed the food, drink, as well as other social activities including having conversations with others and doing club activities.

Observation analysis and future projecion for the Union lawn.

This spatial composition model is inspired by the Japanese origami artt. Series of triangle surfaces stuck together to create a unique space experi-ence. This work focuses on the ‘surface’, like the waffle and gridshell forms, but with different transparency, in this case, non-transparent surface.

This landform incorporates both extrusion and subtraction from the surface of the land, creating a repetition of stepping and tilting in the area. This incline of surfaces gives smaller spaces at different levels, creating more of a ‘private’ space within the open, land area.

The twin sisters, Ava and Abby, were always together. They always played together, slept together… whatever they do, it had to be with their sister. One day, Abby wasn’t coming home and Ava decided to go out and look for her. No matter how hard Ava tried, she couldn’t find her, and Abby never came back in the end. Decades have passed. Abby is still not back yet but Ava never forgot about her. One day, Ava revisited the play ground she used to play with Abby. There, she saw a strange woman who was about the same height as her. Ava saw her face, and realised that she was no stranger, but the very precious one she was looking for a long time.

This assembledge incorporates both ideas that were explored in the spacial composition and the landforming. The series of triangles are now more scattered to create a more wide, open sense of space, and the idea of extrusion creating stepping and tilting effect is kept from the last work. The whole space has indivisual uniqueurfaces which allows an oppotunity for wide range of activities that can be doneat indivudual, different secitons.

The map from the SITE activity, the photograph from assembledg exercise and the narrative corrage are combined for the superimposition. From this, I have highlighted interesting intersecitons of different shapes and lines, as well as other shapes and forms that stood out, and made a collage for the final assignment. I have also highlighted the bright section that was created from the combination fo bright colours and darker section that could be used as an extrusion and subtraction for thenext assignment.

“MOKKAI”

SCALE1:400

‘Mokkai’ is a combinaiton of two Japanese words ‘meet’ and ‘timber’: the activity and experience that was assigned for this final project. It also means ‘one more time’ and Japanese, and this suits with the context of the narrative, a reuniting of two sisters who were once torn apart.

The activity ‘meeting’ was serious-ly taken into account for this assignment, and extrusion and subtraction was used thoroughly to create a space where people can have a comfortable ‘meeting’ experience at union lawn. For example, tall structures that is built through the centre of the whole space, is created so that it can be used as a waiting point for people. We have a tendency to stand near a structure or some sort of object rather than standing in the middle of nowhere, because we feel comfortable standing near ‘soemthing.’

I was assigned to use timber for this project. Timber already has the warm, welcoming feel to it, which best suits with the context of this project as it aims to create a comfortable space for people to meet Timber has a potential to create such environment. For the experience collage I’ve decided to explore the texture of the Australian timber material. Australian wood, especially Australian pine and Australian red cedar, creates a warm, calming atmosphere with its texture and colour.
