About the Show Born seconds apart in the same hospital, teenagers Pig and Runt are inseparable. Their fiercely intense friendship is built upon a complex imaginative world, and a shared appetite for recklessness, adventure and destruction. On the eve of their 17th birthday, fuelled by potent cider and their burgeoning sexual desire, Pig and Runt celebrate as only they know how – by getting wasted and thumping anyone who gets in their way. But as their rebellious weekend reaches its climax, this unique relationship implodes with tragic consequences. Disco Pigs is a thrilling and tumultuous tale of two teenagers raging against small town mediocrity.

Disco Pigs was the explosive first play by writer Enda Walsh, which “didn’t so much debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1997 as erupt there” (Lyn Gardner). It became a cult hit with audiences, and received unprecedented praise from critics. The production catapulted both Walsh and star Cillian Murphy into the limelight. Enda Walsh was named by the Guardian as "one of the most dazzling wordsmiths of contemporary theatre", and has been awarded the Stewart Parker, George Devine and Obie Awards for his theatre work, as well as a Tony Awards for the musical Once.

Following a sell-out extended run at the Young Vic, JMK award winning director Cathal Cleary has been awarded the house recommission Award to revive his critically acclaimed production. The JMK Trust was established in memory of James Menzies-Kitchin, a young theatre director of thrilling promise who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 28. The Award is given to one outstanding applicant each year to create their own production of their choice of classic text. Cathal was the first recipient to be awarded a run at Young Vic Theatre.

!!!! What’s On Stage

!!!! The Stage

!!!! Metro

“Cleary marshals the actors' passions well, and with sound designer Tom Gibbons and lighting designer Anna Watson makes something evocative of Chloe Lamford’s beautifully cluttered set.” The Times “It’s hard to imagine a production that better captures the essence of Walsh’s seductive play. Cleary conducts the action perfectly. Thrilling, turbulent and dangerous, not to mention full of theatrical flair, Disco Pigs becomes a party popper that leaves shrapnel wounds in its wake. Extraordinary.” matttrueman.co.uk "There is no doubt that Cathal Cleary is a very talented and imaginative young director. Repeatedly, he shows flashes of brilliance that herald a bright future." British Theatre Guide

“An excellent launching pad for a career that seems worth watching with interest.” Irish Theatre Magazine

• The first production of the play that shot Enda Walsh and Cillian Murphey to fame since it’s premiere in 1997

• The first tour of this critically acclaimed sell-out production at the Young Vic, first presented as Cathal Cleary’s JMK award piece

• Directed by Cathal Cleary, the first Trainee Artistic Director at the Donmar Warehouse in London

The 2015 house recommission was awarded to director Cathal Cleary for his critically acclaimed and highly successful 2011 production of Enda Walsh’s esteemed play Disco Pigs. The show will tour to 11 venues in the South East as part of house’s mission to improve the range, quality and scale of contemporary theatre presented across South East England.

In 2011, Cathal Cleary won the James Menzies-Kitchin (JMK) Young Director Award and with it the finances to direct Disco Pigs at the Young Vic in London, with design by Chloe Lamford, lighting by Anna Watson and sound by Tom Gibbons. The production was a huge success and a sell-out. In 2015, Cathal was appointed as the first Trainee Artistic Director at the Donmar Warehouse.

In the years since the original production, Cathal has had consistent interest in reviving the piece both in the UK and abroad, and the house recommission award offers an invaluable opportunity to bring the show to new audiences, particularly young audiences.

The JMK Trust exists to support and develop talented young and emerging theatre directors. It does this through the annual James Menzies-Kitchin Young Directors Award (JMK Award), its regional programme and regional assistant directors bursaries. www.jmk.org This will be the first time that Cathal has toured a show in England. He is very excited to bring the show back to life and share the piece with new audiences across the region.
