the voyage
the research for this collection is largely photographic. it began from photographs of my grandfather, ted (which can be seen over the page). i have always been fond of these particular photographs. they show my grandfather’s rather impractical attire to go climbing and mountaineering. this spurred me to look further into this this spurred me to look further into this activity, especially focusing on the clothing and quiptment which was used at the begining of the 20th century for such expeditions as scott of the antartic.
i found the images of these expeditions incrediably inspiring, the means that were used to protect oneself from the harsh conditions made for really interesting viewing.the two ideas of climbing / mountaineering and polar expeditions mountaineering and polar expeditions came together to form my research. further photographs were found of climbers in their old mountaineering gear, alongside other pictures of explorers. the concept of the voyage was born out the concept of the voyage was born out of this body of research. it takes this spirit of impracticality, of preparing and protecting, and pushes it. the wearer is gearing themself up for a challenge or voyage but it is unknown what this might be.

statement of intent
another influence on my work is utility and workwear. i envisage taking details from menswear workwear garments to make pieces functional and practical, but in a subtle and understated way. what is important to acknowledge is that the majority (if not the entirety) of the images and research are of men and the images and research are of men and menswear garments. i find them much more plentiful in terms of inspiration, and feel that they make a very good starting place to design from. from the research, the collection will focus on layering, impracticality, and functionality and texture.
i envisage a heavy emphasis on traditional fabrics, like felted wool, melton wool, and moleskin. there will also be the use of fur and leather. knitting will also play a key role, though the knit will all be rib, again adding another element to the texture.the collection aims to play on this notion the collection aims to play on this notion of mixing functionality and impracticality with preparing for an expedition. it is important to note that it is also for the sophisticated, understated and elegant woman, and so therefore must reflect this at all times.
and so, the voyage begins...and so, the voyage begins...

these two photographs show my grandfather. i have always been fond of them, as i feel they give a sense of his character, and there is a real atmosphere surrounding them. i love that he is dressed in a shirt and tie - this sense of maintaining one’s appearance at all times is very endearing and testiment to the nature of the times. it is also hugely impractical.

climbing
looking to old climbing photographs as a source of inspiration, focusing on those that show adventure and fun, primitive equiptment and basically the idea that these men are
completely unprepared for the climate, but it does not stop them.

polar expeditions
images from past polar expeditions have been a great source of inspiration. looking at the equiptment and clothing they used to protect themselves, i have found the shapes,
textures and fabrics to be very interesting.

workwear
influences from workwear/utility clothing are key, as this adds to the functionality and practicality of the garments. this relates directly to the attire from the polar expeditions which is all about practicality and preparing against the elements.
