INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGYWhoever said that studying Biology is purely memorization? You forgot the words “by heart!” Reading the same words over and over again won’t get you far. Hit the books with passion!

Matutunan mo not just genera like Dieffenbachia and Balanoglossus, but also different body parts ng mga anurans and felidae.

Diverse din ang mga tao sa IB. From the admin, staff, guards and syempre the professors, who are interesting characters inside and outside the classroom. Diverse din ang mga Bio students with their various interests, talents and skills.

It’s probably kasi SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST. Charot!

Oh diba? How can you not fall in love with Bio? The country’s premier university brings us the Institute of Biology, the no. 1 department SA PUSO NATING MGA KA-BIO!

Page 20: [FINAL] CS FOP PRIMER VC

INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTRY

The Institute of Chemistry started as the Department of Chemistry in 1910 and was eventually reorganized in 1987 into the institute as we know it today. It is recognized as a leading institution for chemistry in the country, and is designated by the Com-mission on Higher Education as a center of excellence in chemistry. In other words, you are about to undertake four intense years (assuming na hindi ka madedelay) of training and education from the best institution in the country, and are expected to emerge as one of the leading chemists in the Philippines. No pressure.

IC boasts its roster of faculty members. Hardcore diba!! You will be surrounded by people who exude so much passion for the subject.

So my dear freshie, take pride na taga-IC ka! Prepare to enjoy (or endure) the next four years of your academic life, dahil you are definitely in for a roller-coaster ride.

INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICS

Min-san, mas mahirap pang sagutin ‘yon kaysa sa “Find the fourier series of ln(argsinh(x^2.. blah blah blah.” *nosebleed*

So ano nga bang ikinaawesome ng Math?

For sure, kayang-kaya niyong magsurvive and grumaduate with flying colors. Hehe. :)

NATIONAL INSTITUTEOF GEOLOGICALSCIENCES

Welcome sa National Institute of Geological Sciences, NIGS for short! Kung medyo wala kang experience sa love, you’re in luck kasi siguradong ma-lolove at first sight ka sa NIGS. Maliit lang ang building natin pero may museum tayo, sariling library, labs and equipment, airconditioned classrooms, tambayan, Wi-fi (yes, may wi-fi ang NIGS), canteen na dinadayo ng mga students from other buildings at best washrooms in town! Like our canteen, maraming students ang dumadayo para lang maki-CR. Charoott! Home away from home talaga ang feeling. Great facilities, awesome profs and admin, mga batak at magaganda ganyan sa NIGS. Syempre kese nese NIGS ne eng lehet.

Go Push Fight!

A wise person said that there’s always strength in numbers! Another wise person also said, “From this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.” There you have it: MBB life in a nutshell.

That’s the MBB way. Kayang kaya--tiwala lang! Welcome to the NIMBB family, freshies!

OF PHYSICS

Maraming “pinaka” ang makikita mo sa NIP. Nasa NIP ang pinaka you’re Hot and you’re Cold na temperatures sa buong UP, umaabot ng 1500 Kelvin hot-ness (OUCH!) at 10 Kelvin coolness (OOOH).

Or you can like, y’know, make dala your kotse na lang when you want to make punta there.

Teka… Ano to, spoiler ba to? Ienjoy mo na lang! Kanya-kanyang adventure ang pagiging Physics Major. Good luck!

AGHAM Youth, or the Student Advocates of Science and Technology for the People, founded in March 29, 1999, is a patriotic and progressive youth organization of students united under the call to Make Science and Technology Serve the People.

Development of science and technology is not only the interest of the members of the scientific community but it is also the interest of the broad masses of the people who are deprived of it. AGHAM Youth recognizes that only by linking our struggle for the development of science and technology with the struggles of the broad masses of the people can our goals be achieved, making science and technology serve the people

It is a proud member of the Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP (STAND UP), a progressive political alliance that believes that Education is a Right. It is a

Biology. It’s the study of life, but regardless of what you’re learning, a life full of studying can get tiring. The ups and downs of academic life can surely wear a person out, but picture yourself dealing with it alongside a companion, perhaps even an entire group of people. That’s what the UP ABM is - a group of people sharing a common experience and linked, as are the chambers of the nautilus found in our logo, with members both past and present. We promote the academic, social and moral development of our members and more importantly, we want our members to realize that the UP ABM is more than itself. It extends its support even outside of the membership, just as the nautilus occasionally juts its head out of the confines of its “box”.

Forty five members have also been in the top ten of the geology board examination since 1977.

The U.P. Marine Biological Society (UP MBS) is the only organization in U.P. that uses the sport of skin diving to promote awareness of the marine environment. Different students from the University, as well as those from other institutions become part of the UP MBS family to express their passion for the ocean and be advocates of the environment. UP MBS mixes duty with fun as we swim, skim, surf, skin dive, and save the sea.

Do you know how exciting it feels to be twenty feet under water? How fun it is to play with the fishes in a coral garden? Or how rewarding it is to be swimming side by side a turtle? In UP MBS, this isn’t just what we do, this is who we are.

Everyone needs to be aware and stay informed to stay alive. This will help you and I to do so.

BlackoutsIf electricity cut-off is unannounced, report the situation to Meralco immediately. Unplug electrical appliances and lights, as the irregular power supply can damage them. Have a source of light ready for these circumstances. Be careful about using candles that can cause fire when left open and unat-tended. The use of flashlights and rechargeable lamps are highly recommended.

Since it is usually hot during brownouts, wear thin clothes and prepare fans. Furthermore, drink lots of water to avoid dehydration from too much heat.

TyphoonsBefore: Store an adequate supply of food and clean water. Prepare food that need not be cooked. Keep flashlights, candles and battery-powered radios within easy reach. Examine your house and repair its unstable parts. Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report. Should you need to evacuate, bring clothes, a first aid kit, candles or flashlight, battery-powered radio, food, etc.

During: Stay inside the house. Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report. If safe drinking water is not available, boil water for at least 20 minutes. Then place it in a con-tainer with cover. Keep an eye on lighted candles or gas lamps. Do not wade through floodwaters to avoid being electrocuted and contracting diseases. Should you need to evacuate, close the windows and turn off the main power switch. Put important appliances and belongings in a high ground.

After: If your house was destroyed, make sure that it is already safe and stable when you enter. Beware of dangerous animals such as snakes that may have entered your house. Watch out for live wires o outlets immersed in water. Report damaged electrical cables and fallen electrical posts to the authorities (Meralco – 16211). Do not let water accumulate in tires, cans or pots to avoid creating a favorable condition for mosquito breeding.

Know where the fire extinguishers, first aid kits, alarms and communication facilities are located. Learn how to use them beforehand.

During: Stay calm. If you are inside a structurally sound building or home, stay inside. Duck under a table and hold on to it, or protect your head with your arms. Stay away from glass windows, shelves, cabinets, and other heavy objects. If you are outside, move to an open area. Stay away from trees, power lines, posts and concrete structures. If you are in a moving vehicle, stop and get out. Do not attempt to cross bridges, overpasses or flyovers which may have been damaged.

Theft and Robbery Prevention Avoid wearing jewelries, talking over the phone and texting in a crowded area. When wait-

ing for a public utility vehicle, do not stay in a dark area. It is best to call for a company taxi in case of going home at midnight or early in the morning. Lock all doors once inside to prevent “bukas kotse gang” from declaring hold up. Make sure to get the plate number of the taxi and give it to a friend in case something happens. Do not sleep in public utility vehicles.
