In Africa urban growth happens faster than anywhere else on the planet and traffic is growing at least at an equal speed.

In most big cities the traffic collapse is already a reality. In the rush-hours vehicle traffic literally stops working at all.

Short trips take hours to complete, the cities are suffering a traffic stranglehold. But unlike in Asia and India, where the growth

rates until 2014 were comparably high, the growth will not yet cease. Urban Africa will go on growing at only slightly reduced

rates even beyond 2030.

This situation severely affects the economy in Africa but even more the vulnerable groups of the society. The ones that get less

out of road traffic are also the ones who suffer most from it. Over 75% of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists and users of

public transport.

From an environmental perspective it is obvious and ethically mandatory that also African cities need to contribute to the global

climate change targets and work towards more energy efficiency in the agglomerations of the region.

For all these issues a rapid and consequent improvement of public transport services is the only solution.

The focus of Eurist´s work lies on the initiation and implementation of efficient and state of the art public transport systems in

Africa. Other activities are related to knowledge transfer and capacity building for students, especially from developing

countries, but also from Germany and other european countries.

Apart from the international activities, Eurist will work in the evaluation of corporate sustainable transport policies in Germany.

On the following pages you will find a broad overview over active and future projects of our organisation.

Ropeway project Accra

After the first two task-force workshops in 2015 it became clear that we the had a lot of potential. We discussed the future of the project with Doppelmayr and agreed we needed to produce an example of how a ropeway system in Accra would be able to perform economically and functionally.

It had been communicated to us several times from government institutions as well as potential private investors, that commitments would not be made without such a business case.

In December 2015 Matthias travelled to Ghana for the third time that year in order to announce the decision and organise the local support of government and independent experts.

In January 2016 the work on the case study started with the definition of a pilot-corridor with the help of the material, the local stakeholders had produced in the first two workshops. When the corridor was defined the potential demand needed to be estimated on the base of existing transport studies on Accra.

Based on these estimations Doppelmayr was now able to design and define a system for that corridor and we are currently finishing the work on this case study. In a next trip to Ghana in the first half of 2016 the study will be presented to the local authorities and potential investors. Objectives for 2016 are to secure funding for a full fledge feasibility study and the full commitment of the local and national authorities.

Kampalas urban transport sector

3 main developments:

1. The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project – initiated in 2005 and where the detailed design has already been done - is at

standstill and has recently been removed from the top of the political Agenda.

2. The Chinese Exim Bank is in process of funding a Lightrail system for Kampala for appr. 700 Million USD and further

national rail projects (total volume 3,6 Billion USD). This project is already in the design phase. Ugandan government

officials recently made a study tour to Addis Ababa Light Rail and Chinese consultants are envisaging to implement within

the next three years.

This new development is counteracting all attempts of the government to implement BRT as a cost-efficient Mass Raid

Transit since 2005, risking another decade for planning and implemented – with a probably disastrous outcome .

Moreover the BRT project was linked to NMT interventions. That is not the case for the Light Rail plans.

3. We learned that KCCA has contracted ROM Ltd., a transport consultancy in Tel Aviv to develop a Multimodal Transport

Plan for Kampala. The deadline for this Study is September 2017. We are not sure if this will be done in a fully

participatory manner.

While our Urban Cable Car Project (for the corridor Bwaise – Makerere University – Taxipark) is now a Presidential issue and

investors are already identified, we strongly believe that EURIST neutral role here can play an important role to get parallel

developments together again to avoid chaos and conflicts of competing activities in the next years. EURIST Kampala Branch

is already invited to the National Joined Sector Review Workshop in September to comment on the current developments.

Ropeway project Morocco

After a trip with a business delegation organised by European - Mediterranean - Arabian Business Association (EMA) in summer

2015, Juergen reported there was a lot of interest in innovative public transport solutions. In order to find out more a small desk-

based study on the ropeway potential in the principal cities of Morocco was produced.

In the end of May 2016, Matthias attended another business trip, in order to propose a joint application for a KFW funding of a

feasibility study in one or more Moroccan cities.

On this trip we first found a concrete response from moroccan authorities. The minister for urban planning and spatial

development invited us to contact him, which we will do with the help of EMA in September 2016.

Ropeway project Dar es Salaam

After the last trip to Tansania in early 2015 we had the

full commitment of the Transport ministry for a ropeway

project in Dar es Salaam. But 2015 was election year

in Tansania, which implied some important political

changes. It is now important to renew this

commitment with the new political leaders in order to

be able to take the next steps.

Our contact Cosmas Takule is trying to engage the

new government and though there are no detailed

plans yet, we agree with him and Doppelmayr that it is

important to follow up the project this year.

One possible way to do so could be a case study,

similar to the one we did for the pilot project in Accra.

Evaluation of Corporate Mobility Management Activities

WBCSD is a CEO-led organisation of forward-thinking companies that galvanises the global business community to create a

sustainable future for business, society and the environment.

Together with its members, the council applies its respected thought leadership and effective advocacy to generate

constructive solutions and take shared action.

In autumn and winter 2015 Eurist and WBCSD agreed on a cooperation in the exemplary evaluation of corporate mobility

management activities of WBCSD member Tchibo.

Due to internal issues of Tchibo in Hamburg, the project has not yet started.

At the moment WBCSD is deciding which company will replace Tchibo to be evaluated as an example for the implementation

of mobility management measures.

WBCSD is considered a high potential partner for the future. Negotiations about other potential projects have been initiated by

EURIST, but have not yet taken place.

Cooperation University of Dohuk, Irak

Out of our long lasting cooperation and partnership with Dr. Hasan Sinemillioglu from the Dortmund University of Technology,

we could finally develop a partnership with the University of Dohuk in northern Irak. In 2015 there where two activities related to

this partnership:

In the first one a delegation of professors and students from Dohuk came to Hamburg in June for a study tour of interesting

transport issues in Hamburg organised and guided by Eurist.

On the basis of this Study tour we also agreed to organise an online seminar in October, where we touched integrated issues

of transport planning and urban development in 14 lectures.

Both events were a success and the partnership will be maintained in 2016. A study tour for Hamburg has already taken place.

A second issue of the seminars was thought to be held locally in Dohuk and not online, but due to the political situation in the

region this has to be postponed or reconsidered.

Cycling in the Zwide Township, Port Elizabeth, SA

Eurist developed the idea of a project with the aim to offer new perspectives

to youngsters by learning cycling skills and showing them, how cycling as a

sport can enrich their lives and enhance self-confidence.

Finally this project was Financed by Volkswagen Work Council, implemented

by the African ONG Ubuntu in cooperation with Terre des homes and Eurist

appeared as the scientific partner in order to evaluate the outcomes.

The project was launched in Zwide, a township in Port Elizabeth in the

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Bay, South Africa.

UBUNTU Education Fund, who is well integrated in the community of Zuide

township, selected the beneficiaries and the “Siyanqoba Cycling Club” took

over the training with the new bikes three times a week.

After Victoria Wesslowski had visited the project in Summer 2015,

Maximilian Heinrich concluded the evaluation in February 2016.

It was common sense between the partners, that the results were

exceptionally good.

All the participants had learned to cycle, most of them are proudly using

their bicycles in their daily lives and some have even joined the sports club in

order to take part in bicycle races.

After this successful pilot project, it is necessary to envision bigger scale

projects with the same players in 2016 and 2017.

Parliamentary Evening: Sustainable Transport in Africa / GASTA

Under the patronage of Andreas Lämmel and Valerie Wilms (members of the Bundestag), and with support from Kurt Bodewig,

former German transport minister and UN-NGO expert, EURIST has organised an international high level Expert meeting in the

german parliament in Berlin.

Participants discussed opportunities and challenges facing development in the transport sector in Africa, particularly how ideas

and concepts from Germany might contribute to sustainability.

Amongst the invitees High level representatives of UN HABITAT, Worldbank) and UATP.

The event was used to present the idea of a “German Alliance for Sustainable Transport in Africa” GASTA, including actors

from german NGOs, industries and administration. After positive consultations with various high level actors, who generally

welcomed the idea, EURIST is now going to lead the initiative in order to find funding for this alliance.

Uttam Nagar (Delhi):

Neighbourhood-based Cable Transport

The Project Aim is to investigate the possibility of providing

aerial cable transport to the neighbourhood of Uttam Nagar

which, given its high-density character and informal genesis,

cannot be effectively serviced by conventional public

transport.

A cable system should guarantee access to Delhi’s trunk

public transport network. The specific research challenge

resides in the modalities of community-based design and

mode of implementation, creating an added social value

beyond transportation.

The Better Bus Project

The Better Bus Project is a hands-on, city-to-city

exchange and technical assistance program to

promote better bus investments in US cities. The

plan is to bring10-20 professionals (not just

planners) working on innovative bus projects to

German cities that have similar improvements.

By introducing mature projects accompanied by

discussions with peers, the goal is to build

inspiration, support, and a U.S. - german

knowledge exchange.

The Project, which has been proposed by our new

colleague Christopher Ziemann will be submitted

within the ERP framework, a german memorial

fund for the Marshall plan, which finances projects

that benefit the USA, and deepen the U.S.-german

relationship.

Technical and economical case studies

After successfully finalising the economical and

technical case study for a ropeway pilot in Accra, the

result has raised interest in other locations.

Besides Studies in already familiar locations like

Lusaka, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi the cooperation

will probably include cities on other continents as well.

Manila was mentioned as one possibility.

Evaluation of Corporate Mobility Management Activities

Aiming to strengthen and expand Hamburg’s role as the leading logistics hub in Northern Europe, the State Ministry of

Economic and Labour Affairs and Hamburg’s business community established the Logistics Initiative Hamburg.

The LIHH (Logistics Initiative Hamburg) wants to explore with EURIST, to what extent more flexible working hours are able to

affect the choice of transport modes and their time of use.

In addition to this the evaluation will attempt to measure the impact of the measures on the commuter traffic at the location of

the company.

LIHH will select and propose an appropriate evaluation area within Hamburg and convince local member companies to

participate in the investigation.

Medina Transportation Centre

Via a contact in the Dresden University of Technology, Eurist was approached in order to form part of the

implementation of a transport centre in the holy city of Madinah (Saudi Arabia).

The centre will be located in one of the Universities of the city and will work in two directions.

On one hand it is thought to be a consulting agency for the municipal transport planning and urban development

and on the other hand it shall be a centre of capacity building and knowledge transfer within the University´s

department of civil engineering.

A project outline has been produced and presented to the cities general commission and is currently waiting for

approval.

Walk 21, Wien

At the end of October 2015 EURIST staff members Barbara and Max participated in the WALK 21 conference in Vienna. The

main topic of the conference was the importance of walking, especially in order to improve the quality of life in inner city

areas. Experts from all over the world presented new facts about the science of walking.

Majors, from Oklahoma (USA), Ljubljana (Slovenia) amongst others showed, how their sustainable inner-city panning has

improved the quality of public space and made their cities more liveable.

With different presentations, several parallel sessions and excursions through Vienna, Barbara and Max could gain a wide

understanding on the latest scientific results and their practical implementation especially in the host city Vienna.

SUMP Conference Bremen

In April 2016 EURIST staff member Maximilian Heinrich participated in the SUMP – Conference in Bremen.

(SUMP = Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan)

Over 400 experts from all over the world discussed about ways to integrate SUMPs in Urban City Planning. In several parallel

sessions experts discussed future challenges of implementation and the status of SUMPs in city planning.

Bremen has made a considerable effort over the last years in implementing sustainable mobility, e.g.. in giving space to the car

sharing economy or in identifying and building new cycling routes.

In addition to presentations and discussions, Bremen was explored in different excursions organised main topics of sustainable

urban mobility. A cycle excursion held by Bonnie Fenton, a researcher and education specialist working with Rupprecht

Consult on giving cycling the status of a serious means of transportation. Bonnie Fenton had also been invited to hold a lecture

on cycling in EURIST´s Urban Transport Weeks’ in September 2015 in Hamburg.
