Prakrit Language has had pride of place amongst ancient languages. Earlier it was the language of

daily communication. The famous Acharyas of Jain Philosophy delivered their sermons in this language. For a

better understanding of this language, the scholars undertake the studies of the books like Prakrit Prakash,

Pravachansar, Samaysar, Gathasaptshati, etc.

Prakrit is not taught in any of the Sanskrit Universities. The teachers of this subject have also been

invited by the foreign countries to deliver lectures on Prakrit literature and Philosophy.

Sankhya Yoga

Sankhya Yoga is an important Vedic knowledge of Indian philosophy. With the special interest shown

in Indology all over the globe, courses in Sankhya Yoga are very relevant in modern era of knowledge. In this

twin subjects, Sankhya and Yoga, the emphasis is on metaphysics. They are complimentary to each other in

the sense that Sankhya analyses the concept of Prakriti (matter) and Purusha, whereas yoga lays greater

emphasis on indepth psychology and believes in the elevation of human soul by following the ancient means

of realizing it. Sankhya, the ancient tradition enunciating the theory of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, is correlated

with the laws of motion and inspires the reader to understand quantum physics. The Department conducts six-

months Yoga Certificate and one-year PG-Yoga Diploma programmes under the self-finance scheme.

Yoga

Under the Faculty of Darshan, the Vidyapeetha started new UG & PG courses in Yoga during the Academic Year 2018-19 and received a good response from the aspirants. Yog is the oldest system in the world for physical and mental development. Yoga has been practiced in India by yogis, sages and mystics for centuries. With yoga, the divine effect of mental peace and physical balance is maintained, due to which the flexibility in the spinal cord and the nervous system continuously increases.

Human yoga can regain its lost health through the system, this system gives rise to mental peace, and reveals secretions in selfhood. In the Vidyapeetha session 2011-12 to 2017, the postgraduate Yoga Diploma and Yoga Certificate courses were conducted under the Yoga Centre. With the approval of University Grants Commission, the Yoga Department has been set up completely in the session 2018-18, in which B.A., M.A. (Yoga), PG Yoga Diploma and Certificate courses are conducted. In all the classes of the department, about 400 students are studying yoga.

Jain Darshan

Considering the rich knowledge with respect to philosophical speculations contained in the Jain texts,

there was a long felt need for a separate department for in-depth study of the tenets of Jain system of thoughts.

It is a unique subject of its kind in India. This subject is being tought with the main objective of making the

Vidyapeetha a representative of Indian tradition.

Jain literature is a vast field and the cultural materials in it are of immense importance. Jain Darshan as

a source of cultural history is as important as Vedic or Buddhist studies. It is all in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Hindi

languages. Jain philosophy has a lot in common with Hindu philosophy and it has its own peculiarities too.

Atomic theory, Karmic theory, theory of Anekantvad, Syadvad, Nayavad, theory of Ahimsa, spirituality,

methods of meditation and non-violence are useful in today's world. The faculty members concentrate on

teaching and research. Since its inception, the department of Jain Darshan has contributed in a major way to

understand the views projected in other systems of thoughts.

Sarva Darshan

Sarva Darshan covers the knowledge in various texts belonging to India's different philosophical

orientations. Exposure to all systems of philosophy helps the students to specialize in more than one field of

Indian philosophy and to carry out interdisciplinary studies. The faculty members have also taken up many

research projects. The teachers of this department are specialized in different Indian philosophical thoughts.

The students completing the course in Sarva Darshan find it useful to get into Indian Administrative Services.

Alumni of the department have also been appointed as teachers in various educational institutions in Haryana,

Rajasthan and other places. In order to give a new dimension to the existing curriculum, the department has

proposed some important areas of western philosophy, especially Greek and Chinese philosophy, to be

included in the regular course work. It is a matter of concern for the department that the Kashmir Shaiva

Darshan is vanishing from the academic arena. Knowledge and research in this branch of philosophy are

necessary for the society. The department proposes to collect, edit and publish the summary of all texts in this

field in a single volume.

Department of Vedanta

The Department of Vedanta offers focused and in-depth study of Advaita Vedanta and Vishistadvaita

Vedanta. Both are popular systems of thought in Indian Philosophy. The Department often functions in

close collaboration with other departments of the Faculty of Darshan. The teachers of the Department, in

addition to their regular research and teaching work, have attended seminars conducted in Mutts and are

invited to participate in shastrartha, symposia and workshops at prominent academic gatherings.

Vishishtadvaita Vedanta is a specialized traditional subject which was taught only in South India. The

Vidyapeetha started this Department in the Ninth Plan in order to bridge this gap. The Department's major

activity is to conduct higher research and organization of debates, seminars and symposia, apart from regular

teaching work. Textual interpretations and comparative analysis of major systems of Vedanta are some of the

contributions of the Department during the year. The Department has prepared a proposal to edit books that

are out of print, with annotations and bring out Hindi translations of those texts. Research interests of the

Department assign priority to some major problems related to other systems of thoughts with reference to

Vishishtadvaita Vedanta.
